View Full Version : The likeliness of getting caught using a file sharing program?

Well, I just got an ipod and I was thinking of just using SoulSeek for songs. But the thought came into my head about what are the chances of being caught. Does anyone what the chances are? High? Low? I guess I could always use itunes, but $1 a song kind of adds up. I was either thinking Soulseek or Limewire. I've really heard too much bad things about Limewire, though. Can anyone help me or know this?

Soulseek you won't get caught. You only get caught if you upload like thousands of songs on like Limewire or Kazaa.

Go with Soulseek. Just avoid major titles if you're worried. Considering you have a Morbid Angel album cover as your avatar I doubt you'll be downloading anything that's black listed.

Yeah I was thinking of using SoulSeek. I was just looking to be positive that I won't be caught.

Yeah, most albums I'll be downloading are like: Death and thrash metal, maybe some classical.

Anyone know the fine of getting caught?

There's never a 100% certainty that you won't be caught, but I haven't heard anything about the RIAA stamping down on Soulseek yet. They are focusing on torrents at the moment I think (Which is bad news for me :()

Man, that's scary buisness.

I heard they're slapping people with $500,000 fines or like 5 years in jail.

Chances of getting caught on Soulseek are slim to none, even if you're uploading hundreds of albums.

If you use soulseek and only trade with people you know (ie, people from the Mx soulseek rooms) then you aren't risking anything.

If you download artists that aren't represented by the RIAA then you aren't risking anything.

If you use super secret/swedish torrent sites, you're not risking anything.

Anything else and you're risking something. The RIAA just sends out lawsuits to any IP they find transfering files. It used to be they just went after the big uploaders, but now they just go after everybody who turns up in their searches.

Best advice is to turn off file sharing and not to leave files in your shared folder.

I had 2 friends get caught using Bittorrent. One for downloading one episode of a TV show, the other for Photoshop. The Photoshop didn't even work  Anyways, nothing happened to either of them, they just got letters intended to scare the **** out of you.

Well classical music you can download legally anyway because it has no copyright, well classical music up to the end of the 19th century atleast, nobody is aloud to claim it and copy right it as their own so you are safe on that one.

That's not entirely true. An orchestra may not own a symphony, but if they record it they have a right to sell it and claim royalties from their recording. So downloading classical is generally illegal aswell.

To date, the RIAA has sued approximately 16,000 people in the United States suspected of distributing copyrighted works. They have settled approximately 2,500 of the cases. According to Digital Music News, the average number of users online simultaneously has more than doubled since the lawsuits began, from 3.8 million in August of 2003 to 8.9 million in June of 2005.
Wikpedia.

Personally, I think the RIAA is fighting a losing battle. If people like a group, they'll support them and buy a CD.

And Kithkin, do you know who's RIAA protected and who's not?

Yeh also true, im not sure it's a grey area, i supose it depends on what you download but i know some of it is at least legall but i couldn't tell you what specifically so thats no good. Meh i would just go and buy the music anyway.

I use torrents/soulseek. I remove the file once its done and put it in a different folder so I should be ok.

That's a good site for checking albums released under the RIAA.

/doesn't know what it is

meh, I just use a different forum where people upload full albums and movies/applications to get my music, all in YSI/MU/RS links...

I don't know if its just as bad or not, but probably easier to get caught.

Yeah, you lucky bastárds! How come Canada is allowed to download and the US & UK aren't? Whats the reason?

I don't even know why.

It's probably only a matter of time until they do make it illegal, just so the governement can say they are doing something.

++ for filesharing. Gotta love it.

Use Soulseek. It's the only tr00 peer-to-peer program. Limewire has lots of spyware that comes along with it. Torrents are good too. You only get caught if you upload a lot of crap. Like, A LOT.

If you don't share on Soulseek, people won't share with you.

Sharing makes the world go round, these programs don't work if you don't share.

Probably the same reason they don't get thrown in the slammer for smoking a joint.
