Right-o chap.

So I use Cool Edit pro 2 to record everything I do. (I like the classics, myself.) And I mix everything nice and proper together, but there's a tad bit of a problem.

The mixdown is far too quiet.

BUT, if I adjust each track individually, or the master mix volume, I get clipping. I don't know if things need to be eq'd more, use of envelopes, or what, but my mix isn't up to mixing "standards" as far as volume goes.

I dunno, I can't post any samples because I'm not on that computer, but I wondered if any of you understood what's going on.

theres a prrocess called mastering that comes after the mixing stage, in which you take the mix down and boost its volume as much as possible without clipping or it sounding bad, using a few dynamic effects or eq or whatever...are you mastering it after you've mixed down?

I've done mastering, yes. But the mix can barely be upped without clipping. I believe there's one or two spots where it clips now, but it's nothing you can hear.

I've eq'ed it a bit, but that left it kind of blah sounding, and didn't help much.

I also tried widening the mix to a "Mastering width" but it ****ed up the mix by kind of panning everything to the center channel.

Have you used compression or an ad-limiter or something on it??

I haven't messed with it in a few days, but I don't think I've tried compressing it yet, wasn't sure if that'd "flatten" or "dull" the mix.
