I'm looking for some Folk-Metal. I've recently gotten into Skyclad (Folkemon) and Korpiklaani (Spirit of the Forest), so any suggestions are appreciated. They can be more folk or more metal based, so there's no real grounds to go on.

I was told to post this here
I have started to grow sick of music that lacks great instrumental skill. For the past few days I have been listening to Dream Theater mostly. They are one of my favorite bands. I really enjoy almost all of their work. So judging by the fact that I like progressive music (rock and classical mostly) and all. Please recommend me some bands that would fit into my likings. I am listening to Dragonforce right now and giving them a shot. Oh and I prefer music that has lyrics, but I also appreciate a good instrumental now and then. Any musical suggestions are appreciated.
If you haven't already investigated Symphony X, do it now. Otherwise, I don't have much else to recommend you that will excite you, judging by what you have already said.
How do you feel about harsh vocals? Some good Tech Death might take you fancy if your into that kind of thing.
Hmmm...let's see. Try some:
Planet X
Andromeda
Bozzio Levin Stevens
Pain Of Salvation
Gordian Knot (Instrumental)

I did last night and I like them a lot. Great band.
Harsh vocals are okay, but I prefer clean. I listened to some Opeth last night and they sound like they take some listening to actually like. I'm sure they will grow on me.

Alarum is the next best bet.
Coprofago are like a mix of Meshuggah and Atheist, but their name is pretty silly. You could also try out Yakuza; they're a Hardcore/Metalcore group with free-jazz sax parts. Miles Daviscore, I guess you could call it, hah.

The only band that I can recommend that's anything like Opeth would be Woods Of Ypres. Though I'm not a huge Opeth fan, I will say not many bands sound at all like them. Even Woods is VERY different, but if you like Opeth you should like them.

I just want some soft slow songs. Kinda like Nickelbacks Hero or something. Just in the mood for those types of songs.
Sleepy
05-17-2006, 07:01 PM
Slow?
Then you want more recent Katatonia, Anathema, Agalloch, November's Doom (slow but heavy), Pelican, and The Devin Townsend Band.
Devy is great when you need a break from typical metal.
Shattered_Future
05-17-2006, 07:02 PM
Yea, but Devy's not acoustic in any sense of the word. Happy/uplifting, yes, but he's still mad heavy.
Slow soft songs? Even though she's not really like Opeth in any way, Tori Amos is always good for some great chill music.

Tommy Lee's solo stuff is all pretty mid-tempo and mainstream rock-y. I'm not sure what relation it bears to Opeth though. Actually I'm not sure what Nickelback and Opeth have in common at all, even when they do acoustic numbers.

(Time to throw out my obligatory folk/viking recommendations)
Try Ulver's Kveldssanger or Empyrium's Where At Night The Wood Grousse Plays. Both are completely acoustic, and soothing and beautiful as hell.

Haha, like I said, I keep an open mind. The only song I know by them is Raining Blood, and it's so cool, I just have to listen to it. I edited it out though, since if that's the only song I know by them, I'm not really a true fan.
I'm not like one of these crazy "metal is evil" types, I'll even listen to songs that question religion, like Eulogy by Tool. I just figured since a lot of black metal bands are against Christianity it would be tough for me to get into, you know? I just said black metal as an example. I even listened to some black metal bands that I hear talked about on mx, like Burzum, Immortal, etc. It's just that in metal, especially more extreme metal, that's what a lot of the bands think, and it would probably be tough for me to get into that stuff since it attacks my beliefs.

I find Gorod to be a pretty good band - I love the vocals too.
Aside from the tech/prog death metal bands that have been mentioned I also like Quo Vadis, Opeth and Akercocke.
Add Novembre into that list and it's killer.

Try Porcupine Tree. It's more progressive and not exactly the same, but you should like them if you like Dredg.

Beneath The Massacre is horrible. Their songs have some crazy awesome technical elements in them, but the band needs to learn how to write better. They rely on C chords and breakdowns a bit too much...

OK, I would like to hear some quality metal.
I am a metal noob, and would like to expand my musical horizons.
I don't really care about what metal sub-genres anyone suggests but look at my 'likes' so far. Some bands I will mention aren't specifically metal, however, you can get a gist of what I'm more suited to at the moment.
Likes: Opeth, Tool, Porcupine Tree, In Flames, Dark Tranquility(somewhat), Mastodon, SiKth, Mr. Bungle, NIN, Alice In Chains, Faith No More, The Mars Volta.
I guess I would be looking at something very melodic and prog-like(for lack of a better term) from what I put down.. but any suggestions will be sincerely appreciated.
Ta.
EDIT: Oh yeah.. I don't mind growl and scream vocals so don't let that hinder suggestions.

5 minutes is definetely not long, but whatever... here we go:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Static (23:19)
(Pretty much anything else by GY!BE)
Sunn 0))) - Hallow Cave (21:58)
(Again, most of these dudes' songs exceed the 5 minute limit)
Agalloch - In the Shadow of our Pale Companion (14:45)
Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence (14:07)
Dream Theatre - The Glass Prison (13:52)
(Also most of DT's songs are over 5)
Helloween - Halloween (13:18)
...Thats good enough.
And Japan X - Art of Life
Forsure, an awesome song.

Nah. Necrophagist is technical death metal. Benighted is brutal death and aborted is brutal with some grindcore in it.
Those are still terrible grind reccomendations. If he asked for grind, then why don't you reccomend him something that is actually grind?
For grind, get Terrorizer and Repulsion, like Ar said. Top notch, especially repulsion. Vicious and thrashy.

I have apparently confuzzled the hell out of myself now. I swear when I read his question, he asked for tech/death/grind.
I read back now and it's what you said. Now I'm really confuzzled.

Infectious Grooves.
Hell yes. Robert Trujillo is such a bloody badass bassist with so much talent. I love Infectious Grooves.

2. Something with a lot of Groove (Both Metal and other)
The Beta Band. Not at all metal, but plenty of (slow, relaxed) groove.
