I was searching for some lo-fi a little while back and I found two band I really like, Guided by Voices and Eric's Trip. The trouble however is that other bands that are refered to as "lo-fi" sound like they've recording in a professional studio. What appeals to me about the genre is the loose recording quality. If someone could reccomend me bands that sound like early GBV or Eric's Trip that'd be cool.

Try The Grifters, I like them alot. Also Sebadoh, of course.

This Japaneese punk band Guitar Wolf isn't lo-fi persay, but they record all their songs on a walkman.

The thing is that I have a few Grifters and Sebadoh records, they just don't sound lo-fi! I mean I like them and all, but the recording quality is too good to be considered "lo-fi" persay.

I wanna know if therer any telephonequality- completely reverberated vocals madness a la early Guided by Voices and Eric's Trip.

What albums do you have? Sebadoh III and before is pretty lo-fi, and One Sock Missing by the Grifters is pretty messy.

Daniel Johnston is a good call though, you should check him out too.

Cool sorta-new Lo-Fi band I just found out about: The Hospitals. Their Fi is so Lo that alot of their stuff verges on noise.

If you want lo-fi recordings, then check out Russian Futurists. I like him.

Yo La Tengo - some of their stuff is gold, and very lo-fi.

The early Flaming Lips records are lo-fi, same with Ween's The Pod and GodWeenSatan. Pavement's Slanted & Enchanted owns.

i'd say their production is extremely lo-fi, but as far as the sound of their music, they're more of a prog/psychedelic band.
that doesn't change the fact that black Folliage is one of the most awesome records EVER, of course.

but yeah, Pavement, early Flaming Lips(except Hit to Death in the Future Head, that one's more like psychedelic noise-punk), early Of Montreal (their album "Cherry Peel" is very lo-fi, kinda garage rock, this was before they decided they wanted to be the Beatles, and then later decided they wanted to do dance-pop), and maybe the album "Experimental Jet Set Trash and No Star" by Sonic Youth is different from their other records in the sense that it has a more lo-fi rock sound (but darker and more experimental than most lo-fi bands).
