Does any one know what amps are good for upright and electric playing? I've been partial to Gallien-Kruegers and I've played an SWR at school (didn't like it), but I'd like to find what else is out there. Problem is, I can't really test out the upright in the store, its not very transport friendly. Any one got any suggestions?

I use a Eden WT550 and schroeder 1212 with uprights a bit and it sounds just fine. Almost any amp will sound ok with an upright using the right eq. Though I would reccommend probably a solidstate amp such GK's as you said and either 12's or 10's for speakers.

a lot of double bass players use the GK MB150E-III/112. It looks small but its loud, for its size.

Acoustic Amps.
The brand? Or an amp that is made for Acoustics? What a crappy name for a company. lol.
Check out talkbass... they have some discussions on things like these. A LOT more upright players over there.

Most quality electric bass amps will be good, as long as you have a good pickup. When I play I usually have 0 mids and treble and full bass, it's the only way I get good tone.

Definitely Eden.
As for something more affordable, Roland keyboard amps actually sound quite nice for an upright.

The first time I played through a GK, it was an upright player's. Sounded great.
