Hey,
I just need help to discover new stuff. I'm fed up of the bands i'm listening to now and searching for new bands. My only restrictions are:
1.It has to be metal
2.It has to be very technical/complex
I also like progrsive **** a lot, for exemple Opeth.
Anyway, thanks for your help.
*Note : i posted this in the Rock/Metal forum not knowing their already had a thread for this going.
Dream Theater for progressive and technical, Meshuggah would also fulfill your requirements.

Hmmm, Cryptopsy may be a bit extreme if you're a relative beginner. Try some Obituary. Anything off there first 2 albums is great, but in particular...
Chopped In Half
Find The Arise
Circle of the Tyrants (Although, it is a cover)
Gates of Hell
Slowly We Rot
Cause of Death
Infected
'Til Death

John Tardy is a definate RRRRAAAAWWRRRRRR vocalist, as you put it.

If you like those songs definitely get D*mnation.
Although that album only really shows one side of their musical stylings.
Blackwater Park and Still Life have a good mix I feel, although still with less acousticy stuff than the metally stuff.

Deadwing is out very soon (in Europe) and I'm guessing it will sound pretty similar to In Absentia as it's the follow up album, so you could wait for that.

Ok, someone reccomend me some Genesis songs. I've only heard "Land of Confusion" and I like it a lot, are there any other songs by them that kinda have the same feel?
Anyone?
Some Genesis songs from the old parents collection:
No Son Of Mine
Jesus He Knows Me
I Can't Dance
Tonight, Tonight, Tonight
Invisible Touch
All good songs somewhat similar to Land of Confusion
Would someone reccomend me some sweet black metal?

Try some (earlier) stuff by Metallica and Megadeth. They're heavy, but not that heavy. For some rock stuff try Extreme, Aerosmith, Guns N roses, Alice In Chains, Down, Audioslave, Rage Aainst The Machine (though the vocals for them are heavily rap influenced).
Metallica: Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, Load, Re-Load
Megadeth: Cryptic Writings, Risk, Peace Sells...But who's buying?
Extreme: Extreme II:Pornografitti, Extreme I
Aerosmtih: Toys in the Attic
Guns N roses: Appetite for destruction, Use your illusions I + II
Alice in Chains: Dirt,
Down: Nola
Audioslave: Audioslave
RATM: Rage Against The Machine, Battle of L.A

If you like the complex rhythms and time signature changes, you may like Meshuggah. I suggest you sample them before buying though.
You may also like Dream theater, who are a prog rock/metal band, with complex music and are extremely technical.
A perfect Circle are also an option. They're like Tool but less technical and have a softer sound, and also feature the same singer.
Randomly; You may also like Nine Inch Nails who are one of the most popular industrial bands.
Again, try sampling all of these bands before buying to see which ones you like/dislike.

That all depends on what you like Megadeth for, their Thrash, Metal, or Alternative sound.
Thrash sound: Killing is My Business....And Business is good, Rust In Peace, Peace Sells...But Who's buying? So Far, So Good,...So what?
Metal: The World Needs a Hero, The System has Failed
Alternative: Crytpic Writings, Risk
Ones in italics are their best from each era (in my opinion)

Maiden - Try Number of the Beast, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son or Dance of Death. Or Piece of Time. Or..
My only other advice there would be to forget the Sex Pistols, and listen to more worthwhile punk. Listen to the album if you really want, I suppose, but unless you see it really cheap, I wouldn't bother actually buying it.

Immortal - At the Heart of Winter
Grand Belial's Key - Judeobeast Assassination
..both are riffier black metal, if you feel you'd prefer something meatier sounding than much black metal.
Otherwise, check out Burzum's early stuff (his later albums are all synth), Mayhem's earlier stuff (De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Live in Leipzig), Bathory (one of the starting bands for the genre; earliest stuff is really just thrash, starting to lean towards what would become the black metal style, but check them out anyway). Ask in the death heads for more sophisticated answers.

I'd personally say The Jester Race or Lunar Strain.
Lunar Strain is more death like melodic death, which I prefer, but overall I'd say TJR, especially if you're just getting into them.

Ok, I just discovered this thread in the most ironic way ever. Creating a thread asking for good music by Symphony X, I commented on how all threads are being simplified with "official ___ thread" etc. First post, "Official Reccommendation Thread". That was sorta funny for me, the most I thought was that there might be some official symphony X thread floating around or a thread already discussing which songs of theirs is good.
But regardless, does anyone know any good Symphony X songs to the effect of Candlelight Fantasia, Sea of Lies and Smoke and Mirrors etc. Thanks

They're being simplified because it's irritating to see five threads asking about the same band. They were created for a reason... and if you call your own idiocy ironic, then that's fine. The search function works for a reason. Use it next time. Besides, Symphony X don't get discussed enough to warrant an official thread.
As for your question, V: The New Mythology Suite is a worthwhile album.

Evolution is a great song, one of my favourites by Symphony X and is probably one of their heaviest. Excluding the songs you Mentioned, some songs to check out are :-
>Fallen(from V, as Anti-Hero said, really worthwhile and IMO an amazing album.)
>Masquerade (Very baroque intro, which is really quite funny at first.)

Black metal is a genre that hardly has any bass, so if that is something you are looking for in black metal it will probably not be something you will like.
Either you have to have it grow on you, or not listen to it at all.
G_Mac07
04-04-2005, 11:39 PM
Yeah I'd been reading that one of the characteristics of the genre was the lack of bass. I was just hoping there might be something with a bit more in the lower ranges, just to break myself into the genre a little easier. Thanks anyway.

I'll recommend some stuff for you two later, for now I am going to play a game.
I shall recommend some stuff then.
Melechesh - Djinn. Amazing album, by an amazing band. Great Black Metal, with a middle-eastern feel. More melodic, if you want a softer way into the genre.
Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky. Possibly the quintessential black metal album, very good atmosphere.
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Santhanas. One of my favourite albums. Very atmospheric, but the singing may annoy some.
Burzum - Det Som Engang Var. A very good start, if you are looking for musically beautiful black metal.
Gorgoroth - Pentagram. Perhaps not the best band, but I like them. :)
Hope that goes well for now.

InMe....eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewww. Don't enjoy yourcodenameis:milo either.
Will try Kinesis though.
EDIT: Oh dear Lord Kinesis are rubbish. Their drummer needs a slap. No offence.
I don't like YCNI:M or InMe either. Just going by the tastes of my Biffy-loving friends.
What Kinesis track(s) did you get?

For whoever wanted the Nirvana suggestion, I am a much bigger fan of "Bleach", their first album, than all of their others. I think it is pretty good.

I'm looking to get more into black metal. I haven't heard much at all so far, and the bass seems to be a lot less prominent for me to really like it. So, can someone recommend me some black metal bands that are fairly prominent in the bottom end? thanks in advance.
Black metal in which you can actually hear the bass, and it's not just copying the guitar:
Watain
Leviathan(IMO some of, if not the best and most atmospheric black metal ever created.)

Hey guys, can anyone recommend me some metal bands that don't have much screaming or growling?
I like bands like, Masterplan, Edguy, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Dream Evil, Dio, Helloween, Stratovarius, Dragonforce, Firewind, Hammerfall...
Any more bands like these would be great. Thanks a ton.

Can somebody suggest me what Dream Theater album to buy?
I was thinking of getting Train of Thought or Awake, but any suggestion is good. If you have the chance, plaese explain why I should get that album.
Thanks!

Images and Words seems to be many peoples favourites, although I started with ToT and thought it was brilliant. Awake or Scenes From A Memory wouldn't be bad choices either, but I&W is what I'm recommending you.
Thanks for all the black metal stuff to guys. :thumb:

I wasn't going to make a new thread to ask this, and I figured here would probably be the next best place to ask. If it's not, ignore this post. Anyway, would some be kind enough to upload a song each by Emporer, Leviathan and Mayhem. I'm looking at getting into these bands and don't use a p2p.

Hey guys I'm back and I'm here with another "this or that" question
I want to buy a Judas Priest and an Iron Maiden CD but I don't know which one to buy first
As for Priest: I was thinking either Painkiller or British Steel
As for Maiden: I was thinking Killers or Fear of the Dark
Anyone have any suggestions which one I need to get first to start my collection?
Priest - Painkiller
Maiden - Killers
For Iron Maiden, you should definitely get Killers.
For Priest, either is good, but I prefer British Steel.

What would people say is the best Zappa album? I have a lot of Mp3s of his stuff but I want to go and buy an album.
Oh and The DEPs best work.
And I would say Painkiller.

I'm not sure what the BEST Zappa album is...but you should try out We're Only In it For the MOney for when he was with the Mothers. If you want some more accessible stuff then try out Over-nite Sensation.
By DEP you mean Dillinger Escape Plan right? Well thats what I'm assuming. In that case Calculating Infinity i think is their best. But Miss Machine is really good to.

queensryche added to what bartender suggested.
for zappa, try hot rats. its pretty accessible. either that or apostrophe.
also, try dillinger escape plans ep with mike patton, Irony is a Dead Scene.

Freak Out! is the only one I can personally recommend in full, but it's excellent. What I've heard of Hot Rats is good though, and it's supposed to be also excellent.
Oh and The DEPs best work.
My personal favourite (from what I've heard) is the Irony is a Dead Scene EP, but that's most probably because it's only an EP, and it has Mike Patton on vocals. As far as albums, I'd recommend Calculating Infinity over Miss Machine.

Cheers metalbassist777, PinkFreud and Bartender, you all recommended different stuff ( ) but I think I will try and check out Hot Rats first. Was thinking of getting Miss Machine because I love Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants (which isn't very representative of their work) but will consider the other ones.

Blind Guardian. You may also enjoy Children of Bodom.

Galloglass, Helloween, Dream Evil, Manowar and Rhapsody.
If you like Sinergy, you may enjoy Children of Bodom, which also features Laiho.
You may also like 3 Inches Of Blood, though they also have harsh vocals.

Does anyone know how long the God Forbid CD is? I've been thinking about buying it, but I don't want it to be on;y 30 minutes long.
What are some good Dillinger escape plan cds and opeth cds to buy?
Dillinger- I personally prefer Miss Machine to Calculating Infinity because it is much more diverse, while Infinity is pretty nonstop with the onslaught.
Opeth-All of them. Good starting place is Blackwater Park.
Anyone have an opinion on the best Thrice CD?
Probably the wrong forum for this, but at a guess (having heard very little of them) I would say The Artist in the Ambulance.
From Pink Floyd, would you reccomend Wish You Were Here or Animals? I cant decide.

Both are fantastic albums and each are worth owning.
I slightly prefer Animals, but there will be a lot of people telling you to get Wish You Were Here first, especially seeing as it has more shorter songs on it (if you exclued Shine On... )
I'm interested in finding some good Ambient/Darkwave/Industrial music, similar to stuff like Puissance. Anyone have any reccommendations?
