I want to upgrade my snare and have my eye on this particular snare. I'm pretty sure my local Guitar Center stocks these so I will be able to try it out before I buy it. I would like and honest reveiw of this snare, though. The ones on the Musicians Friend website are pretty ridiculous (one guy said in a review of a PDP snare that it sounded better with die-cast hoops rather than wood hoops:confused: ).
If anyone owns this snare or can suggest others in my price range (up to $275) I would greatly appreciate comments on how they sound and how versatile they are. I want a great sounding snare for my money but I would really like one that can be used in numerous situiations (everything from jazz/blues to rock/metal). Thanks in advance:thumb:

Too small for general all around snare.
For what you are wanting, I'd look for a birch 5x14. Plenty of tuning options.

^ get outta here man. 13x6.5 and 5x14 are almost identical in size. Tuning "options" are not dependant on the size of the snare, but the skill of the tuner.
There's only 2 models of the mush, their the same price and pretty much identical save the diameter and additional dumb wood thingy on the smaller.
Both are excellent, just a matter what the pitch you want for the size. The 13" could work well as a main snare if you don't need that huge fat snare sound and want that more crack, cutting sensitive snare.
I use a 13x5.5 maple all the time as a main, it's one of my favorite snares.
The mush's are firecrackers. Lotta crack, can be very sensitive like other hard wood snares. not as much body per say as a maple drum, and again not as warm. But having bit more throaty punch and projection instead. it's a louder anre because of that. Through tuning and playing technique it coudl be used in pretty much any situation without a issue.

I love em, tuned with Coated Amb (Medium tension) and Snareside Amb (medium to high) they provide a full bodied crack, and don't even get me started on how the ghost notes sounded on this baby!

I don't have any particular experiance with that snare. However, another option to consider is the Chad Smith Signature snare. My friend just picked one up and it sounds great.

Thanks to everyone who posted thus far:thumb: Josiah pretty much nailed it for the kind of description I was looking for. I'll probably end up going with the 13" but I will test it out before I buy.

I would like to try a black panther, but GC doesn't have one I can test out and I know there are numerous models of BP out there.

Travel for a black panthet, it is worth it.
If not the yamaha mushashi oak is quite nice, very poppy.

I would travel, but I drive a Frontier and gas is damn near $3.00 a gallon. I'm also still on probation at my new job and can't call in or take a day off or I get fired:upset:
