View Full Version : New Gear Spending Spree
Half Way To 0

Alright so the guitarist in my band decided to use his college fund to buy new gear for the 3 of in the band since he isn't going to college. We each get a little over $3700. Now I just need some suggestions of what to get. I already a few things in mind.
All of these prices are rounded off:
MIM Fender Jazz $450
G&L Tribute L-2000 $560
American Deluxe Fender P-Bass $1180
QSC RMX1450 power amp $430
maybe a Korg DTR1000 rack mount tuner and maybe a Peavey T-40 bass.
And for cabs I was looking at 2 Aguilar S410 cabs at $380 each. They were recently discontinued though so getting them might not be too easy.
Right now I have a 4 string Rockbass Corvette, a Peavey TVX 4x12 cab, an old Acoustic power amp, and a programmable Sansamp BDDI.
I plan on just continuing to use the Sansamp as my preamp since I like its sound. The biggest thing I think I need help with is the cabs. I don't want one big 8x10 so that's why I was looking at 2 smaller cabs. I mainly play a mixture of punk and ska, a bit of emo sometimes too. Think Matt Freeman style sort of.

Well do you like the rockbass? cause if you do just get a Warwick Corvette then and for amp I'd say a 4x10 and a 1x15 and some kind of head and such

Your guitarist is awesome.
For that much cash (and considering your musical style), I'd get an SVT full-stack and an MIA J or P, or a Ric.
Before I do the who, "congrats" and "you lucky sod" deal I just want to ask a few questions as I think a bigger problem is being overlooked.
Why is you guitarist no longer going to college?
Is is because you guys are trying to get signed and he feels the money would be better spent in pursuing this goal rather than getting a degree and trying to make a career for himself?
My main problem with this whole thing is that while he and the rest of the band including you score big time as far as gear goes your guitarist ultimately loses.
Nothing can replace education and the greater earning potential one gets from it.
I am really grateful for the oportunity I got to go to university and can really see how it is paying off at this stage while I job search (am currently working under contract and doing pretty well) and seeing the good paying jobs available to me as a result of further studies
What Iam trying to say, is why is he not investing the money in his education now, and sacrificing the ability to purchase new gear, when later on he will be earning the money to buy what he wants and then some?
My 2 cents
And as promised......
You lucky sod, enjoy blowing the money are good gear.

I'm also wonderign why he's not going to college.
I wouldn't accept the money, personally...
Anyway...
Why do you need to buy 3-4 basses? Buying a G&L L-2000 and a Precision seems like a waste, seeing as an L-2000 can get as beefy as a P. And even then, the L-2000 seems like a waste when you can get the T-40, which also takes away the need for a jazz (yeah, it's that versatile, haha).

Well he's not going to go to college because he pretty much hasn't gone to school since 8th grade. He's gone to the alternative high school program on and off for a couple years and now he's going through some program where he'll gradute in the next 8 months. It's pretty much a get the kid out of the system thing. College just isn't a consideration for him.

I see your point on the basses. That's why I'm going to go to a few music stores and try things out to see what I like. My only concern about the T-40 is that I'm pretty much limited to ebay for getting one and I like to play before I buy. I was also thinking of a Corvette.

I agree with ebe9. While it is a very nice gesture of your guitarist you must consider that this is a lot of money for anyone, especially when it looks like your guitarist won't be a big earner in the future. He will need that money down the road.
Also, consider that that money will bind you to him, should you accept it.

personally... i wouldnt take the money in the first place.. because 1) if hes not going to college.. hes gonna need every penny he can get his hands on 2) you will owe him, not only financially but also favors and such... even though its a great opportunity, 4k is alot of money ( its like a couple months rent depending on where you live)... but since you are going to accept the money.. i would get
Ampeg SVT pro 4
Ampeg SVT 8X10

I agree. That's too much money for a friend to give.
But if you are going to use the money I wouldn't buy lots of basses, I would just buy one freakin awesome custom and a sweet rig.

don't accept all the money. if he insists, only take ~$500, IMO. that's enough to pay for a decent amount of gear.

Here's my suggestion:
Get a custom made Warmoth bass, you can pretty much get them to look and sound however you want..I mean, 3700 bucks leaves you with room to spare.
Then, with the 1500-2500 you should have left, by some nice fresh cables, maybe even some good wireless ones, and then get a nice amp. With that kinda money you can get a top dollar Eden or Trace that will never need to be replaced.
..that's what I'd do anyway.

Just get a T-40 and maybe a better amp rig but definetly let the guy keep most of his money. I have a feeling he might regret letting you guys spend it.

if i were you id get a warmoth custom, a big trace elliot stack, a wah pedal, and id buy parts to make a fretless.
Dont spend all of it because you have it though. buy what you want or need, and give the remaining dough back if i were you. to be honest i wouldt be able to resist spending that money.. all i want is a sweet custom and a trace elliot stack!!!

Don't listen to this people telling you not to take all the money.
Seize the day!
edit: I'm not a greedy bastard, but i mean c'mon guys...if this guy didn't mention that it was his former college fund, and just gave you 3,700, you know you'd take it.

i couldnt accept that amount of money. maybe if it was like 500-1000 yeah i could, but thats too much. plus your going to be obligated to stay with him as long as he bought you all this gear. but it doesnt seem like your thinking to much into that, so id say...
G&L ASAT
Ampeg Head
2 Aquilar cabs, and then be done with it, dont get too much stuff.

I see only three options here
1) You have no clue when it comes to dealing with any amount of money
2) You are the posterchild for moral bankruptcy
3) You are a clueless teenager

College is not for everyone. Its better he keep the money than it is for him to spend it on a college and then drop out. I wouldn't take alot of money either, maybe about $500. You don't have to get a college degree to make it in life. It just makes it a little easier sometimes.

If you think college would be right for you, by all means go, but it shouldn't be your only choice. It is a very important decision for anyone to make. Make sure you have made the right choice when you decide if you're going to go or not.

If it was me and someone offered me $4000 i'd take it, no guilt at all, because in Australia, 4 grand gets you a new warwick or 'ray, that's about it.
