I was recently introduced to the concept of playing triplets...(don't ask how I didn't previously know about them...)

And, I reckon they sound awesome.... but I'm a bit unsure of how to apply them musically. Can someone point me in the direction of a few songs that involve their use in fills and whatnot.

I just can't seem to recognise them in music...and I think, once I become familiar with hearing them amongst a groove, and a whole song, I will be able to recognise them more naturally, and be able to notice them within a fill...

If anyone knows of any other internet lessons that involve the use of triplets, I'd appreciate that as well.....also, preferably, the songs you recommend, won't be too hard...I've only been playing 1.5 years.

Thanks.

They are everwhere. They sound really laid back if put into duple-time context.
They become easier to recognize with time.

I think the awesome double bass bit in "One" by Metallica is 2 triplets in a row, im not sure though.

No, that's what theyre called. A sextant is a group of six musicians. etc,etc. at least I think it is.

A Moment of Silence-Streetlight Manifesto ( Right after the horn intro, and than the drummer frequently uses the same fill throughout the song ).

FCPREMIX-Fall Of Troy ( Once again.. )

i can't think of any particular songs right now but triplets are used a lot in fills and in any song where there is constand double bass work it's normally in triplets. Also, quarter note triplets are used a lot to bring an end to musical statements, or they they can start them off.

John Bonham and Ginger Baker use them a fair amount in fills.

Triplets are cool sounding..they give the song a whole different feel. I think if you want to know how to apply triplets, trying playing in 6/8 because it has a triplet feel to it, along with the rest of your fills, maybe that might give you a better idea.

The one's in ONE - metallica are two groups of 16Th note triplets, or 1 group of 8th note sixtuplets, which ever one floats your boat.
Call of the ktulu by metallica has about 4-5 really cool triple fills, that fit well with the song. But if you've only just learnt triplets, i doubt you'll keep up with the rest of the song.

But, they are everywhere. Two songs that i like which are pretty much based on triplets, are "for whom the bell tolls" by metallica, and "iron maiden" by Iron maiden

Bonham#1!

Bonham is a great example for triplets.
Check out the songs by Led Zeppelin..
When the Levee Breaks
Rock and Roll (last bit of the song... sounds amazing)

Blue Rondo is filled with them.

And BTW, count them with the 'na ne' syllables.
It's better for you than the other methods.

that's becuase whenn you play them that way you have a one handed lead. You start the triplet with the same hand everytime. You shoud get better at both hand leads so you can play like rlr lrl rlr lrl

^ no im a righty that plays open handed so i can lead with either hand and if i do it rlr lrl rlr lrl my hands often get tangled going from hightom to floortom

well....
you can play rlk

where:
r=right hand
l=left hand
k=kick drum

so you do some tom on the right and another on the left

^^^ power triplets... very sweet.

a good song to try to distinguish triplets from straight is "for whom the bell tolls" by metallica. They go back and forth between straight and swing feels.

and to FullMoon ---> getting your hands jumbled is no excuse. I am a left handed drummer on a right handed set. you have to work through the problems to develop the good technique.

Stairway To Heaven fill after guitar solo being the best example i can think of.

And pretty much all of Toad and Moby Dick are based on triplets.

Edit: In my original post I did say "in fills", but after listening to Toad/Moby Dick (should be required listening for drummers anyway), you can spot easily where Baker and Bonham apply the material in their solos to their songs.

Aneurysm by Nirvana.

The intro fill is awesome.

Dave Grohl only has to toms to work with so it's easier to figure out. His right hand is on the Floor tom and his right is on the rack tom. When it goes to the snare he leads with his right. It's...

He should practice it all of those ways plus the way he does it and use whatever way he wants to on the kit........
