For Meddle-era Pink Floyd, you can't go past Mike Oldfield and Kitaro.

I wouldn't call Common underground, or particularly good, but those are some good ones. I'd add Hilltop Hoods (http://sputnikmusic.com/band/Hilltop+Hoods) to the list, there's a bunch of mp3s to sample there.

I didn't really like the Hilltop Hoods, and I'm gonna definatley check out Non Phixion.

I really really love Atmosphere's old album, Overcast. Songs like "Scapegoat" and "Adjust" are just amazing. Anybody heard anything similar to that?

Also, I want to get more into Electronica/Trance/Techno or whatever you would call it. All I have is an Infected Mushroom album.

Lastly, has anyone ever heard of Dj Krush or The Album Leaf? What genre are they and what are some similar bands?

Thanks :)

Recommend me some strong, serious, sad Emo/rock/hard rock songs that are just achingly beautiful...songs that really 'get you everytime', pull on your heartstrings, gives you chills...and what not.

Anyone know what the eff I'm talking about...

John Lennon - Jealous Guy
Elliott Smith - The Biggest Lie
Elliott Smith - Needle In The Hay

Try:

Pendulum, Aphex Twin, Juno Reactor, Squarepusher DJ Scott Brown, Paul Van Dyk, Shape Shifters and DJ Tiësto.

Oh and Boards of Canada as well.

Oh oh, and Daft Punk. Can't believe I forgot them :(

For run of the mill dance stuff, if you want it, try DJ Sammy, Alice Deejay, Faithless, Michael Gray and Angel City.

Unkle might be worth a shot as well. Edit music for a film and/or Bonus material edit are both awesome and worth a shot. Despite being roughly an hour long each.

Oh yeah, and Goldfrapp.

...And maybes E Nomine as well.

That should probably keep you going for a while.

It is HARD to match Karnivool.

But I'd recommend:

Spiritual Beggars
Pain of Salvation
Muse
Ozric Tentacles
Neurosis
Sonic Youth
The Sword
newer Vintersorg

Again, none of this really sound a LOT like Karnivool. But they're similar to a point.

Opeth:

The Leper Affinity
Bleak
Master's Apprentices
By The Pain I See In Others

Have you tried Audioslave? Soundgarden? They are good bands.

Give these songs a try:

Soundgarden - Rusty Cage
Alice In Chains - Them Bones, Rooster
Stone Temple Pilots - Plush
Some early Silverchair might be suited as well. Get songs like Tomorrow, Findaway, Suicidal Dream, Pop Song For Us Rejects and Ana's Song.

I'm after some songs with those fat one chord chugga chugga bits eg Tool - Jambi @ 3:57, Tool - Eulogy ending, Eluveitie - The Song Of Life @ 2:47.
I know it will cut out a lot of stuff, but I don't want hardcore music.

Okies, suggest some metal'ish bands that I will like, taking into account I already like...

Agalloch
Opeth
Dream Theater
Porcupine Tree
Nevermore
NIN
Pain Of Salvation
Tool

Preferably not any prog-metal, I've explored most of that area really. Stuff with riffs = good but preferably not crazily metally.

You get the picture.

Most of 'em swing that way with their music, but erm, you could always try out Hendrix, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Rush, The Who, Clapton's solo stuff, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc to get you started, those are generally all the big names. Cool, cool. All of his recent stuff is pretty chill but SG is the best.

maudlin of the Well's Interludes (the four of them).

I can't find any Maudlin of the well, i've heard of them before though.

I should really get something better than Limewire.

bump

just listened to "Wastefall - Soulrain 21" and the band is fantastic. can you recommend me more progressive metal in this direction?!
What i like so far:
Dream Theater - Images and Words (the only hard album by them - great riffs)
and this Wastefall album, on some songs the riffs are so nice heavy :)

what i want to have is hard (!) progressive metal; i would prefer normal singing instead of growls (like in opeth - i know them and i love them); and nice time signatures and rhythms... - something like meshuggah ^^

i once tried Pain of Salvation and never like them....

well, i know i am a Dream Theater whore, but i would recommend Scenes From a Memory if you haven't already checked it out. 'harder' that Images and Words, and follows on from Metropolis part 1.

Symphony X are another great prog metal band. check out 'Divine Wings of Tragedy' or 'The Odyssey'.

i could hook you up with one or two sample track if you like :)

Seer's Tear - Precious is a fantastic album in that kind of vein (I think, it's not my area).

Subterranean Masquerade are one of the few interesting Progressive Metal bands I've heard in a while, but based on what you listen to I dont think you'd like them. There are some growls too, I guess.

I gather that you're looking for the progressive metal "sound", rather than bands with actual progressive tendencies. Let me see what I can dig up:

Dead Soul Tribe - The January Tree
Adagio (Fre)
Andromeda (Sweden, the band that did "Chimera")
Power of Omens - Rooms Of Anguish
Circus Maximus - The 1st Chapter

Don't hold me to these though, this isn't a sound I really enjoy.

Circus Maximus is fairly standard prog/power fare, if I remember correctly. Bit like Pagan's Mind.

Hi can I get some bands like The Notwist or Minotaur Shock? Nice indie electronic stuff.

A separate request: A really good industrial metal album that isn't Godflesh or Fear Factory (or Rammstein or Suicide Commando)

For a great Black Metal turned Industrial Metal band/album, you can't go past: Samael - Reign Of Light.

Ram-Zet is kinda cool, I think. I don't listen to much industrial.

silly video but in the middle starts a very disctinctive piece which was fairly popular a while back and had a cool video clip with blue anime characters. Can you tell me who the artist is? Thanks :)

If you like the videos for Aerodynamic and One More Time and so on, you should see the full film.

Is it an anime the band made or they just used parts of an independent anime to make video clips?

Made by the band, along with a Japanese film company, after the album was already done (though the album was written with storylined video in mind). It's called Interstella 5555.

you don't know nights in white satin?

Stoic

So this is Nights In White Satin by The Moody Blues. No I'm afraid I'm not familiar with it at all and I bet it's not the only classic track I have no idea about. This is because I rarely watched TV or listened to the radio as kid, plus such music doesn't get much airplay in Greece :)
