De-fretting

dont know if someone elswe has posted this but roughly how long and how difficult is it to de-fret your bass? And what do you have to do? i love fretleass but dont have any money to buy one and want to make my bass fretless, any help is much app. :thumb:

It took me best of three days, but thats only cos I coated the neck to use roundwounds.

If you have a spare afternoon and all the tools, about 4 hours inc. dryingtime if you're using wood putty

it doesnt take long at all, i agree with 101er on taking a lil bit outta the afternoon

right now i'm waiting to get polyurethane to finish up my defretting project... its a Michael Kelly, and i'm turning it fretless cause its one of the lower end ones without insane inlays

if you use a wet rag to wipe down the sanded polyeurethane be careful around the trussrod not. i think i got some moisture in there and it locked the nut. when i tried to adjust it the nut busted and i had to take the fretboard off to get to it, lol that sucked.

im 14, and im looking to defret mine. Obviously im not gonna do it myself, i dont want to **** up. or do you think even i can do it? Im a sensible one, and have plenty of common sense. Or shall i get a repair man or whatever

I defretted one of my basses in about 40 minutes. I used and iron and a thin screwdriver and it was easy no chips or anything. Obviously it is scary to do it yourself, but really if you are carefull it will come out fine. :thumb:

billie... you defretted a bass in 40 minutes??? does that include filling in the fret slots and all the other stuff you need do as well? or was that just pulling the frets out

Coooooooooool. Ill go get me some aligator pliers then. If i mess up my dad used to be into woodcraft etc. And you know that somehow dad s know everythign anyway :rolleyes:

i just did it to my squier jazz bass and it sounds quite funky now(im 14 too and i had no problems, neither should you)
