not just recommending whatever music you like!

I'm looking for some good instrumentals by metal bands. I've already heard all Metallica instrumentals, so anything other than those would be good.
Arch Enemy - Hydra
Arch Enemy - Snow Bound
In Flames - Wayfaerer
Iron Maiden - Losfer Words (Big 'Orra)

the other guys covered it pretty well.

So Burning Bridges > Black Earth?

I'm looking for some extreme symphonic metal in the vein of Emperor - Prometheus. I like that black metal sound but with tons of melody and occasional clean vocals. I hear Dimmu Borgir is a bit like that.

New stuff is like that, Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Death Cult Armageddon is like that.

Tvangeste doesn't have clean vocals like Emperor and Dimmu, but they are a great symphonic black metal band that gets no credit.

Bal Sagoth is more of an extreme form of symphonic epic metal, check them out.

Haggard is a very good band to check out if you want mideval type of sounding symphonic type of sound. They have alot of slower soft parts, but they have quite a bit metal kicking parts as well.

I have all Dimmu Borgir albums and one Tvangeste album if you want to get them from me on AIM or get samples or something.

Sweating Bullets... I don't think there's any rhythm part to the solos thats too interesting at least.

As far as bands, its tough to think of one. If I do I'll post it.

that depends as well. haha. crossroads is awesome, plenty of good electric blues, as well as some other genres thrown around in there. you get your virtuoso fill with vai and mclaughlin but you get clapton, buddy guy, hubert sumlin and many other blues greats. that would be my choice. but i already have it. so it would be repetitive...

I need various recommendations based on some of the things I have right now, which are:

Nile-In Their Darkened Shrines
Vehemence-God Was Created
Kataklysm-Shadows and Dust
Dimmu Borgir-Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia
The Black Dahlia Murder- Unhallowed
Dillinger Escape Plan-Miss Machine
In Flames-Soundtrack to Your Escape

Also, I used to own Morbid Angel-Covenant, but gave it away after first listen. Now I wish I hadn't.

I am going to check out Emperor, Amon Amarth, likythea aflame (sp), more In Flames, and I've also heard newer Kataklysm is good for being more melodic. Any other suggestions?

My Dying Bride, doom metal? I don't exactly know the definition of doom metal, but I'm not thinkin they are it.

Jom
03-02-2005, 11:26 AM
Doom metal is very slow, depressing death metal, basically. It tends to be very atmospheric and dark sounding. The vocals are the normal low, gutteral death vocals, but in a few of the bands I've heard, there's been a higher vocalist too.

Old Katatonia, old Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, and Shape Of Despair are good examples of doom metal... so to answer your question, MDB would fall under doom metal.

Bartender
03-02-2005, 11:32 AM
Sorry AH, but slowed down death metal (such as MDB, Paradise Lost, Katatonia) aren't really doom metal; they're just that, slowed down death metal. It often gets called doom/death, I think.

Pure doom metal is Jondur's domain, and is basically a direct descendant of Black Sabbath. The vocals are usually clean and actually sung, and it's basically a much heavier, louder, and often more theatrical (and slower) extension of traditional heavy metal. Bands to look into; Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Solstice, St Vitus, Trouble, The River, Reverend Bizarre, Thee Plague of Gentlemen.

(some of those I've actually heard, some I'm just taking on Jondur's word)

Sorry for posting in the middle of a genre debate, but I have some recommendation requests.

I have Dream Theater's "Train of Thought", "Images and Words", and "Scenes from a Memory" (I also have the Live at Budokan DVD, and Liquid Tension's first album), and I am hoping to buy another album, which one album should I get next? Am I missing out on a classic?

Also, on a similar, progressive theme, I'm starting to like Symphony X, which album is best to buy first, to get me a real taste of the band?

And lastly, a first Helloween album, I like what I've downloaded, and would like to buy an album, and possibly build upon that.

Thanks a lot, I'll be happy if you can answer at least one of my questions.

I need some recommendations. This is the music genre styles I'm looking for;

Rock and Roll/Classic Rock; I'm talking AC/DC style here. Also, wouldn't mind some classic rock bands, but I do know a hell of a lot of classic rock bands, so I'll have to say wether I've got many songs by them or not.

Funk; A really good funk band wouldn't go a miss...

If you have no recommendations, leave the person alone, alright?

And for the 32109875482 time, this thread is about awnsering questions, not just saying a list of albums/bands to listen to. That is accepted, if it is something that is well thought out and said and informative to give the person some incentive to actually check out the music...

I recommend Awake too, and The Dark Ride for Helloween, got no Symphony X suggestions sorry.

Been listening to Be by Pain of Salvation all day today and I love the piano in it.

Does anybody have any recommendations for similar stuff?

Some one has got to know some kick as piano/metal with a prog tinge?

If you're looking for AC/DC style rock and roll, check out Young Heart Attack. They're a young band, only have one album out to my knowledge (Mouthful of Love), but it's fantastic. The male vocalist (they have a male and a female vocalist, and the interplay between them is one of the highlights) seems to be trying to be both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson simultaneously. There's a track which steals part of a Who song, I think, and a cover of an MC5 song. Excellent live, too.

Now, after cruising this forum for a couple weeks I really want to hear some more black metal. The only background i have in black metal is old mans child, old dimmu borgir, some "Filsofem" Burzum songs, and (not saying they ARE black metal for anyone who would like to tell me otherwise) Cradle of Filth. If anyone could make any reccomendations, especially particular albums and songs, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The Amazing Verticalville – Totally awesome. First off they have no vocals. This may sound kind of shocking, but it works so well. It's basically Guitars, fast fast drums, and a little bit of synth. Without vocals they compensate by playing really **** fine melodic guitar. It's just all over the place and hyperactive as hell at times, but their selftitled album does have some more lulled parts. It's very experimental and somwhat prog, but their experimentation doesn't overtake their creativity and sound.

I encourage anyone to try and hunt this album down. I think there are some websites you can order it from. Personally I would have never found out about them if my friend (his friend knows the band) hadn't showed me their CD. There really isn't a good band I can compare them to; thy just have such a sound that's all their own. I so desperately want to hear others opinions on this CD. I'd be willing to share this CD on AIM or just give some songs away. The entire album is only 9 tracks and under 40 minutes long.

AIM: samtheruntkake

Edit: I've just been informed that they sound similar to Hella.

Classic Rock
Alt. Rock

Blues
Jazz

Thank you in advance.

Bartender
03-13-2005, 11:03 AM
Well I don't know which albums you already own, or what you necessarily mean by the genres you give, but;

Alt. Rock:
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual
Faith No More - Angel Dust
Faith No More - King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime
Faith No More - Album of the Year
Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de Melody Nelson
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
The Polyphonic Spree - Together We're Heavy
Technically not alt. rock, but similar sound;
Talking Heads - More Songs About Buildings and Food
Gang of Four - Solid Gold
Interpol - Antics

Blues:
Skip James - just investigate him generally. Most of his stuff recorded in the 30s, so sound quality can be pretty bad. Great music, though.
Muddy Waters
Actually, seriously consider the Blues Brothers (the film). Watch it, maybe buy the soundtrack, and investigate. Lots of excellent stuff there, of blues and related genres.

Jazz:
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (/cliche)
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way (for fusion)
Yusef Lateef - The Blue Yusef Lateef (a bluesy jazz album)
If you like piano particularly, check out Chick Corea/Return to Forever, particularly the album Return to Forever.
Others will be able to recommend you more jazz than I, though.

You may well own these already, though.

I've been listening to alot of Death and Black Metal lately, and I thought it would be good to broaden my taste by listening to some more jazz. (I also want to study percussion in college, and you need to know jazz to get in) What would you people suggest? I'm open to most styles of jazz.
Also, what would be some bands similar to Vader? I have been enjoying them greatly, with the exception of the vocals.

Well, see my above post for some suggestions. I don't own many jazz albums, but I've not yet been disappointed by any of those I have bought. Well, I suppose I am potentially disappointed with Jaco Patorius' self titled, as I haven't give it a proper listen yet.

Can anyone recommend me some of their albums or any good songs in particular. I mostly like songs in the instrumental side especially guitarwise but I'm open to any other of their songs that sound good. Thanks for the help.

I want to clarify for this poster: he's referring to Evergrey.

I bought 8 albums in that sale. 'Album of the Year' was one of the ones I picked up.

Dream Theater are kinda the obvious recommendation.
They have pianoesque moments, although alot of it is basically just keyboard shred now. Their earlier stuff with Moore was alot more restrained I feel.
I'll see if I can come up with anymore.

Firstly, should I pick up None So Vile by Crytopsy or Chaosphere by Meshuggah?

Secondly, I'm currently getting into Arcturus and Ulver so an album recommendation for them would also be nice. I already have The Sham Mirrors on order, so no need to suggest that.

Get None So Vile, you will never regret it.

And for Arcturus, get La Masquerade Infernale, just a purely brilliant album.

As for Ulver...it all depends on what you want out of them. They have changed from folk, to folkish black metal to trip hop to electronica, so it depends on what you want out of them.

Run through a lot of Middle-Late Radiohead. Tracks like "Pyramid Song", "How to Disappear Completely" can be rather creepy, and tracks like "Climbing up the Walls" is downright scary. I don't know if any of this is what you're looking for.

Oh, and look up a lot of Classical and Modern Classical music. Impressionist era Classical would probably have something of what you're looking for - just read the title, and the piece will probably reflect the mood or scenario suggested by the title.

You've gotten some bad information under your post.

Live After Death and Rock In Rio are both excellent Live albums.

The best Greatest hits to get is probably Best Of The Best, when it comes to song quantity (it's two discs).

If you want some good old fashioned metal, try Iron Maiden, Killers, Number Of The Beast, Piece Of Mind or Powerslave.

A more melodic version of Maiden is Somewhere In Time, and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, which is even more of a departure.

From then on (No Prayer For The Dying, Fear Of The Dark, Virtual XI, or X Factor) they play a more aggressive, simpler version of Maiden's original style, and then return to full glory with Brave New World and Dance Of Death, both of which feature the 'classic' Maiden line-up plus Janick Gers.

Check out Porno For Pyros (Perry Farrell's project after Jane's), if you haven't already. They have two albums, both of which are good, but not amazing. Worth checking out if you're a Jane's fan though.

Other than that, check out both boyhitscar and Anyone's self-titled albums. Both rather Jane's-like in certain ways. I can upload some tracks for you to check out, if you'd like.

Sure that'd be great. I love P4P already!

Okay, here's a few tracks uploaded;

Porno for Pyros - 100 Ways (http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2H4VKHJRAJ43E03XKN1XX3SP92)
Porno for Pyros - Tahitian Moon (http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0GWTHMTEUOGD40RZ7ETWLLKRFO)

First, a couple of tracks actually involving Perry Farrell. This is his post-Jane's project, Porno for Pyros. I never really got into them that much (despite loving Jane's), but I have both of their albums anyway. These two tracks are both from their second album, Good God's Urge, which is somewhat better than the first, self-titled one.

boyhitscar - Lovecore (Welcome to) (http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0WIRDL5V27PV602GKETF3A7D9Y)
boyhitscar - As I watch the Sun F*ck the Ocean (http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3FO1HDA6XOUPN1UUM6OJBM3MCF)

boyhitscar are a kind of alt. rock band. They only have one album that I know of, their self-titled one, from which both of these tracks come; after that, they've been having troubles with bassists and drummers I think, so they haven't been able to record a follow-up. Anyway, I always associate them very closely with Jane's Addiction. The shout of "three, four!" at the start of As I Watch the Sun **** the Ocean might as well be a Perry Farrell sample, but the vocalist doesn't often imitate him.

Anyone - Don't Wake Me (http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=10BYOEYPTUODV3V3WY9U60LG1V)
Anyone - Kissing God (http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=24YECI85A4XEC1S359B4DLW5XK)

These last two tracks are by Anyone. They're a much more obviously "psychedelic" band - they used to hold huge free concerts, with free drugs for all who came, in big warehouses - and occasionally they sound a little gimmicky, but there's some good stuff on their album, which again is self-titled. I think it's their only release, apart from a self-released live album from the warehouse drug-festival days, which I don't have.

Hope you like something here, and I hope someone else downloads them too, so all this doesn't go to waste.

Parabol/Parabola

For something heavy, download Ticks and Leeches

For just straight Tool greatness:
Lateralus
Third Eye
Forty Six and Two
Eulogy
