I've seen bonham do it, but you might as well do it with sticks.

yeah i dont try it. just so you know the only way youll get the bonham sound is hitting so hard that your hands actually bleed, like he did.

Why not just play with some sticks?

It would help to be in the 70's and wasted all the time. That's how he did it.
If you hurt something (on your drums) you'll have to pay for it. Bonham didn't. If you hurt something (on you) that's just stupidity.

Well, if you're looking to learn from John Bonham you're doing it all wrong. They didn't have the internet back then, but even if they did I guarantee you Bonzo wouldn't be on here asking questions like that. Everything he did to those drums with his bare hands, he figured out himself. You want to follow the path he did, you should be hitting your drums with your bare hands right now instead of farting around on the internet.

Although I agree with the stupidity of trying a mere "visual effect", I strongly disagree with your attitude. He never said he was trying to learn, he was just asking anyone if they have done it before. But if your trying to motivate him in a really weird way..go for it. Jack a.s.s.

of course i want to follow my own path but theres nothing wrong with learning a thing or two from the greats and its noy just for visual effect it sounds so differnt than just sticks or brushes i thinks its a great technique to learn and all i wanted to know was if there was a way to get cool effects off the drum from hitting it with my bare hand other than the way it already sounds with my barehand

I heard holding these pieces of wood called 'drum sticks' could work well. :thumb:
Nah but really, good on you for learning it, I would if I had a real kit.

I have done this as well, it'e good fun and you can impress some people, but it doesn't really have any good use.
If you wanna practise it just practise rudiments like with sticks but without sticks(eeh).
Tuning your drums like Bonzo, aka a bit higher then other rockers (big band tuning) will help as well.

You leave the stick on the head...
It's a real nice way to dent them.

Surely the jazz guy he saw doing it wouldn't have had bleeding hands?

Bonham was a bricklayer, Thats how he could play drums with his hands so well and for so long...
The calices (spelling?) on his hands must have been huge...
Unless you practice hitting your hands on drums/cymbals often, it'l keep hurting until you develop calices (spelling?) where it hurts.
Im sure its a great way of playing for certain types of music But i can honestly say that i probably wont ever play drums with my hands, for a band, on purpose...

if you really want that hand-drummed sound, get yourself some really soft mallets and go for it.

Most of the time playing a drum set with your hands is silly.
This isn't to say it can't be cool.
I've done it before (not saying that made it cool) I was at a jazz gig, and played a chorus or two of St. Thomas, while the bassist was soloing. Really it was mostly using my fingers on the snare like on a tabla or something, to play some calypso-esqe stuff, that sounded different than the brushes i was using on the rest of the song. Just a way to change gears and support the bassist while he solo-ed.
i wouldn't go beating the crap out of my hands on a rock tune though.

Yeah. You could just tape rags to your sticks and achieve a similar sound with out bloody hands. You can't masturbate with scabby palms.

Thats a lie and you know it. You must be a lame drummer if you aren't even creative enough to wack it without just stroking.

My drum teacher's teacher, who was Alan Dawson (http://drummerworld.com/drummers/Alan_Dawson.html), did something like that, but he used his fingertips instead of his palms. Maybe that's the jazz guy Bonham saw!
I'd have a sorta connection with John Bonham!

Maybe for you...

For the same reason the rest of us are.
Oh and He's not asking a question.
He is one of the main helpers on here.
The rest serve as peasants.
Moogaipan is on the MX hierachy.
If he was asking a question, It'd probably be more a complex question than playing drumset with your hands.

One of my friends is a huge Bonham fan... he plays with his hands at every show he does at some point. I personally think its kind of dumb, but the crowd loves it, and it makes him feel like a bad mofo so whatever.
