I've got a few Imperanon tracks. They're ok, they sound a bit thin to me and get a bit repetative. I think I've heard one Kalmah song, the one with sweeps in the beginning, repcak is/was learning it.

I love Norther, but to my tastes, think they just got worse with every album. Dreams of Endless War is one of my favorite albums ever, Mirror of Madness was pretty good, but didn't have that same atmosphere that DoEW had. As for Death Unlimited, I'm just not a fan. But to DuCran, get a few tracks from each album and see what fits your taste. I also have Imperanon's Stained album and enjoy a good number of tracks on it.

Hey, I'm looking for some progressive hard rock/metal bands to get into. I've been listening to Dream Theater a lot lately, which I like, but I'm looking for a band with less...excessive qualities. I love strong melodies and I want a band with clean vocals (no growling).

Some of my favorite bands are Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Deep Purple, and Judas Priest. I've heard a lot of the more famous progressive rock bands (King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd), so I'm looking for something a little less well known.

Any suggestions?

Porcupine Tree is a solid bet, I'd think from what you listed.

Jacaranda

Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! its from the 1969 2 night show at the Garden in NYC. Its their best live album and probably only one that non-hardcore fans will like. Other then Live Licks maybe which was recorded during the Licks World Tour so its older Stones.
On a side note you could just ask in CR thread if you ever need Stone recommendations!
On another note, the performances (or about 5-6) from Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! can been seen on the Gimme Shelter movie.

Hey, got a project and im having to make a mix cd of the music i've studied over the semester.

I have to use different genres, and i dont want to use the songs that we've studied in class, so I'm going to make a list of genres that I need to use, and you guys can give me your fave songs for the different genres!! Thanks if you guys feel like doing this, I have most of it covered but there's some types of music that i'm no expert on. I'll list most of the genres anyways cause i might change my mind if you bring up a good song.

To Add to this, in some of the genres I already know the artists, but why don't you guys suggest some good songs that I might use for them!

Genres:

Psychedelic Rock
Funk
Soul
Glam
Disco
Power pop
Early 70s Rock
Folk although im definitely choosing neil young so just give me a song
Early Punk
Metal (all subgenres too i guess lol)

As far as the bands i have going right now:

NoFX, Nirvana, The Beatles, Bob Marley, In Flames, gimme some songs that really represent these groups... their whole sound.

THanks if you guys feel like doing this.

Jacaranda

New York Dolls - Looking for a Kiss or Personality Crisis, Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes or Momma's Little Jewel, T. Rex - Bang a Gong (Get it On) or Mambo Sun, David Bowie - Rebel Rebel or Ziggy Stardust
Power pop:
Big Star - September Gurls, Cheap Trick - I Want You to Want Me,
Early Punk:
Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK, Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop, Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen In Love, The Clash - London Calling

I'm taking Early 70s Rock literally....
Rolling Stones - Bitch or Brown Sugar, The Guess Who - American Women, Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song or Rock and Roll, Velvet Underground - Rock & Roll, David Bowie - Changes, The Who - Baba O'Riley, Aerosmith - Dream On

The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter.

Rick James- Superfreak
Curtis Mayfield- Superfly

Greg, my boy, let's start with what you like.

I know you're not a stranger to electronica, so let's go for his newest album: Light + Shade, which is a very fine album.

For rock: Tubular Bells or Five Miles Out. For folk: Ommadawn or Hergest Ridge. For a rock/electronica blend: most of his other albums will suffice, but I recommend Tubular Bells III.

can some one say tome which is the best album of Eric Clapton?

Clapton's best solo album is Slowhand. But his work with Cream and other sideprojects in the late sixties and early seventies completely owns any of his solo work. Try a few of these:

Cream- Wheels of Fire (or any other Cream album)
John Mayall- Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton
Derek and the Dominoes- Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
Blind Faith- Blind Faith

Also there are a ton of live Cream/Clapton official live recordings and bootlegs out there and Cream is known as perhaps the greatest live band ever, so be sure to check out some live stuff.

There is a gap in my music listening era... I know 70s, then 90s and 00s... so... some relatively newer songs... I don't know about catchy but you should look into Thrice (not so much their newest album but some of their stuff has some pretty catchy songs)

Uh... trying to think of bands that you may not know (since I have no idea what you have or haven't heard...) get back to me on that.

Nevermore - Dead Heart In A Dead World

Arch Enemy - Stigmata

Dude above - I find songs from Lacuna Coil's Karmacode to be unbelievably catchy...but that came out a few weeks ago. :p

Some Maiden songs I find can get stuck in my head for days at a time. Try The Trooper, Hallowed Be Thy Name, or Aces High for memorable, catchy riffs.
no. first enemies of reality because its a more fast paced album which is a good start for a new NM fan. then get dead heart

run dont walk, on the second page of the R&M forum there is a NM thread. go into it and ask the NM fans there!

Which bodom album should I get next? (I already got Are you Dead Yet? and Follow The Reaper), also is Shadows Fall - The War Within worth it? or should I get Opeth's Deliverance instead

I made this recommendation in another thread but it is worth recommending again. Marty Casey and the Lovehammers have released their major label debut self-titled album. Check it out on their website www.lovehammers.com. (http://www.lovehammers.com) The Lovehammers spent years as an independant until Marty took a chance and went on Rock Star:INXS last summer. I know a reality show, yuck. But it was very well done and really showcased some talent. After coming in second him and his band signed with Epic and released their album. Probably way more than you wanted to hear. I think many will enjoy their music.

Hey, im looking to review Marc Rizzo's solo album Colossal Myopia, but I always like to get a little background into the bands/people im reviewing, so I'm wondering if anyone can point some three or four good/intresting Soulfly and Ill Nino songs - I've alreadt got my fair share of Sepultura. Much Appreciated!

I disagree - Shadows Fall isn't bad, but Deliverance is one damned fine album.

If it was Morning Rise or Still Life I'd be inclined to agree. Deliverance never sat well with me, that's all.

Ill Nino - How Can I Live, God Save Us, What Comes Around, Unreal

Soulfly - Eye For An Eye, No Hope = No Fear, No

Granted, I only have an album each by them, so I'm choosing my favorites from them.

I'm searching for new band to listen to but yesterday I went to the music store and listened to Shadows Fall wich I had heard good comments about. I really liked the instrumental but this kind of vocals(like talking/screaming) like Killswicth engage I really don't like them. So could you recommend me some good bands more like as i lay dying or trivium for this kind of metal?

i've been wondering about Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Celtic Frost, and Napalm Death.

i hate to be so general, but where's a good place to start with all of them?

Sleepy

Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant or Death Cult Armaggedon. I can't really recommend on the others seeing as I only have 1 CD by each.

Death Cult is technically their newest, they re-released an earlier album, Stormblast a little while ago.

However, it all depends on what you're looking for. Death Cult focuses more on symphonic elements while Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is more along the lines of pure Black Metal.

i heard about the re-release and was about to pick it up. since it's early, though, is the songwriting and whatnot up to par with newer stuff?

symphonic elements are actually what i was looking for. death cult it is.

though someone at amazon wrote this:
"Save your money and don't waste it on this satanic sacrificial swank. This isn't even metal to me. This is a bunch of witches performing witchcraft through a metal sound just to suck people into their foolish and disgusting cult."

hope this doesn't corrupt me... though all's im looking for is a musically-excellent album

Shattered_Future

I could care less about the lyrical content on DCA, but the fact of the matter is the music isn't much...

Unbelievable drums, some interesting orchestral stuff, and Vortex's vocals (the clean dude) and not much else.

I'd only begin to worry about that is you take everything that everyone says completely seriously. If you're thinking an album is going to burrow into your mind like a parasite and corrupt your morals, you probably have mental problems anyway.

The guy who wrote that review is probably a priest, or an extremely conservative father with 3 daughters.

They're not totally similar, but you'd probably like;
