I really love my Cort C4 Artisan, as it's my first bass, and has served me well, but to be honest, the thing sounds pretty un-insipiring. I was thinking about getting new p-ups (atm it's got 2 stock standard Mighty Mite active humbuckers, neck and bridge), so maybe some EMGs or SDs?

Either that or I might look into a new amp. I really love Justin Chancellor's tone on lateralus and 10,000 days, so maybe a Mesa? I listen mainly to punk, rock, metal and stuff like Tool, Primus and Chilli Peppers, and I prefer finger-style, but I can use a pick okay.

I'm really looking for something raw-ish, like a blend of Tool and stuff like Pulley and Strung Out. Anybody know something that might be able to help me get my tone like this, preferably without getting a new amp?

I'm gonna need a new bass aren't I?

do you have some kind of budget to work on?

A new bass would probably be a good idea but you can tart your bass up with new pickups and maybe a new preamp.

A new amp is a better idea though, bad bass + good amp = okay.
What amp are you using atm?

budget isn't a problem, and I'm using a little Laney 30watt practice/jam amp, which I think is probably my main problem. But like I said, I'd really like to tart my bass up a bit as well, maybe with some new pups or a new pre-amp, which would be REALLY cool, but also because freight to where I live is cheaper for p-ups and such :p
