...with a solid state amp and non-growling Warwick?

Generally, I want to recreate Ryans 'Dig' tone as best I can with my Warwick Corvette $$ and Hartke amp, but what's the best way of doing this?

I have a Boss ODB-3 too if that helps

Cheers guys

Will

Really, to get his tone, get a Warwick Thumb, throw it through an Aguilar amp, and hit it with some compression.

Try tweaking the eq on your amp and run the bass mainly though the bridge pick up, if not exclusively.

Sorry I can't be of more help, I just don't like sounding like other bassists, I prefer to find my own tone.

why would you suggest he get an aguilar head? if you were going to suggest a new head, why not the one that ryan actually uses (ampeg SVT-2Pro)? plus he specifically said getting the tone with a solid state amp.

i doubt you will be able to get a tone like that without the thumb or SVT2. however the main things about his sound are lots of compression, emphasis on the bridge pickup (as already mentioned), a chorus effect that you can select a low pass for the effect (like the boss chorus, i'm not sure what was actually used on the album), play with the eq.

Actually for recording he doesnt use an amp. he uses an avalon U5.

i got really close to that tone with my corvette st.

i used the boss chorus (as mentioned above) with both the compressor on my amp and a little extra from a line 6 constrictor ( dunno why ) bridge pick-up is a must, also, new DR strings

the strings really made the noticable difference for me

I got close using the Bridge MM, and the Hartke had built in Compression, so what should I do with that.

Also, it has a graphic EQ. You reckon high lows, middle mids and high... highs?

I'd say boost the bass but not drastically, shove the low mids right up and make sure there is a good treble presence.

Ryan has never and vows to never use effects. That means he doesn't use a chorus pedal. It's all in the mids! He adds a spike in the high freq. for some extra bite but I'm not shure where he boosts it at.

Well, thats a great way to limit yourself.

I bought a couple of pedals, but now I never use them!

I use my DD-3 when solo, and ODB3 in my band, but yeah, I have no real need for anything fancy in my mix

I'm not going to buy any effects until I have a way to power them. I'm not using batteries... it's way too expensive. I was thinking about getting a synth pedal and an overdrive pedal. I guess I should get a chorus too...

mikespahn

there is no chorus in that tone? it sure sounds like it. the low end sounds tight and un-chorused but the higher frequencies sound like they have quite a bit. i dont see how you would achieve a sound like that with a spike in the mids. i'd love to know how much to boost and on what frequencies though if that is true.

he plays ampeg, an SVT 4 pro to be exact, with an avalon U5 and a warwick thumb NT or a corvette live sometimes. at any rate thumbs arent tha expensive if you get them used like mine its a NT and i got it for 2000 canadian

i'm almost positive that L.D. 50 is drop b and the rest are drop c. i'm also pretty sure his amp is an SVT-2 pro, not the SVT-4 pro.

They're only like $3000 new. Although, I'd prefer the bolt on cause it comes in ovengkol. I already have a bubinga Corvette.

Ryan Martinie uses a svt 4, and l.d.50 is all recording in drop b (B,F#,B,E) and End of all things to come is in Drop C (C,G,C,F) (he uses a 5 string live for songs on this album with tuning (G,C,G,C,F) but you don't need a 5 string to play) and Lost and Found is in Drop C (G,C,G,C,F) most songs need a 5 string but not all. About the tone, today i bought a Lakland Skyline 55-01, which is a fukin great bass by the way i was amazed with the tone it put out for how much it was. I was looking at a Thumb but for half the price i got the same tone pretty much. I use Hartke amp as well i use a 410tp cab with a 2500 head. And i set the EQ with high mid range and bass in the middle and treble in between the two and i got pretty much the sound Ryknow produces. i havent tryed puting all to my back pick up but ill try it and tell you how it goes. But yea if u dont want to spend the money on a thumb check out Lakland basses there fukin great.

I miss Chris so bad. He was one of the funniest cunts on here.

Every single thread contained a picture of Jonas Hellborg when he was here. He would just find a way to connect it to the topic.

Anyway... we should probably let this die >_>
