Metallica and Slayer are pretty much the only speed/thrash bands I listen to. I have tried to get into Megadeth, but I just can't for some reason. Can someone reccomend some good thrash bands/albums for me?

Megadeth (check out Rust in Peace and Killing is my Business)
Anthrax - Spreading the Disease and Among the Living
Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
Destruction - The Antichrist
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Testament - The Legacy
Coroner - Punishment for Decadence
There's some essentials to get you started. If you want song recommendations, just ask. Oh yeah, check out Heathen, you can download their first two albums at http://www.heathenmetal.com

For Meshuggah, Destroy Erase Improve is a great album. I has its moments too. Chaosphere is decent, but get the others first. As for similar bands, check out Dillinger Escape Plan if you haven't already. And although many will probably disagree, I think a lot of Nevermore's riffing is similar to Meshuggah's.

I've only really heard 'Chaosphere', and like it. For similar bands, Frederik Thorendal's Special Defects is great, and has the guys from Meshuggah. A Life Once Lost is also like meshuggah, but not as good in my opinion.

Check out a band called Scarve (and their album Irradiate). I don't like them much, but they remind me a bit of Meshuggah.

I can help you out with Dio at least.
"Holy Diver"
"Rainbow in the Dark"
"We Rock"
"Last in Line"
"Master of the Moon"
These are some good ones. Their greatest hits cd in my opinion was pretty good, and if I remeber correctly its not too expensive.

Thank you for mentioning them man, I was about to buy their latest album and forgot.

Metalizer (cheesy lyrics, I know)
The Hammer has Fallen
Shadows
Thunderstorm

For In Flames, I have an album called "Colony." It's pretty good, but "THe Jester RAce" is supposed to be their best. For Ill Nino, their latest album "confession" sounds pretty good.

I downloaded some of the songs of their new album and it blew me away. Its amazing. If this band don't become huge it will be a crime against music.

Watchtower - The Eldritch
Spastic Ink - Aquanet
Spiral Architect - Insect
Dysrhythmia - Four, Five, Six Minutes Late
Behind the Arctopus - Alcoholocaust
Cause for Effect - pretty cool jazzy grind with bass, drums and vocals. Their songs are very small, I'm not sure which one to mention
EDIT
In case you care about tabs I think there are some for the first 3 ones on powertabs.net

Hey guys, looking for some more melodic death metal. Below are some of the bands I've heard and liked:
Arch Enemy
At the Gates
Dark Tranquillity
In Flames
Insomnium
early Soilwork
And also, I know that Children of Bodom are power metal with harsh vocals, are there any more bands similar to that. Just wondering and thanks for any help with some recommendations.

I'm looking for drumming that just owns. I know there's endless directions you can go in, but I've gotten inoto Mayhem lately, and I need more. Not so much straight blastbeats throughout. But just dominating drumming. Maybe early Carcass or Nile is what I'm looking for.
I was probably also looking towards Mithras, and a few early Death albums that I still don't have. And I don't know why I haven't ordered them yet. I'll get Leprosy, Human, and maybe Scream Bloody Gore.

Some Dead Soul Tribe sounds fairly similar to Tool, especially their self titles album.
Earshot sound almost exactly the same, up to the point where they could be a cover band.
Indukti are like tool but with violins and largely are instrumental.

I have heard a couple of Children of Bodom songs, one of them being "Needled 24/7" I liked Needled... What would be a good first album by them for me?
Also, I am looking for my next Slayer album. I have Reign in Blood, however, the shortness of all the songs bugged me, and a lot of them sounded similar. I have been looking at Seasons in the Abyss. Is that a good one for me?

I have heard a couple of Children of Bodom songs, one of them being "Needled 24/7" I liked Needled... What would be a good first album by them for me?
Also, I am looking for my next Slayer album. I have Reign in Blood, however, the shortness of all the songs bugged me, and a lot of them sounded similar. I have been looking at Seasons in the Abyss. Is that a good one for me?
Needled 24/7 is off of Hate Crew Deathroll. The songs on that album have that same vocal style, and generally similar songwriting, so that would be a good place to start. But most people will tell you that Follow the Reaper and Hatebreeder are their best, so you may want to check out a few songs off those too and see what you like most.
Seasons in the Abyss has generally longer songs than Reign in Blood, and the style is fast but with definite melody, so yes I'd say its a good album to check out. South of Heaven also would be good, its got a slower yet still heavy feel. Those are my two favorites from Slayer, so I'd advise getting both eventually.

i bought dream theater- images and words, and i liked it, but i only really liked the harder side of them, so i only thought they were ok. I heard train of thought is harder, so im buying that, but i want to buy another one. which one is the best out of scenes from memory, 6 derees of inner turbulence, and awake. i would prefer something a little diff than images and words, because even though it seemed like most people thought it was the best thing ever, i want something slightly different. it was pretty good though.

Scenes from a memory and 6 degrees are good...avoid awake and train of thought or at least until after you have their better stuff

Anyways, what would be a good first Fear Factory album?
Well, I listened to "Obsolete" first, and I love that album. I'd recommend that one. I didn't enjoy "Digimortal", I'm kinda glad they stopped after that album, if future releases were to sound even more like it. "Concrete" is also very good, it's probably their most brutal album. If you don't know Concrete, it was released last, but recorded first. It supposed to be released before "Soul of a New Machine" but it never was released. It's Fear Factory at their most vicious sounding.
Bottom line - Obsolete or Concrete are the ones you want to go with
Songs:
Concrete - Big God/Raped Souls (the drum work is excellent), Crisis, Escape Confusion, Soulwomb, Echoes of Innocence, Self Immolation, Piss Christ
Obsolete - Shock, Securitron (Police State 2000), Descent, Hi-Tech Hate, Freedom or Fire, Resurrection

Counting Crows: I love all their albums but the one that seems to be universally loved by everyone is August and Everything After, possibly because it involves alot less pop music in there sound. If you prefer the pop sound you can get "Hard Candy" which features Vanessa Carlton and Ryan Adams on background vocals. Or you could go out and get the old best of album called Films About Ghosts.
The crows have toured with many great bands such as The Who, and The Rolling Stones. There music features tons of instruments, and a great singer/songwriter Adam Duritz. Most of the songs are more sad, but some songs like Hanging Around and there most famous song "Mr. Jones" are more uplifting.

What Nile albums would you reccomend?
I know almost nothing about the band, but have heard many great things. I'm a fan of anything that has brutal, raw guitar riffs. And what kind of vocal style are they?

What is the best Burzum album?
It depends what style of Burzum you're looking for.
Varg's later work has ambient parts thrown in, as well as the raw black metal sound.
I'd go with either Det Som Engang Var, or Hvis Lyset Tar Oss for starters.
Hvis Lyset Tar Oss uses keyboards and has lots of ambience, if you're into that. If not, go for Det Som.
For songs to check out...
Lost Wisdom (Det Som Engang Var)
Key To The Gate (Det Som Engang Var)
War (Burzum)
Det Som Engang Var (Hvis Lyset Tar Oss)
Ea, Lord of the Depths (Burzum)
Black Spell of Destruction (Burzum)

Glad you like the band though. :)

Thrash wise i think testaments best album is the legacy. The Ritual is also a good album, but not thrash.

I'm looking for some new music to listen to. I listen to a lot of thrash and progressive rock/metal. I've been listening to Opeth a lot lately, possibly something similar to them. I'm also looking for some more obscure, really good metal bands. I'm open to new stuff, so whatever you think I'd be interested in would be great. Thanks.
If you like opeth try Disillusion (their album Back to Times of Splendour is amazing) and also Dark Suns, both are in similar vein as opeth.
Some obscure bands, all definatley worth checking out if you can find anything by them.
Thrash: Wargasm, Paradox, Osiris, Realm, Laaz Rockit
Prog: Frantic Bleep, Moon of Steel, Indukti (highly recommend this band), Riverside

I want to get my friend into growling vocals, but i'm not sure where to start. Suggestions?
Start with melodic death and maybe metalcore bands and such things.
IE :
In Flames
Dark Tranquillity
Arch Enemy
At The Gates
Trivium
all That Remains
Lamb of God
etc etc
Then work in harsher and harsher vocals from other bands slowly.
AA-12

Well, he likes that but not growling vocals such as death metal.
So you want him to get into Death metal.
You sort of just have to grow to like that.
Try some Morbid Angel at first.

start him out on some Death maybe?
Give him some Lord Worm era Cryptopsy, and if he can handle that and like it, he will like pretty much any death metal vocals.
Other then that, I might give more suggestions later, but for now I have no idea other then just diving right into death metal growls.

Well, he likes that but not growling vocals such as death metal.
Force feed it to him, it's the only way. :p
Play him some Lord Worm era Cryptopsy, and anyting else with really brutal vocals.
If that doesn't work, you could always try Death, and Morbid Angel for starters.

I would definately not recommend Cryptopsy and Lord Worm to a DM newbie. Try Quo Vadis - Legions of the Betrayed.

TSASI, i really do think if you want to get him into growling, start with softer opeth, work in some heavier opeth, move onto bloodbath, then continue until you reach lord worm era cryptopsy

I can pretty much sum it up by saying that Ritual De Lo Habitual is all that you need to get in my opinion, even though some of the songs are a bit too long. I haven't really heard any of their other stuff that's grabbed me to be honest.
123, Ritual De Habitual is an excellent album, but don't get me wrong, it has it's faults...

Not metal, but can I recommend you check out Smells Like Teen Spirit by Tori Amos? It's an acoustic version of the song, sung by a woman, and it's absolutely beautiful.
I'm going to expand on this and recommend the entire album that song is off of, Strange Little Girls. Tori does exceptional interpretations of very good songs by an extremely wide range of artists.

Tori Amos has done Raining Blood but that's the other way round really. HIM did Larger Than Life which I like.

Smells Like Teen Spirit isn't on Strange Little Girls. It's on Crucify and Winter (both EPs).
In any casem the covers she did early in her career on EPs are far better than the majority of Strange Little Girls.
