Summer's coming up (4 days of school left) and over the break I'm going to have a lot of free time to mess around with things. I stumbled across this forum and the homemade FX pedals really piqued my curiousity. I'd like to get into doing custom pedals and things like that. My guitar could probably also use something a bit better than stock pickups. So I've got a couple of questions:

What equipment do I need to get into doing custom pedals/guitar mods?

What kind of things do I need to know and where is a good place to get this information? I can probably find books if someone throws out a title or author.

20-50 watt soldering iron with a pointed tip.

De-soldering pump/braid.

Solder.


And the best book you can buy, imo, is Guitar Electronics For Musicians by Donald Brosnac.

there's such a thing as a de-solderer? damn, that could have helped me so much before. i just heated things up with a soldering iron and pulled out the pieces with pliers.

actually its just a pump

you melt the already soldered piece, and use the pump to suck away the liquified solder

in the trade this is generally refered to as a "solder sucker"

anyways.. back on topic... for electronic work all that was stated above will get you started off pretty good. if you can't read schematics, you needa learn to do that before anything.
