Is De Mysteriis the best Mayhem album?
If so I'm really turned off to black metal... that album is so boring to me.
Any Emperor I might like though? I've heard a lot about them, and I feel I should give the genre another try.
I like Emperor a lot..try the song Into the Infinity Of Thoughts.
@Bartender, I don't know many other bands like that that I can think of at the moment, which is why I'm asking for more. I can send you some songs tommorow or sometime later, if you want, and give you a better idea, and you might just like it as well.

Okay..I'm on 56K at the moment, so getting songs from people is a pain, but if you uploaded one or two, I could take the time to download them whilst watching TV or something.
If you've got a decent connection, try downloading some VNV Nation (try "Darkangel (Gabriel)", or some Wumpscut if you can find some, and let me know if I'm on the right track..they're the only bands brought to mind by the genre you asked for.

Beneath The Remains, Schizophrenia, Arise and to a lesser extent, Morbid Visions. But, if you like Soulfly and their whole 'Tribal' sound, then you'll probably dig Choas A.D. and Roots aswell.

Dillinger- I personally prefer Miss Machine to Calculating Infinity because it is much more diverse, while Infinity is pretty nonstop with the onslaught.
Opeth-All of them. Good starting place is Blackwater Park.

Hmm... either that, or Live in Leipzig. But you don't like that, then yeah, Mayhem probably isn't for you. That doesn't mean you won't like black metal though.
Any Emperor I might like though? I've heard a lot about them, and I feel I should give the genre another try.
For albums get Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk or In the Nightside Eclipse.
For songs try:
Thus Spake the Nightspirit
Ye Entranceperium

I am the Black Wizards
Inno a Satana
Curse All You Men

well I'm not really fan of this kind of progressive (I like the watchtower-ish technical/progressive metal) but here's what I've heard from people and read from reviews:
Conception - Parallel Minds
Vanden Plas - The God Thing
Fates Warning - The Spectre Within or Awkening the Guardian (from their less progressive era)
DisposableHeroes

meh...Lateralus was my first Tool album, and although it took a while to grow on me from liking it to loving it, I'd still say it's a better place to start than Aenima. Getting either of them is a good decision though, as I don't think there's a huge difference in quality between the two albums.
Lateralus was my first Tool album too, and didn't affect my liking of them negatively, so yeah.
I'd say just get whichever is cheaper/more easily available, since what Med's said about the matching quality of the two is about right.

For Interpol..I've only heard Antics, and it's good enough to buy. Turn on the Bright Lights is supposedly as good if not better, though, so either should be fine, I'd think.

I've heard rumors of Yes starting out as a Psychadelia band, before finally establishing a well-known sound on their third album. Supposedly, their debut album, Yes, was done by a Yes startign out as a psychedlic Beatles-covering band. By The Yes Album, they had finally identified witha sound to call their own, one that stuck witht hem for a number of years. Their early-70's stuff (and there is plenty of it) is high quality Progressive, with more than hints of Space-Rock and Psychadelia thrown in. Also, their Tales From Topographic Oceans album is pretty out there, with 20 minute songs and very high-concept songwriting... I personally find it amazing, but it's one of the biggest love-it-or-hate-it albums of all time.
Could someone recomend some Gn'R kind of bands? I'm looking for rockin' bands but not really metal. Thanks!
Other bands I'm into are:

Consider getting Agaetis Bryjun, which a lot of Sigur Ros fans think is their best album, even beating ( ). For more prog, I'm recommending Be by Pain Of Salvation to anyone and everyone who'll listen at the moment (expect a review in the next few days), as I think that's a great album. Although it's not prog as such, if you've never heard Endtroducing by DJ Shadow, I think you should do, as that always seems to have progressive elements to me.

Yeah, Tom Sawyer is a great song, and has some really cool keyboard work. In fact, it's just an all-around great song. I don't know Spirit of Radio, though.
Iai, you want good acoustic Alice in Chains songs?

I've no idea. Not enough of an AIC fan to know :)
The EPs I'm talking about are Sap and Jar Of Flies. Both are mostly acoustic, with some electric guitars for the lead work.
You still haven't come to the Pink Floyd thread.

is there like...a search i can use to look through this thread? so i can see if someones asked for this before?
I was wondering if someone could recommend some extreme music for me. I'm not to concerned with technical music, just as long as it's brutal. Right now I'd like it if someone could recommend some good Grindcore.
Bands I've heard of: Dying Fetus, Brodequin, Thegalvinwilhelmmillerquartet, er...not much other grind. Any good recommendations are great, whether it's grind or not. Thanks. links to sites would also be great.

Top right of the page, just above the postcount number of the first post, is the search function.
Grindcore albums to try;
Napalm Death (some stuff, mostly their earlier albums; try Scum, one of the defining grind albums)
Carcass - again, earlier stuff only (like Napalm, they moved to death metal later). Their grind albums are Reek of Putrefaction and Symphonies of Sickness.
Brutal Truth - Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses
Brutal Truth - Need For Control
Extreme Noise Terror - Holocaust in Your Head
Terrorizer - World Downfall
Total ****ing Destruction - all their stuff is up for download here (http://welcome.to/total****ingdestruction), I think.
Bolt Thrower are grind/death metal, and are awesome, so check them out.
Just for information though, Dying Fetus (not sure about Brodequin, and haven't heard of the last one) aren't really grind.

What 'genre' would Where I'm Going by Down fall under? Need to know to try and find some more similar stuff. Does anyone have any recommendations for a person that loves that song for similar sounding songs/artists?
Don't know that song, but Down are stoner metal.

Yeah but this song is definitley not metal, it's acoustic, sounds very...American...I don't know the word for it...not folky, probably bluesy seeing as blues > rock ~ metal or something or other.

CoC are more metal than what it sounded like you wanted, yeah, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. Halfway to Gone might be closer.
Assuming you've downloaded some of their later stuff though, is that the kind of sound you were getting at with "American"?

Is Frances the Mute worth the money? I mean I heard some pretty different comments about it. I loved De-loused and also the single from Fances, The Widow. Some say that thereīs a lot of weird noise through the album, and that this is kinda bitching. But others say that the songs are great, with a latin vibe to it and also a great guitar work by Omar and John. So, is Frances "that good" or "that bad"?
3rdplanet

Okay guys, which Judas Priest album should I buy, and why?(ok, you don't have to explain why). Either:
Screaming for Vengeance
Sad Wings of Destiny
Painkiller
Thanks.
I would say Painkiller AND I will explain.
Almost every song is awesome, the drumming is amazing, the vocals are different, so if you're used to Breaking the Law, it may be wierd, but again, awesome. Solos and riffs are amazing.
After that, I would say SFV because it's one of their defining moments.

Funny, I've tried burning my own compilation of Disposition-like songs. I really like the song but I've never heard any song very similar to it. Instead I included a lot of "relaxing" music that are mostly instrumental and that have similarity in Disposition's "Mood". It included : Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky and Air.
Here are a few tracks from the CD:
Mogwai - Close Encounters
Mogwai - Kappa
Mogwai - Burn Girl Prom Queen
Sigur Ros - Njosnavelin
Explosions in the SKy - Only Moment We Were Alone
Air - Playground Love
Air - Alone in Kyoto
Disposition included of course.
I listen to it mostly when I'm doing my homework. Give it a try.

Well as you know Rush are Rush.
My friend sent me some Superior so I have no albums by them yet, but from what I have heard they sit of the gap between Power and Prog metal, 'Why' by them has the most beautiful piano I have heard.
Threshold are much more metal. Lot's of Synth.
The Overhead are more ambient moments if that's your sort of thing, if you like Porcupine Tree you maybe a fan.
Camel have quite a bizarre sound, hard to describe, but I'm sure prog archives will help, they have a few free downloads on their site.
Those last two don't have much of a metal sound to them, but they are still worth listening to if you do like Rush.
Other names to look out for are;
Ayeron
Fate's Warning
Liquid Tension Experiment
Yes
Without Face
...and many many more, I could probably go on all day about it.

What is "shifting" may I ask?
Also are you looking for songs that you can transcribe your self by ear, or songs that have sheet music already made for them? Because my suggestions most likely will not have sheet music for them.
Also some rock and metal songs with Violins in them :
Arcturus - Ad Astra
Winds - Theory Of Relativity, What is Beauty, The Fireworks of Genesis, A Moment for Reflection...(or pretty much any Winds songs, since they have alot of violin/piano work in their songs)
Sinergy - Born Unto Fire and Passion (great insturmental piece, I highly recommend it. Violin and classical guitar are the biggest pieces to this song)
Haggard - Requiem in D - Minor, Cantus Firmus In A-Minor, Saltorella La Manuelina, Gavotta In Si-Minore...(those are all great insturmentals done by the band. They are really a metal band fused with classical elements, and have around 20 people in the band, but those are their straight up classical insturmentals with good violin work in them)

Manowar, Megadeth, Liquid Tension Experiment, Extreme, Ugly Kid Joe, Symphony X.

Yep. Also Saxon (and maybe Sonata Arctica, Tad Morose, 3 Inches of Blood..power metal in general might be worth exploring).

I'm looking to get into some Kreator. Can someone give a best album to check out please? Also any recommendations on other good old school thrash (other than Slayer, Metallica, and Megadeth) would be much appreciated.

Kk, here we go - I'm looking for intense, atmospheric music. Like, Orchastral sections/strings and keyboards, mixed with distorted guitars and drums. Apocalyptica (distorted cellos =p), After Forever, Kalmah, Eternal Tears of sorrow, stuff like that. So like, classical influences mab?
DVG.

Symphony X should be right up your alley. Check out their Odyssey album. The title track alone is worth the price. Also, you may like Therion and Skyfire.

Therion, what a band.
Also can someone suggest some bands with good slide guitarists?
Ry Cooder, Muddy Waters, and of course, Robert Johnson.
Ben Harper does some slide stuff too, doesn't he? Never actually listened to him though.

Yea, he does. If you're looking for Ben Harper stuff try getting his Live from Mars album as I feel his studio work really pales in comparison.

Yeah, I'd agree very much there.
My flatmate sometimes insists that Stealer's Wheel have been the only band to use a slide without making him want to kill someone, yet he loves Ben Harper.

Okay, I have a few requests:
What are some great Steve Vai or Joe Satriani songs?
What are some good classical songs?
Also, I'm wanting to get into some more Death Metal. I love the band Death, because they have great musicians, and awesome vocals. What are some awesome Death Metal bands, that don't have Mono-tone(cannibal corpse) vocals, and are very good?
Thanks

I'm no expert on either, but for Steve Vai, try "For the Love of God".

Athiest and Cynic are for you :thumb:. Mithras as well, although they sound much different than Athiest and Cynic.
I would also suggest Lykathe Aflame, but the vocals are very low, so you may not like it. The plus side to it would be the outstanding musicianship, songwritting and melody.

Vai: For the love of god, the audience is listening, yai yai, the attitude song, erotic nightmare
Classical composers: John Williams, Beethoven, Mozart, Paganini. Typing these names into a P2P program should bring forth their most known/sometimes best songs.
You may also like to check out The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, who incroporate classical elements into rock songs, and Haggard who blend classical music with metal.

Could only really be called "experimental". Try checking them out though, most of what they've done is good so far.

Two more things:
What are some good The Mars Volta songs, what CD of them do you reccomend, and what genre would you classify them as?
Also, what would you say is the best Meshuggah Cd? I have "Nothing", and while its good, I've heard that it's crap compared to their others.

They are classed as prog rock but I don't know if I agree with that.
Eriatarka and Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt are two of their best tracks I feel, and De-Loused in the Comatorium is the Stronger album.

Well, seeing as you like a lot of prog stuff I'd say check out Symphony X and Dream Theater. Both are progressive, melodic, and show exquisite musicianship.

Yeah, thanks for the recommendation...but that's the thing... I find most of those "prog bands" eg Dream Theater, Symphony X etc to be too pretentious and tacky... Also, I don't like the excessive showmanship.
I like bands like Opeth, Isis, and Tool because they are melodic, creative, and progressive without feeling the need to show off their technical skills. And also, they have some really cool riffs.....
