Orange Goblin I already have some stuff by, I just forgot to mention :p Same with Eyehategod incase anyone is about to suggest them.
I'll check out Danzig, thanks :)
I have some Crowbar stuff, and although they're classed as sludge/doom I don't really see the resembelance between them and COC/other sludge bands. Grand Magus are classed as doom as well for some reason, even though only their second album only hints at it at certain palces. This is why I hate these Genre names :)

I think Crowbar get shoved in there because of their connection to Down.

Orange Goblin rock so hard, their gig at the Academy 2 got cancelled though because not enough tickets were sold. Criminal :(
They moved it to the Bar @ Academy though so everything was ok.

Not a fave of mine, but all I can get uploaded right now.
PS, Crowbar I do not like...

Some Danzig tracks would be great.
Silly Genres, I wish they would sort themselves out
Black Label Society are classed as Southern Metal as well, But I already have stuff by them.
I guess stoner rock is kinda related to this sound as well so would Kyuss, being one of those bands that I've always meant to check out but never quite got around to, have a similiar-ish sound?

Yes, and if you like them, then;
The Awesome Machine
Mannhai
Nebula
Fu Manchu, maybe.
Maybe also Hangnail, though they're only alright.
EDIT: Though I said I was loathe to recommend things I'd not heard much by - Hermano. And probably almost everything else that Give Me Beer recommends.
Again, asking for Nevermore recommendations.
The River Dragon Has Come
Dreaming Neon Black
The Sounds Of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel cover - no, I'm not kidding)
Deconstruction
Beyond Within
Believe In Nothing
Insignificant
Narcosynthesis
Enemies Of Reality (the album) had awful production, and the material wasn't up to their usual standards, so stay away from that. Dreaming Neon Black and Dead Heart In A Dead World are both definitely worth a look though.

Best Slayer albums. Anyone help ?
Reign in Blood is the most well known, and flows best as an album, but I prefer Seasons In The Abyss because the individual songs are better.
But damn, Reign in Blood is fast.

The Red Sparowes, possibly. They're less heavy/metal than what you list, though (closer to post-rock)
Cult of Luna if you want to go the other way.
I'm sure there are more, but my mind has gone blank.

05-26-2005, 05:03 PM
You might be thinking of Lacuna Coil there. They don't sound much like any of the bands you're looking at though. Cult of Luna are Swedish and, as far as I know, all-male. I can recommend their second album (The Beyond) and most of their first, self-titled, one, but I haven't heard their most recent, Salvation. Most reports I've heard indicate it's not quite as dense and oppressively heavy as, and just-as-good-as-if-not-better than, The Beyond. I should really pick it up myself actually.

He left Bizkit to form Eat the Day, but they didn't officially release anything. Though there are probably Mp3s of some of that stuff around somewhere.
He also was in Big Dumb Face, as already stated. The album is good, though most likely nothing you would expect.

Many people here know Kyuss? (I think I got the spelling right?)
Alot of people on these forums talk about them, but I have a few questions:
1. What 'style' music do they play? And
2. What is their best song? By best I mean, the song that defines the band the most.
James Howlett
05-30-2005, 01:34 PM
Kyuss style is called 'stoner' or stonermetal. It's defined by downtuned guitars played sometimes over bassamps.
Best song. I like 50 million year trip and greenmachine alot. Try the Welcome to Skyvally or Blues from the red sun albums, they are Kyuss best work I think.
Thank you :)
However, I still don't understand what stonermetal is. :p

I need to get a Dream Theater cd. I like what I've heard, and I will be seeing them when they come to Florida for Gigantour. I'm having a tough time deciding what album of theirs to get. Train of Thought is the heaviest Dream Theater album and alot of the solo work is very shred based. So if you really like heavy, shreddy music then get it.
Scenes From A memory is alot more varied. It has the heavy moments and the shred moments, but also mellow and emotional moments. It gives a better idea of Dream Theater as a whole, I think, instead of just giving an image of one of their elements.

i've got them all par Salival, just need to listen to a whole album which takes approximatly 3 weeks as that is the average album / song length of Tool stuff.

Same goes for Dark Tranquility.
Kalmahs old old stuff is heavily leaning towards melodic death metal, rather than their power metal of today.

As in avant-garde metal in general?
Solefald*
Peccatum
Lux Occulta*
Maudlin of the Well
The Meads of Asphodel
Emperor*
Asmegin (more like folk metal but still fairly close)
Borknagar
Diabolical Masquerade
Evergrey (more progressive than avant-garde)
Vintersorg (more progressive than avant-garde)
Windir
*later albums only
No one is really that clsoe to Arcturus and so assume that all of these have a (sort of) after them

The Allman Brothers Band
Elton John
The Kinks
Black Sabbath
Queen
The Clash
Neil Young
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Crosby, Stills, Nash And Young
Bob Dylan
The Beach Boys
They're all very good bands/artists in their own right and go well that the list which you gave as well.
Don't forget about:
The Beatles
Johnny Cash
Canned Heat
George Thorogood and the Destroyers
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Stevie Ray Vaughan
and definitly check out the Velvet Underground

i recently purchased neurosis's eye of every storm, which i think at the moment is my favourite album. Which album do any of you think i should get next?
I've heard people say they have got progressively better all the way up to 'The Eye of Every Storm'. It may be best to work back chronologically through there releases.
I can't help any more than that though sorry. 'The Eye of Every Storm' is such a bad *** album though.
Can someone recommend me an album which I will love? I'm willing to give any genre/band a try.

Bodom wouldn't appeal to hardcore metalcore fans, unless they were willing to try other stuff...

Are Cacophony's albums worth buying? I'm a big fan of Marty, but haven't heard Becker.
Also, what about Friedman's solo releases?

I tried but it isn't working. It downloads, but it won't play. I'll probably end up buying the album anyway. I looked at tabs for some of the songs and they look extremely technical. Thanks anyway though. It's the thought that counts.

You have to download it, then open the file. It doesn't play automatically.

I know it doesn't play by itself. The file won't open up to play, I know where the file is and how to open it, the players just won't play it.

Okay, so I think Rush is okay. They don't do much for me, but when I watch Neil play I'm still amazed and want to learn what he's playing. So, what do you guys think is the album with the best drumming?
