Start out with some Death, Quo Vadis, Gorguts, and Cryptopsy.

You can go deeper into the genre once you listen to some basics.

I'm not a death metal expert, but try:

Morbid Angel
Obituary
Necrophagist
Death
Psycroptic

I don't think Cryptopsy is for someone looking to get into the genre, as it's not the most accessible thing in the world. I'd recommend Death, Possessed, Vader, Morbid Angel, Arghoslent, and Arsis.

I was started out on Cryptopsy, Atheist, Cynic and Gorguts, and I like to think I turned out okay.

I actually think Cryptopsy are a good band to introduce people to death metal with; even if they hate the drumming because 'it's all just fast and pointless', you can at least impress upon them just how amazingly fast it is, and even if they dismiss the vocals because 'they're all just stupid growling', you can at least get them to see how impressive Lord Worm is. And that often seems to lead to liking the band later on.

posessed, if you do research on them and understand my avatar you'll know why.

Start off with Dark Side Of The Moon, then get Wish You Were Here. If you like them, get Animals and The Wall, and then The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and Meddle. After that, buy them in just about whatever order you feel like, as those are generally regarded as their best albums.

I think Ride The Lightning and Kill 'Em All would be thought of by most people as their next two best albums, although some people would say that The Black Album is as good. Everything after that has been progressively more disappointing, although you might want to pick up S&M.

Alright, thanks a lot bro

I decided to order Testament's-The Legacy, and I may pre-order the new System of a Down Cd, but the Judas Priest selection is killing me.
I'm now deciding between Sad Wings of Destiny, and Screaming for Vengeance.

I downloaded some of the songs you recommended last night, and that is some great music. I can't believe I haven't discovered some of this music earlier. When I was dling some songs I stumbled across a neurosis song (yea i don't know how i did it either). I really liked what I heard, so can anyone tell me what are some good songs from them?

FYI the song was Lost.

For those of you who Haven't heard of or heard the band Green Carnation, Buy a record (CD) called Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness. The song is a little over an hour and will leave you speachless if you like that kind of music. I absolutely love that song, and has become a Masterpiece in my music collection. :thumb:

I know the album A Sun That Never Sets is good, because I've actually heard it. Other than that I'm more or less useless for Neurosis. I think Souls at Zero is supposed to be good, as is Neurosis and Jarboe (the Swans vocalist), but don't take my word for it.

Go for the newest Neurosis. THey get increasingly better as they seperate themselves from their hardcore roots. The Eye of Every Storm is probably my favorite. And also check out similar bands like Isis and Mare or the mellower side which has Pelican and The Red Sparrows.

What is with the animal names?

Can anyone recommend me some metal bands that don't have nasty vocals? The whole screaming/growling just doesn't do it for me. Also I don't like Black Metal or Death Metal and all that category. Also, I don't like bands that have excessive Satanic lyrics so none of that either if you can. If it's one or two songs only, that's okay though.

I'm a big fan of stuff like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Edguy, Masterplan, stuff like that, I also enjoy some progressive metal like Symphony X.

Also, so you guys don't recommend me anything I already have. I already know of Manowar, Helloween, Saxon, Metalium, Lost Horizon, Iron Savior, Iron Fire, Firewind, Rhapsody, Falconer, Dragonforce, Motorhead, Magic Kingdom, Dragonheart, Cryonic Temple, Blind Guardian, KISS, Rush, Angra, Adagio, Nightwish, Power Quest, Queensryche, Sonata Artica, Stratovarius, Timo Kotipelto, Yngwie Malmsteen, Symphorce, Steel Attack, Racer X, Dream Theater, Katatonia, Procupine Tree, Valhalla... as well as the above bands I mentioned...

Anyways I know more than them but I'm thinking I should stop naming bands there...

You sir, are a pussy. :p

Well, you are just missing out on tons of great music though, also the bands that mix clean and harsh vocals as well. May I ask what bands from the death and blakc metal genre you have heard, and how long have you given time to listen to them?

So...you don't like growled or screamed vocals, but you still like Katatonia? Obviously only like the later part of their works...

But anywho, some of these bands might not fit your exact tastes, but they have clean vocals and are good though.

Arcturus (stay away from songs from their first album since it is mostly screaming)
Age Of Silence
Winds
Dream Evil
Hammerfall
Kamelot
Nevermore
Otyg
Paradise Lost (last 5-6 full lengths)

I'm not a *****, I just don't enjoy screaming and growling and I'm not too big on Satan stuff that's all. Nothing wrong with that.

What I heard from Katatonia so far isn't that much screaming.

Anyways thanks for your suggestions but most of the bands you mentioned there I have and forgot to put on the list  but I'll check out the ones I don't have.

And the stuff that I don't like about Death/Black Metal is just mainly the screaming. Also as I mentioned I don't like overly satanist bands. Anyways that's just my tastes.

a great classic rock band that isnt well known is Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Try listening to Four Dead In Ohio, and Southern Cross. Joe Walsh is an awsome rocker, he was the guitarist for the eagles. Try Rocky Mountain Way, Funk 49, and Lifes Been Good. Traveling Wilburys (George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne) are a great, stacked, and a pretty unknown band.

I need some very sad/dark sounding music, basically like Doom Metal. I need a lot of bands, preferably ones that are not too hard to find. I'd also prefer that the guitar would be distorted sometimes.

Lightning Rider, you have to check out Into Eternity (www.intoeternity.net) they are on Century Media and have a beautiful mix of Clean vocals and well thought out and well placed death vocals. They're "Progressive Metal for the Death Metal fan and Death Metal for the Progressive Metal fan". One of my favourite bands. The great thing is I live in the same city as them and found out about them from the net before ever seeing them live or meeting them. It was this band that broke me into underground metal.

I too always seek clean vocals or a good mix. Can anyone recommend me anything in the way of Swedish melodic? I'm a huge fan of Soilwork and bands like Evergrey. Any thoughts?

Desperate Cry

Porcupine Tree, King Crimson, Radiohead (at times), and I've heard Tool compared to them. The first two of those are probably the best comparisons to make though, although it's hard to find many bands that really sound a lot like Pink Floyd. For their earlier, more psychedelic stuff, try bands like The Doors, The Beatles with albums like Magical Mystery Tour, and maybe some stuff by Cream as well.

Ignore that Tool comparison :smash: , that´s just a bunch of Tool fanboys overrating their favorite band.

And actually, while you, and I, are here. Which do you recommend out of Fishing for Luckies? or Fishing for More luckies? I'm leaning more towards the latter.

Well the first one, the fan club release, only has six tracks. I'm not sure you'd be able to find a copy of that anyway.

Fishing For More Luckies has nine tracks, and includes all the 'important'* FFL tracks - Sky Babies, Do the Channel Bop, Schizophonic, Inglorious - as well as a few others exclusive to the release, including what is (I think) the first appearance of Geordie in Wonderland, and an alternate (longer) version of I Wanna Go.

The Fishing For Luckies re-release has 10 songs, and also includes the 'important' tracks listed above, as well as other tracks only really available on that album (and also, inexplicably, Sick of Drugs and Red Light-Green Light). As usual, the only real solution is get both :) I think the important thing really is to have heard Sky Babies, Schizophonic and Do the Channel Bop. The tracks exclusive to each disc make a nice extra, though. The tracklistings, so you can make your own mind up in the end, are;

FFML
1. Inglorious
2. If Life is Like A Lovebank I Want An Overdraft
3. Schizophonic
4. Do The Channel Bop
5. Geordie In Wonderland
6. Sky Babies
7. Underkill
8. Saddened
9. I Wanna Go Where The People Go (Early Version)

and for FFL re-release;
1. Inglorious
2. Sick Of Drugs
3. Red Light-Green Light
4. Schitzophonic
5. Soul Searching On The Planet Earth
6. Do The Channel Bop
7. Mood Swings & Roundabouts
8. In Like Flynn
9. Sky Babies
10. Nite Songs

FFML was the first I got, so I'm partial to it.

*Sky Babies is an important track because it's the longest they've ever done (11 1/2 minutes), and also close to the best. It was something of a live myth until they played it live on every date of a tour a couple of years ago, so it's got some cool fan mythology attached to it.
Schizophonic is important because, apart from a great song, they sometimes play it live.
Do the Channel Bop is important because 1. it's effortlessly cool, and 2. Silverginger 5 sometimes play it live.

munky_magik
05-09-2005, 07:03 PM
I was gonna get both anyway, but I just wanted to decide since I'm going to order the Along comes Mary single from Amazon and I figured I should make it a worthwhile order.

Depends what you want. For example, The Downward Spiral is more rock/metal orientated, harder-edged material, though it does have softer, sometimes ambient, moments (including the world-slaying Hurt). The Fragile, on the other hand, is more or less the opposite; it's on the whole more experimental that TDS. It's also a double album, where TDS is single.

I have a feeling that this should go in Other Music but we all know how much traffic that place gets.

I've been looking into Industrial, Darkwave, EBM etc. but I'm fairly new to it for the most part because there's just so much to get through basically.

At the moment I have some bands that I suspect from reveiws and stuff are good but I either can't get a hold of anything by them or I'm not sure of which album to get etc.

Faetal
Code 64
The Retrosic
Pain
Neuroticfish
Children On Stun
Hanzel Und Gretyl
Juno Reactor
Dulce Liquido
My Sixth Shadow
NIMP

I'm not sure if this is strictly allowed in the thread but what the hell. Which are worth following up and which just suck? Any other suggestions? Also, which Wumpscut album to get? I hear they vary in quality quite a lot. And are Audrey Horne worth investigating?

I feel terribly impolite quoting myself again but I'm just waiting till somebody who knows anything comes along. I managed to get some Dulce Liquido and Juno Reactor on Soulseek so that's a thumbs up. :)

I would help but I don't know any of those artists. You could make a thread in Other music. It does get less traffic than other forums, but far from none, and I think you'd have more luck there. More chance of people able to help seeing it, anyway.

Thanks :)

Hope you like them.

I shall try that I think. Do Industrial go under R&M? That was always a grey area to me I dunno.

I apologise for seeming rude and "you don't know anything about music" and stuff. :)

Bartender

Well, industrial is a weird genre; some of it can fit under R&M, but that's more industrial metal (the blend of two genres). Lots of it fist best under Other, I'd think.

evilmenhavenosongs
05-10-2005, 01:53 PM
So you could say stuff like NIN would fit into R&M but you have to put stuff like KMDFM under Other. Based on a band by band basis. Righto. Thanks for clearing that up.

Good guitars and singing...
There are the obvious prog metal/rock bands like Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Dead Soul Tribe, Tool and Ayreon. Tool and Dead Soul Tribe are a little less amazing guitarwise, but those vocals are nicer. Well, Ayreon uses many vocalists, one being from Dream Theater and another from Dead Soul Tribe.

Then if that's not your style, you might want to try out nu-metal. In specific, System of a Down and The Deftones, though I like Chevelle quite a bit as well.

If you're a little more open minded, Arcturus, Ulver (early), Opeth, Agalloch, Solefald, Emperor (late), Age of Silence and Winds are all amazing.

Dredg, Soli i Sombra, The Mars Volta and Porcupine Tree are some of my favorite prog rock bands. This is probably the best category for someone not broken in to metal yet.

Genreally, Something Wicked This Way Comes is considered IE's best album. But, for the most part, I don't really see a massive gulf in quality between any of their releases, except the first two, and the most recent one, all of which are a big step down in quality. You definitely want an album with Barlow on, I can tell you that much.

You could always get The Blessed And The ****ed, which is a pretty good 'greatest hits'. It's a double disc, too, so more value for money.

A Change of Seasons. It's the EP CD, it's absolutely great. It has that one track with 3 Led Zeppelin covers combined into one track. It's sexy.

Actually, it's five tracks.

1. A Change Of Seasons
2. Funeral for a Friend - Love Lies Bleeding (Elton John live covers)
3. Perfect Strangers (Deep Purple live cover)
4. The Rover - Achilles Last Stand - The Song Remains the Same (Led Zeppelin live covers)
5. The Big Medley (Pink Floyd - In The Flesh, Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody, Kansas - Carry On My Wayward Son, and some other blues track that I can't remember the name too)

Human's probably the best overall, its both very progressive and heavy, its really an amazing album with sick riffage. The Sound of Perseverance and Symbolic are great progressive death albums, still with their "in your face" moments though. All out aggression with less complexity? Scream Bloody Gore is the way to go.
