View Full Version : Best bass tone...

Sorry if this has been done/overdone... but name the song (or bassist) that you believe has the best bass tone.
For me, I believe it would have to be Paul Denman of Sade. It was his work with his Stingray that pushed me to dishing out the $1200 for one. I was on the fence previously...
For examples, listen to Smooth Operator, Kiss of Life, The Sweetest Taboo... or anything off of Love Deluxe or Diamond Life.

Probably Joe Lally from Fugazi, it's nothing special but it works. "Waiting Room" wouldn't be the same any other way.

Lou Barlow, from Dinosaur Jr.
being in a band like Dinosaur Jr., who's sound is based off of building pleasent melodies out of pure noise, fuzz, and chaos, yet having one guitarist who often branches off of the main riff into leads and stuff, gives the bassist a tough job. but Lou made it work.
he uses a rickenbacker pumped with distortion and played thick, driving basslines that often sounded like a guitar, yet still held enough low end in the mix because of his chords and such he used, as well as it simply being because his bass had a perfect tone range that was twangy and high enough to fill in where the guitar left out, but fat and bassy enough to keep the bassline intact.

i'd also like to note that the link to the song Feel the Pain doesn't actually have Lou playing bass on it, but after he left, J. Mascis emulated his tone and playing style for all their albums into the 90's, the only main difference was slightly less volume and less mids.

I love the tone the bassist from Moneen gets in the bridge of Don't Ever Tell Locke What He Can't Do. Also, I'm a big fan of the tone the bassist from Minus The Bear has. Distorted bass can sound great when done tastefully, and not over the top.

Adam Clayton's (u2) tone on Rattle and Hum and the Joshua Tree. Well in any live or studio recording he always gets killer tone.
Simmon Gullup has a pretty nice semi-hollow tone in the Destingration album.
The tone Andres Mendez from Opeth gets in their last album (ghost reveries?) is awesome. Dark and mellow yet very present and clear. Reminds me of Adam CLayton but in a heavy metal setting.
JPJ - His tone on the lemmon Song....just awesome.

I prefered it back when he has his signature Spector that tone was so killer and fully justifed the whole Black Album tour. But still watching him and hearing him inspired me to make a big investment into getting a Sadowsky and they are quite frankly one of the best tone basses around.
