What's all the gear I'd need to start recording for a whole band?

The difference between a $100 and $1000 setup is incredible. Your budget would be..?

For cheap, a simple mixer with enough inputs for an entire band, and a soundcard meant for recording purposes would do you fine.

For more money, control and better sound quality [preamps in the mixer, converters in the soundcard], you can get a better mixer/soundcard combo, or a preamp that handles atleast 8 or more inputs.

There are endless solutions, but if you're starting out, look into Behringer gear. They're cheap and do the job for what you pay for it.
