Ok so I was looking at the Zildjian Z Custom ride, and a 17inch HHX Evo crash at a GC today. If it wasnt for the ten thousand 9 year olds that felt they needed to hit every cymbal and every tom on ever kit I might of gotten some actual shopping done, but I could barely hear any of the damn cymbals I was looking at and I left before the little kid brigade finished. Anyways I'm lookin for a pretty ping ride with not a whole lot of overtones, I have a Sabian AA Medium ride right now and its got way to much overtone for my liking. From what I could make out through all the noise the Z Custom seemed to have a nice ping with little overtone from what I heard. Also I was looking for a new crash and the 17 inch HHX Evolution stuck out to me, it seemed very bright with a nice piercing crash that I think would compliment my heavier AA Medium 16inch crash I have now. So does anyone own either one of these, or has played them and let me know what you think about them? I really didnt get to hear them that great through all the noise , and the GC is like an hour and a half drive to get there so I only go like once in 3 months or so, so I wont be back for a while.

EDIT: and I noticed on musicians friend that they have the regular Z custom ride that I tried out, but they also have a Mega Bell ride and and Brillant Power ride, would those have a more defined pingy ride sound then just the Custom?

The Z Custom Rides are really pingy but they get that gradual roar if you play on them for longer periods of time.
I would suggest a K Custom Ride. They're very pingy with hardly any overtone and a nice, big bell.

Does Zildjian have some type of online sound samples like Sabain does on their site? I looked but didnt find anything on Zildjians site.

you want overtones. They aid in gigging so the audience heres it and so it cuts through the mix. I say a 20" Heavy K

Zildjian A Ping Ride might be something to look at. I have a 20" and love it. You might always want to try out the A Custom version of the cymbal, I hear it's nice though I have not played it.

The already mentioned K Custom is also a great choice.

"you want overtones."

Unless you dont want overtones.

Maybe an Zildjian Earth Ride, or a rock ride from maybe Meinl's rock ride? If you try the cymbal by itself its gonna have overtones and you might think, eh I dont like it. When I got my Sultan ride I tried it out and It had alot of sustain and overtones and I though I dont like this. But when I jamed on ythe whole kit and with my buddies it sounded A WHOLE LOT different. Nice ping and stick definition.
Thats what I dont understand sometime with the whole "try it first" because in my opinion its gonna sound completely different when you start playing with a band.

A cymbal doesnt sound any different when you play with a group, aspects of the sound are just harder to hear, if you can hear them at all. Thats why you think your Sultan sounds different - because there is more noise for it to compete with.

Thats a good point, obviously you'll be able to get some idea in the shop but without my kit and especially the rest of my cymbals i find it hard to know how it'll sound when jamming.
Also i dont know what its like for yee but playing cymbals is frowned upon by most staff in music shops around me. One place even has a "Please don't touch cymbals" sign up.

The sound you as the drummer hears is different than the sound the group hears and that is different than what an audience will hear especially when your kit is miced up. Those sounds you dont like are still there, you just canot hear them because it's being drowned out by everything else you hear. But for others, those sounds you dislike could still be audible.

I wouldn't shop there. I walk into a music store and the first thing I do is try out all of the new cymbals. The guy at my shop is pretty cool about that. A good drum department guy knows that you have to try something out first.

Ya thats true, I dont play any shows and the small room that I have my kit set up in makes you hear every little overtone and ringing after every cymbal and tom hit. And you can try out any of the cymbals at the store I was at, why would they have them out and display just to look at them? I wish they had a better ride selection though because they dont have any of the ones thats been mentioned here, I'll have to go back and try to listen to some again before I purchase one I guess.

The HHX Evo crash is sex. It's for everything.

IMO, of course.
