Ok, since this is a new section, and rightfully named 'luthiery and modding' thanks to wintermute, how about we show off some of our handiwork. Be it guitars or basses you've built or modded, or pedals you've made from the ground up (right now my tube-based wah is getting under way). How about showing off your works so everyone can see how good of work you do sooo then there'll be backing to what you say/ said you've done along these lines.

Post away

Well, since I can't resist any chance to show off, this is a bass that is almost done. Just need to put on the knobs, mount the control cavity door, and put on the strap locks...

Oh yeah, and there's a story. Someone wants me to build him a bass and everything's going fine with the design, then he says "oh, can you make it a headless?".

Edit, just switching to a better pic...

Edit, I guess I killed that pic from my server.....

Can't understand why the guy opted for headless?

Also what was the shaping on the head before?

Now to me that fits in idealy with the style of that particular bass.

to make SoM's bass look even better. here is a bass that i built a new body for. it was just a rough attempt so i could get a feel for what some of the process would be like. and since then i defretted the neck.

Another project nearing completion, 6-string lined fretless with maple lines on the usual marked frets and purpleheart on the rest :)

i like how you lined the fret board with purple heart and maple

that top sheet's beautiful too, love it

the only thing i think could be changed is the headstock right by the nut...IMO it looks a lil bit bulky and outta place

but still your basses are beautiful

its a rangemaster copy, it boosts the highs and gives a light od, its mainly used for driving the hell out of a cranked tube amp. gives you that brian may, tony iommi, early clapton tone with a GOOD tube amp and some humbuckers.

the switch changes the input caps making it a full or treble booster. i forgot to buy the second input cap so right now its just a treble booster.

I'm guessing it's a compressor.

It's claro walnut, and had a crotch running through the board. So there's all the twisted crotch wood expanding out into all the figured walnut. I got two basses, front and back, from the one board for which I paid something like $350. And enough scrap for a few more headstocks.

I use veneer. Cut oversize pieces, glue them in, then trim off the excess with a chisel. Then clean it all up with a radius block.

Don't make my track the hours, I'd probably quit :p

In chronological order:

2002 Hoppus bass Frankenstein Project: I started with a Mark Hoppus Fender Signature that was given to me as a gift. I stripped the bass down until it was nothing more than a blue piece of wood. I replaced the neck with a maple neck, maple fretboard, 13-degree angled warmoth style headstock from warmoth guitar parts. I routed out the P-style routing for an MM style routing which I left in the P position. I custom cut a white/black/white pickguard, and added a jazz bass control plate. I used a Seymour Duncan SMB-4DS pickup and tone circuit. The bridge was a Leo Quann Badass.

1997 Warwick Corvette 4-String: Removed the stock passive MEC pickups and passive tone circuit. Replaced both with a set of DiMarzio Model J's and an Aguilar OBP-3 with an active/passive switch.

2000 Modulus Flea 4-String: Removed the existing Lane Poor MM (despite how many amazing things are said about these pickups I just didn't like it all that much). Replaced it with a Nordstrand MM4.2. Added active/passive, and series/parallel switches as well.

The Hoppus in the one on the right, the Warwick is on the left, the Flea is in the middle (this photo of the Flea bass was taken before the mods were performed)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/edgebass5/DSC00787.jpg

Flea bass after the mods were performed
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/edgebass5/HPIM0485.jpg

1983 Peavey Foundation 4-String: Hardwired the pickups directly to the output jack. In other words there are NO onboard controls for this bass. You plug it in, and that's it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/edgebass5/12122723C.jpg

2005 Warmoth/Status Jazz Bass: Purchased an alder jazz bass body from Warmoth guitar parts and a Status J neck from Status-Graphite in England. Used DiMarzio Model J pickups which are hardwired as neck-parallel/bridge-series and then directly to the output jack. In other words, you can turn the 3 knobs on the control plate, but they're not hooked up to anything at all, so you'll just be fooling yourself. Used a Gotoh 206 that I had lying around for the bridge. Gotoh Delta series tuning machines, Fender Deluxe V string retainer, Fender Jazz bass control plate, Fender jazz bass knobs, and a white pearl pickguard to finish everything out. Neck was installed with EZ-Lock Stainless Steel threaded inserts and 10-24 machine screws (this attachment method is far superior to the typical wood screws that are more commonly used). In the future I will be attaching the bridge with a similar method (the only thing that wil change is potentially the size of the threaded inserts/machine screws involved).

So, this bass is pretty much done. Now only one bass in progress and I think I need a rest after this one and the headless that I just completed. This has a dualcoil and a piezo bridge. Sounds very cool... looks ok too...

Have I done it yet? No.

As far as the woodworking goes it's just dimentional differences. Electrically it's pretty much the same. I have a Strat-like neck-thru in the planning stages...

Most of my wood I buy at Highland Hardwoods in Brentwood NH on Rt. 125. They have an amazing supply of many types of hardwood. Not much of anything highly figured though. In general I find the figured stuff on ebay. And from a couple of suppliers on the west coast (they have ebay stores too).

Bookmatched set I bought on the bay yesterday:

Nah, this one is a 6. Ive got a 7 Im working on now thats gonna be similar though.

Dont know why the humbucker is slanted, maybe someone else will help us out.

variations in tone across the strings possibly..?..?..?

Patrick O)))
05-30-2006, 05:46 PM
That might happen. The pickups will be picking up from closer to the bridge on the higher strings, where the vibrations will be smaller

Dimebag used to do it to his guitars, to give the volume knobs better grip. It's on the USA Custom model too.

You take a solering iron, and push it into the knob at regualr intervals. It melts the plastic and makes it bubble up over the side like that. That's the rough one to make sure I liked the look, I'll do a neat one tomorrow.

I am modding my Squier P-Bass (*coguh*crap*cough*) and maiking alot better. Here's what it looks like now:

http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics/products/2/3/7/268237.jpg

I am going to add:

EMG-PHZ Pickups
New Warmoth Neck (Maple/Maple or Birds-Eye Maple/Birds-Eye Maple, I havent decided yet)
Black Matte Pickguard with a white stripe around the edges.
Hipshot A Style Bridge (Mabye, If not a new Gotoh Bridge).
A decal of Greek symbol Pi on the center of the pickguard (White)
A decal of my name on the top of the headstock (Black)

If you know why I chose it to look this way, I praise you. If you dont know, I want my bass to look like the Bass in the T.V. Show "The Adventures of: Pete and Pete". The Episode is "Hard Days Pete" where Little Pete find his fav. song ("Summerbaby" by Polaris") but only hears the song once and for gets the song. Little Pete is destined to find the song again so he starts a band to learn the song. They learn the song and they play it for days. Well any ways, the bassist for Little Petes band is Ms. Fingerwood, Little Petes Algebra Teacher. Her bass is Black with a Maple neck/fingerboard with the greek symbol Pi on the pickguard. My bass will look the same. I <3 Pete and Pete.

Here's my bass, it's still kinda in the works a good bit. I plan on giving a nice white with silverflake paintjob, and getting the rest of the small parts that aren't on there yet.

It's a washburn 5 string that someone defretted, took the nut and electronics off and it cost me nothing for it. I gave it the stain on the body & neck, for a temporary fix. I payed $100 a complete set of carvin active electronics and pickups, $20 for the strings, $20 more for the knobs and nut. Not too bad for $140.

It's a kinda tight fit.

Here's my ampeg vt60 guitar amp head, which is going to get a few nice touch ups. I plan on putting a new emblem, new tolex, and IF ANYONE knows where to get them, some nice chrome knobs.

Anyways, yeah the maple for the marked frets and purpleheart for the rest did work out awesome. That's a cool bass too because of the Bart pickup plus piezo in the bridge. About the cost, they're all different but usually a bit under 2k.

OK, here I go with some scans of old paper photos:

http://people.freenet.de/bluezz_bastardzz/club40+ls120+strat.jpg

The one on the left is a late '60s semi-acoustic Höfner Club 40 modded with a Seymour Duncan Jeff Beck humbucker at the bridge and new Schaller M6 Mini tuners. The neck had come off, it was painted black on the top, so it was quite a bit of work to get rid of all the lacquer. As a finish I stained and waxed it which feels great. I use it as a slide guitar now, because the neck is too warped backwards to do anything else with it.

The Tokai LS120 has Gibson P-94 single coils now, in 1981 the original pickups were DiMarzio PAFs which sound great in that guitar, too. But I have another Tokai LS60 with Gibson Shaw PAFs, so I like the different sound of the P-94s in this guitar. The first owner had Schaller M6 tuners installed as well.

The strat on the right side is self-built from different parts, i.e. a Mighty Mite 1-piece quilted maple body, hardtail and other brass parts from Rockinger, and an ESP maple neck. The pickups are three Seymour Duncan SSL-1. I tested a lot of different wirings with them, but will probably only keep the additional neck+bridge combination in parallel and maybe in series and definitely the middle+bridge pickup in series combination.

http://people.freenet.de/bluezz_bastardzz/musician+strat+335_small.jpg

The Ibanez on the left is a 1978 Musician MC300 where I changed the pickups like crazy, so it needed special Rockinger brass frames to cover the bigger cavities of the original pickups. I also changed the bridge to a 1-stop brass bridge/tailpiece later. The Luxor 335 copy on the right has the same bridge in chrome and two Seymour Duncan '59s with additional mini-switches for parallel and single coil wiring.

Last but not least here are two pictures of my "work in progress", a Höfner 465/S/E3 archtop from 1963 which some fool had painted black on the top and neck. I still have most of the necessary hardware parts, but may have to work on them as well, e.g. the original 511 pickups.

Thanks, it's not lacquer, but a compound of stain and some sort of wax that has to be rubbed into the wood with a cloth. The color is called "mahogany red" and is also used on the PA speakers (birch plywood) in the back of this picture:

And that is just part of the guitars I've worked on. Modding stuff is such fun.

DO NOT DO THAT... claypool used a bass tremlo. youd probably end up destroying the floyd rose and more than likely your bass. if you want to be like claypool get a kahler bass tremolo.

took ages
cost a fortune

spec's :- 24 fret neck, 2 piece ash body with poplar top, 1 unnamed humbucker, 1 kent armstrong humbucker, 1 quadrail mother bucker, single/series/parallel switching on each pickup, individual on/off switches, 1 volume control.
bi-colour led's blue/yellow (never again).
floyd rose bridge

surprisingly, it played really well as soon as it was put together, with little adjustment needed to the neck relief or intonation.

oh yeah, painted with halfords 'appliance white' paint

basically:

-Carvin 7 string through-body neck http://www.carvin.com/products/single.php?ItemNumber=NT7&CID=GTR/K
- Mahogany wings (maybe a strat shape)
-quilt maple veneer on the body, and headstock
-possibly ivory binding
-string through bridge
-dimarzio pups
-locking tuners

now the colour, a light transparent blue. Almost similar to like a PRS royal blue.

im currently refinishing this now since this had a lousy finish. Also had it reshaped. POst it as soon as im done.

I want to do this, only make the guitar lefty and model it after a Gibson Flying V (for the more 'classic' look) ... and then get a Marshall Mini Stack with that Bogner head.

It'd be fun to have all my gear be miniaturized.

That's actually not a strat body (unless you somehow re-shaped it). Looks more like a Jaguar body. I don't even know if it's from a Fender though, because I can't find a fender with that style body and 3 p/ups.

I have a router table that I use for rounding over the edges of the body. All my other routes are done with the milling machine. It's all hand controls (not cnc) but way more accurate and way less dangerous than a router.

Edit: Oh, unless you mean the outside shape of the body. I do that with a bandsaw, cutting very accurately. Then smooth it out with a spindle sander.

so SOM, a 24 fret 8 string guitar with pretty much the same stuff as the bass ur making, how much would that cost?>

Since you're not saying what you want for hardware I'll just give you a slightly sanded version of the rough quote.

Stay within these constraints:

- Machine Heads - $80
- Bridge/Tailpiece - $100
- Pickups - $150
- Electronics (preamp) - $150
- 5 lam body
- 5 lam neck includes 2 lams of purpleheart or macassar ebony
- Something nice for the top and back, bookmatched

Then I can do $1500.

But I've decided to avoid Cocobolo for the rest of my life, so it can't have that in it.
