View Full Version : My little experience today

So today I made £5.60's worth of a trek to Guildford today, with the guitarist from my band.

We went to Andertons... or Mecca, if you're me. I had to take my $$ to be set up anyway, so after that was done, we went and messed about with some gear.

Mark was trying as many guitars as he could, but this ain't no guitar forum, so we'll have none of that.

Warwick Thumb NT

:amaze: My god! I never knew there existed a bass that felt, played and sounded as beautiful as this instrument.
I plugged it into a Warwick Profet5.1 (more about that later) and was immediately blown away by it. It growled at every oppurtunity. I dropped it to D and started banging out some Mudvayne, and it sounded absolutely perfect, very L.D.50.
I also tried out some of our own songs and it held well, especially when doing some tapping
If I had £1900, I would own this bass right now!

Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass

Again, my god. I haven't played a passive bass in about two years now... not since I aquired my Cort. I always saw them as being weaker.

I was wrong. I started on Infectious Grooves, and the sound was brilliant. The bridge pickup gave it bite and the P depth. The dropped it to D and played a bit of Agony Scene, and again it was perfect, very sharp and bassy

Warwick Corvette Standard

It was available, so I thought I'd give it a try... not much to report.

Rockbass Streamer 5

Yeah, I wanted to try a 5er, I never really liked them, prefering 6ers. This was great though, the B was really tight and the sound focused.
I had some odd looking people stare through the door when I started the intro to My Name Is Mud :D

Warwick ProFet 5.1

I WILL OWN THIS HEAD

Anyway, ITT I have talked a bit of bollocks....

Sounds awesome. I'm going to help my guitar-playing friend buy a bass tomorrow afternoon, so I'll take that opportunity to play everything I can get my hands on.

I played a 65 Fender Jazz Bass (a real one not a RI) at the GC in Atlanta I probably would have bought it if I had the 4k and if it was pre CBS. It had a great tone one of the best I have ever heard come from a Jazz bass. :thumb:

I havent been to Andertons for a few weeks now. Do they still have that Thumb NT 5 Fretless, because that was a beast.

Also, instead of paying 5.60, get the train to London Road and walk instead - no ticket barriers or guards :thumb: (also, its allot closer)

Or just buy a child ticket. But your free way sounds better.

Went into allens music in the city last week (Sydey) to check out the new EB3 and EB0 they had, so beautiful and i loved the short scale even more (big surprise for me with my big hands and such i usually don't like them) so thats my next bass. But they also had an epiphone viola bass. That was the funkiest little demon i have ever played. i was expecting to hate it but i played it the longest, and thats when maybe it will become my next bass. Such a sweet range of tones and perfect for almost every style.

*Hamer.

When I was in New York I went to Rudy's Guitars (Go there it's amazing) and played an NSD Electric Upright. I was blown away. I want one so bad. I also played a couple Laklands and my first Ritter. Quite an experience.

Plus if you ever come to Las Vegas, go to Ed Roman's. He literally has like 1,000 guitars and at least 200 basses. Amazing store, but the customer service sucks.

I caught the bus, much more direct from Midhurst.

Nope, they never have fretlesses when I'm there. The last one I played in the store was a Godin A4 about a year ago, sweet bass

Not to sound negative about you being positive, but... Is their gear you dislike? Your reviews were practically shining they were so positive

I know, maybe you could see them as biased, but edge, the stuff I was playing was brilliant

Although the Corvette was a bit... bleh. Oh yeah, and I tried a ****ty little Daisy Rock acoustic and a Yamaha Rbx 5 string that was a bit loose and pooy

Killer Fridge

Yeah, that RBX is pretty screwed. Majorly out of tune and the action is set far too low to be useable. Fretbuzz ftw!

So true. I went in there asking for flats and the old dude with the long hair and glasses, kind of geeky crazy accent. Had no idea what i was talking about and then got all upset. they're only for jazz we don't sell them. He's creepy man.

When you want help they ignore you and treat you like **** when you ask for it, also way too expensive. the guys at venu are pretty cool and the guys at most of the shops on parramatta road (particularly the bassplayer but i've never been into billyhydes and apparently they rock) are all awesome.
I live behind one of the music stores in king st newtown, its mostly guitars but the dudes in there rock

I have to go into the local store to get my bass setup professionally (as many on the forums recommend that its very much worth it) however I am somewhat paranoid, I doubt they'll go over my whole bass, leave some stuff messed up, and then overprice their service. It's like every time they see me walk in the store, they know that I'm bad with pricing. :(

Just stand over them and watch what theyre doing, then youll know how to do it properly next time and you can point out anything you feel theyve missed of ignored.
