Typically, a desktop should have 4 RAM slots. So you could have 4X1024MB of RAM. I don't think it will fry the motherboard though. That is usually the CPU that does the frying.

mine has 2 slots.
the max my pc can handle is 256mb alltogether apparently.
How can I tell what hard drive to get for my PC?
like as a second internal hard drive?
thanks.

After you run the scan it will reccomend you some memory to buy, but your max is on the left.
Your computer currently has 1024MB of memory installed; and will support up to 2048MB.

 256Mb? That's pretty damn low, you must have an older PC.
As for the hard drives, just get any ATA drive, as you probably don't have any SATA ports. ATA drives use the flat grey ribbon cables instead of SATA cables.

Haha, my motherboard supports upto eight gigs of RAM. Pretty pointless seeing as it's still only DDR.

If you're going to buy RAM for that thing, I'd suggest just getting a new computer. Yours is pretty old by the sound of it.
What exactly do you want to upgrade for?

No, just because there are four slots doesn't mean you can have four gig sticks. RTFM

Truth. My old one had 2 slots and it maxed out at 512. :-\
Some mobos with four slots support up to 8 GB too.
Mine supports up to 8 gigs ... why someone would ever need 8 gigs of RAM is beyond me.

Eh mine can hold 512 MB's and I work with 64, so I guess I win at mediocrity.

You can get commercial servers with up to 576GB of ram, so I supposed if you wanted to go that way...
