Hipshot Bass Vibrato

Hey, I purchased one of these from Warmoth for my SX but I'm kinda regretting it because there seems like there will need to be a lot of routing involved.

So basically what I'm asking is whether it is worth it (and fairly simple) to install the Hipshot and chop up my body, or should I just sell it on the 'bay and just get a Badass, or a normal Hipshot bridge.

P.S. If this isn't the right forum, just move it. I thought it might be, because of the modding and such but if not, no biggie.

you should have gotten a kahler. they require a lot less routing. it isn't really worth putting that expensive of a bridge in an SX bass. so personally i'd seel the hipshot and either use the money to get a kahler in its place(if you're really set on getting a tremlo for the bass) or just get a normal bridge.

K I'll sell the Hipshot and take a look at the Kahler. But if that still looks too complicated, I'll prolly just buy a normal bridge. I thought it would be cool to have tremelo for a bass but I don't need it that badly.

That bridge is probably worth more than your bass, it might be fun as hell to have the tremolo. I'd go with it, do the routing and all that, after all, what do you have to lose? You could sell the bridge after and just buy another SX.

Hmm true. I'm gonna search around Talkbass and see if anybody has installed one on their basses. I'd like to have some kind of instructions when doing this. Hipshot doesn't give any instructions.

According to the website the bridges come with instructions.

I have seen those hipshot bass trems, I want one myself. Which one do you have (4 or 5 string, chrome or gold, etc)?

I don't think I've ever even heard a bass trem being used before, I'd like to hear it sometime.

Akira: They don't come with instructions. I have a pretty basic understanding of tremelo systems from taking apart my brother's old guitar. It's just a matter of routing correctly.

On their website it says it comes with instructions. So if yours didn't I'd complain.

It also says there's routing templates available. If you look on their website at the "bass tremolo" section, there's templates but they want $40 for them. =/

Peg, go listen to Primus, Les Claypool has a bass Kahler on his CT, the sound is cool

Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, and Dave LaRue's main basses (up until Dave got his Bongos, that is) have Kahler tremolos. Billy Sheehan uses them occasionally as well. I myself would love one, but neither of my basses are good candidates.

I don't think I want to give it away just yet, Brad. But if I do, then I'll look to you first. I'm gonna talk to the Tech Theatre teacher at my school who has much experience in routing, and see if he'll help me out.

Does anyone else think 40 dollars for routing templates is hilariously overpriced? Maybe I'm just ignorant on these matters but it seems crazy.

Yes and no. It would depend on how in depth the template was, and whether or not there were multiple templates (different #'s of strings) involved.
