I've always been a fan of this DVD/Book/whatever combination because of all the cool grooves. I've been thinking about getting it, but i thought that over time, through vicfirth.com and drummerworld.com, etc, i've seen so many of the grooves, maybe it's not worth getting it...
does anyone either have the poster of all the grooves, or any more info on this so i can decide before spending the 35 or 40 or whatever it costs?

Dvd is pretty worthless as you can buy the book and/or get it on line.
The jazz/funk and world are the only beats worth it.

Meh.
Nothing Specatular,You can just learn what he does on the Drummerworld site.
Basically.
But yeah, pretty much only the world beats are worth checking into, but in that case you might as well get a Horatio Hernandez, Tito Puente, etc.. instructional book.
He wasn't anything specatcular when I saw his clinic.

Alright, so the DVD is out, but at least the book seems like might be cool to have...where can you get it online?

Vicfirth has the poster online I believe.
You guys are crazy, the DVD is awesome.
Its not just about what he plays (and how well he plays it!) - A lot of the value of this DVD comes from what hes SAYING about the grooves.
Priceless IMO.

Alright, on vicfirth.com i was only able to find a really small image of hte poster which you can then BUY a full size version of, so it's small enough to not be able to read it. does anyone who owns the DVD or just anyone in general know if the poster is available (readable) anywhere on the web?

Tommy taught me the bossa nova groove and I didn't even buy the DVD...so drummerworld is much more useful than I originally thought, just in case anyone was doubting it.

just don't get the john blackwell dvd! it's utter garbage. hardly any instruction or explanation, just him rambling on about stuff and showing off a whole lot.
for $40, I was expecting a lot more, but I suppose it's not worth it to make a huge production when the potential audience is so relatively small.....

IMO you should get the DVD. I agree with DAMO. There's a lot of stuff he's saying that you wouldn't know if you didnt watch it.
For example. The New Orleans groove is a snare groove, played with a swing. If you were looking at the chart and learned that, you would play it straight, correct? It sounds like SHYT straight. The swing makes that groove.
It is a great benefit to watch the DVD, plus it comes with the poster.
There is nowhere online you can get the chart, even if there was, still buy the DVD.
I got my DVD for $15 on ebay, and it was sealed.

well first of all...inbetween...
second of all...what?
What I love most about this DVD:
- It caters for a wide range of styles and levels. By learning the grooves on the DVD, most players could wak into a variety of bands and at the very least, hold their own.
- Its educational rather than just a chops fest and tommy explains everything very clearly.
- Its states the obvious, which is sometimes essential - Take this gem of a quote "It isnt a race. You get zero points for playing hard things badly"
- Tommy defines what a groove actually is
- All patterns are played at two different tempos, with bands, to show where the beats can be applied. This is awesome because players not only learn a groove, but also recognise where and when it can be used.

the thing i love about it is he calls the first four or five beats "grooves".
..i forget where i was going with that.
but i also love how he is speaking so naturally almost like its all off the top of his head. I think he would make a really good teacher.

Getting the poster is obviously the best part about buying the DVD, but like Damo said, Tommy's little speeches between the grooves are full of sage advice. I also learn grooves a lot better by hearing them; I'm sure other people are the same way.

defintely get it, im about to start it with my teacher, tommy is an awesome player, and he really knows his stuff, on the vic firth site there are only a small portion of the grooves in the book and dvd, you'll be much happier with the book and dvd combo, he also has some really awesome performances on the dvd that my teacher showed me, he incorporates a lot of his stuff into those\
in my opinion, its one of the best on the market

Yes.
Inbetwean straight and swung.
Stanton Moore describes it as a "Greasy" feel. It's very pulsed, but not swung, nor is it straight. It's hard to find that beat.
HockyPocky A Way ( Can't be arsed to figure out where the dashes go ) Has that second line rhythem in it, and Ziggy plays it with perfect feel. ( The Metres) .
That's the only way to play it pretty much.
