I've been playing for 5 years and i used to be just another 4 string only, closed minded, root noting types, but thanks to Les Claypools program of nothing but primus everyday for 3 weeks (that was by choice), now i'm more creative, more skillfull, more open minded, and an all around better bassist then i was before, i even plan on buying a 6 some day in the future. Anyway since i've stepped into the light, i have started a project with a friend of mine, it can be found here www.myspace.com/energyjerk
enjoy

you've been playing for five years and youve only recently diverged from roots and discoverd less claypool?

Curious, was it supposed to sound really distant or was that a recording problem?

i went through a transition a little over a year ago, but a very different one.
ever since i learned of more advanced techniques, i was all about showy slap riffs, tapped lines, etc. i was in a metal band at the time, and i'd go out of my way to try to get bass solos, through in slap riffs, etc.
then i started my indie band and really started focusing more on the general mix of songs once i bought a guitar, sincee i could then see both ends of the spectrum. ever since then, i've been writing basslines that drive a song, not basslines that put a spotlight on myself. basslines that don't play 100% roots of the guitar or intense showy crazy riffs, but instead simple lines that compliment what the guitar plays. it's worked much better. and i write guitar, too. and my guitar parts are just like the bass, in the sense that i play something that carries the appropriate melody, but doesn't run dry, and still doesn't end up being wankery. the lead melodies are left to our singer and her keyboard.

since this is about myspace...is anyone else having trouble logging in?
And by the way, I don't really dig you're stuff, but you definitely have some cool ideas, keep it up!
i like the ideas you've got, and some of the riffs are nice and catchy; but your technique seems a bit disorientated, and the recording quality is just all over the place...
regardless, i think you've got a good thing going. just clean it up, and keep progressing. it sounds like you've reached a creative enlightenment. good for you.;)

Figures, as soon as I go to create my new bands myspace this happens.
Suicide is my only option I guess.
nah, wait until you get a profile up, so you can at least make a blog about it.

hmmm, as for input, it seems you have tried WAYYYYYY too hard to copy Primus.
also, you seem to not be playing on time with the drums at all. like, to the point where you would be better off taking the drums out.

Can I make the background dark and type in poetry about how tough teenage life is?
well, it's incredibly cliché, so...OF COURSE.:p

indeed, there are some definite timing issues.

impressive force was cool, although the recording quality killed it and made it hard to discern what was being played. the other stuff sounded way too claypool-wannabeish though

thanks for the input and critizcism, the quality of course is edgy because the tracks were made with sony acid and direct input, drum wise; i'm working with a crappy machine and sony acid so timing is kind of edgy. Anyway thats just where im at, i've still got a hell of alot to learn.

You got out of your Rootnote phase, next you will go into a Everyone Sucks That Doesn't Slap Tap and Sing While Doing Backflips. everyone goes through these phases. All part of being a bassist. :D

I couldn't have thought of a worse bassist to inspire you to get a six string to be honest.

Then there's the "only bassists I like are good bassists" phase, which is the same as the "I'm a huge dick" phase.

Same thing happened to me, but it was when I discovered Stu Hamm. He was the first bassist I heard who tapped, and holy **** he blew me away. I'll never forget the first time I listened to Quahogs Anyone?. I was stunned. I couldn't believe there was a whole new world to bass out there that I never encountered til that day. Since then I've gotten into Jean Baudin, Jaco, Victor, Marcus Miller, Sheehan, all the usual bassists we love, but hearing Stu Hamm changed the way I play bass.

TS: I like your stuff, and it's good that you've got into some of Claypool's stuff, I would never have heard of him if it wasn't fo thismplace. Keep it up :thumb:
