View Full Version : Shows which improve during their run

The general consensus for most programmes is that they often start to go downhill after x number of seasons (look at Lost- only in season 2, and while it's still good, it's nowhere near as good as season 1), but occasionally there's the odd show which just keeps getting better as it goes on.
Shows like South Park can be kinda hit and miss, but IMO some of the newer episodes (from the last few seasons) have been much funnier than some of the earlier stuff.
My favourite example of a show which just keeps getting better and better would be Scrubs. I loved the first few seasons of Scrubs, but they managed to improve on them and make it even better recently (IMO they've made it much funnier while still being able to make truely emotional moments which bring a tear to your eye- no other show can do this)
24 is a strange one. In my opinion, season 5 is probably the best yet, but it's not really a case of improving, as having a stronger story and better characters than previous seasons.
Stargate is another strange one. IMO it's always been great, but season 8 was probably my least favourite and the show was starting to show it's age. But the shows creators saw this, so they managed to give it a fresh lease of life in season 9 (starting new stories, adding new characters) while still keeping it the same show. And now I would rank season 9 as one of my favourites, and the next few seasons have the potential to be just as good (if not better).
So- discuss shows which have improved during their run rather than getting worse or staying the same.
family guy was terrible to begin with and the new seasons are even worse

the simpsons is a strange one as well. improved loads for the first few series, then went downhill by their standards. i heard the turning point, the end of the golden era was the skinner/tanzarian one. i saw the gervais one this evening, poor, i never liked the office.

True true.
Trailer Park Boys was sort of a bit drab in the first season, but following seasons have had hit after hit after hit.
Top Gear peaked about two seasons ago, and has kept that standard ever since.
Simpsons was like a hill of comedy for me. In my opinion it started (the first couple seasons that is) kind of slow, it wasn't my humor mainly because i was born in '87 and now when I look back on it I don't find it to be all that funny, but as the seasons progressed they really climbed and IMO found their peak a few seasons back. The last few years their show has kind of digressed from where they were a while ago. I think a lot of you agree the simpsons has done a little poorer job in keeping up with the hilarity issues as of recent.

Really? I'd thought that the first few seasons were the better ones. I still think it's awesome in the later seasons, but I've always liked the earlier seasons more.
Not 7th Heaven
I can't believe that fuсking show is still running.

7th Heaven is still being made?
Babylon 5, easily. It was the best show ever to begin with, and got better (but had a slight decline in ***-kickedness by the last season, but that was just the way the plot had to go)

Hardly. Family Guy is one of the few TV shows I actually enjoy watching. I usually can't stand to sit in front of the TV for any length of time, unless I'm watching this show.

Monk does that for me. The first season is brilliant, then the 2nd season till 3rd, they raised the bar despite having to replace a central character and by Season 4, they have reached a plateau of awesomeness.

I think South Park has improved alot, mainly because Parker and Stone now look at global issues, politics, and simply take the piss out of retards such as Tom Cruise, Paris Hilton, etc...
Never have like Family Guy, simply don't like the animation/style.
South Park is very hit and miss with episodes, because the character development is so random and the jokes are overused. Sometimes episodes can be hilarious purely because of the plot, while others just remind me of those same Jew jokes and celebrities I don't want to hear about.
Nip/Tuck has progressed a lot over the 3 season I think

Rescue Me
The Shield.. although it hasn't entirely been uphill. The last season was great as a tv show, but I kinda miss the earlier seasons when it wasn't so dark and Vic was knocking over dutchboys coffee onto his desk. Now IAD is so close and Lem is gone so it's more serious.

Does anyone remember when Family Guy was popular?
Now it's popular to not like it! What a turnaround!

American Dad started off pretty ok but has gotten much much better.
This season of Family Guy started off pretty weak but it has come back pretty strong.
The Simpsons has improved greatly since 4 seasons ago. Some of this seasons episodes have been amazing.
The West Wing until Sorkin left.
The West Wing from after Sorkin left till the series ended.

It's only popular to hate now because of the whole South Park thing.

Blackadder improved massively after the first series. The other three are all at about the same level, though my personal favourite is Blackadder 2nd.

I think Lost is just as good now as it was last season. The finale is going to be RIDICULOUS. For awhile, Alias was great and then morbidly declined.
Fairly Odd Parents
yes yes yes

I don't know, I almost never watch TV. I watch Lost on Wednesdays, and maybe an occasional movie here or there. Most of my wasted time is spent doing stuff on the computer/internet.

And swap KotH with Futurama for me. I've never seen much Futurama, but what I've seen I liked.
