In a silent way is just mindblowingly glorious. It's up there with Electric Ladyland as my top two favorite albums. I've been searching a long time now for other fusion albums with the same sound but I haven't found anything close. Are the complete sessions worth getting, it's a shame the CD is only about 40 minutes.

any suggestions on albums/bands similar to the sound in In a Silent Way?

It's a really obvious suggestion, but Bitches Brew?

Miles' Filles De Kilimanjaro is an oft overlooked little gem. Half of the album uses the second great quintet (with Hancock and Carter on electric instruments), and the other half is comprised of the first released Miles Electric Band recordings with Corea and Dave Holland. I would recommend it. It has the sort of simple beauty on In a Silent Way, and it's pretty much the only album I know of that is similar.

Am I the only person who thinks that jazz rock fusion peaked with Bitches Brew? Everything else afterwards just seems so...contrived to me.

I agree, I just recently picked up a few months ago and it's one of my favorite Miles' second quintet albums.

Also, to whoever said that Bitches Brew is similar to In a Silent Way... it's not really. In fact it's a lot different.

I didn't say they were similar. But they are both incredible albums.

I just got In A Silent Way yesterday. It is indeed amazing. Both are good, but I prefer it to Bitches Brew.

Huh? how? And you mustnt have listened to Weather Report or much of Herbie Hancock or even any Chick Corea to say something like that :)

If youre wanting something totally wack and left of the field:

Skalpel "Konfusion"

Its a remix from a polish DJ/programming duo of Silent Way. You could also consider Bugz In the Attic or Jazzanova for a new take on Jazz too.

Love Silent Way. Love all of Miles really. tho Kind of Blue remains as my #1 on the Lady Lex top 10.

Who is comparing it? Im just curious.. I find Meshelle's stuff incredibly amazing - but not really silent wayish at all. Though it is dark and emotive I guess...

In a Silent Way was one of the albums that got me into jazz recently...

Along with:

Bitches Brew, The Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire, Romantic Warrior, Heavy Weather, and Hot Rats...

I recommend all of those...

I find Herbie Hancock's Crossings to be the natural progression from In A Silent Way. They are very similar in approach, although Herbie and his Sextet + 1 takes the music into a different direction. Dr. Patrick Gleeson is expecially noteworthy on it.

With a few exceptions, having Miles Davis play on your album is a seal of quality. Some of his 80's work is kind of wonky though, oh well.

What does everyone think of Miles Smiles? At the moment, I'm getting blown away by Footprints.

Miles Smiles is amazing.

It's my favorite album of all time.

Which is why I chose it for this:

you think so? I love Youre Under Arrest. Pee my pants everytime I look at the front cover too  Oh dear.. the whole Michael Jackson look is so dated  But the music is awesome. Personally, I find it very ahead of its time (he's got a choice recording in there including him snorting a line of coke.). I love his 80s stuff. esp TuTu. *sigh

Nuh. Miles is ALL good :)
