Sometimes, people makes threads about bands they'd like to discuss. And sometimes, they simply make threads shoving artists down people's throats.
This is the latter.
Amos Lee is already one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters on the earth. He's got an arresting, smooth soul voice that isn't a million miles removed from Sam Cooke and Al Green, yet he takes his songwriting cues from Neil Young. He names After The Gold Rush as his favourite album ever. He's been lumbered with the tag 'the male Norah Jones', for various reasons - she plays keys on his album, they're labelmates, they've toured together - but that doesn't do him justice at all. I really dig Norah Jones, but seriously, this guy is above and beyond.
His only album to date (self-titled) stands up to Jeff Buckley's Grace, Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes - any classic album of the genre you could throw at it. It's that good. "Arms Of A Woman", "Keep It Loose, Keep it Tight", "Colours", "Black River", and "Soul Suckers" all stood high in my list of 2005's best songs. It was both the best folk album and best soul album of last year for me.
It probably won't apply to any who doesn't find themselves enjoying downbeat, intimate, romantic singer-songwriter efforts, but this guy needs to be heard by everyone with even the most remote interest in the genre.
