Adagio would do it for you.

I need 1 band that sounds a lot like Symphony X, notice that I only need 1 band because it´s for a school project....I don´t really want to explain it but i only need 1 band.

Some Dream Theater could be compared to Symphony X

Well for In Flames check out their Whoracle and Colony era.....I don´t think you would like their new stuff that much but if you want to give it a shot then try Soundtrack To Your Escape which i wouldn´t really recommend.

For the Whoracle and Colony era check out:
Moonshield
December Flower
Jotun
Zombie Inc
Dialogue With The Stars
Episode 666
The Jester's Dance

well i am a big fan of opeth but they are the only death metal band that i like so far and i am interested in hearing more music like them, so what would be some good specific songs/albums/bands to check out?

Deth
02-06-2006, 07:30 PM
Death is probably the best band to start on. Symbolic, Individual Thought Patterns or The Sound Of Perseverance I would recommend as first albums from them.

Also, Bloodbath is a good one to start on, and the first album has Mikeal on it so you'll be used to the vocals already.

Txus
02-06-2006, 07:32 PM
Also if you want to check out a band similar to Opeth, check out Novembre and The Provenance.

Shattered_Future

Add to that list, Katatonia's album Brave Murder Day (Akefeldt did guest vocals on certain parts...older, Morningriseish style) and Novembers Doom.

alright thanks, ive actually heard a few death songs before before, and i will check out bloodbath, novembre, and the provenence :)

Shattered_Future

I've never heard of Dark Tranquillity being mentioned alongside Opeth (aside from the fact that they're touring together), but Dark Tranquillity is the single greatest Gothenburg metal band ever. Get Character, one of the best albums I've ever heard. You won't regret it.

A lot of that is gothenburg though.

If you're looking for less harsh stuff, gothenburg is probably your best bet, however.

If you don't care about harshness, a couple of my favorite melodic death bands (I'm really picky about it) are:

Carcass
Intestine Baalism
Eucharist
Autumn Leaves

Apocalyptic Raids

My favourite Melodic Death band is Arghoslent by far. Eucharist and Intestine Baalism are good too.

It's like treating Bay-Area thrash as something different to Thrash, when it shouldn't be.

Yeah that's ok, but I get annoyed when people call it 'Gothenburg Metal'. I would rather people just called it all Melodic Death though, since it seems some people just so that other people don't associate In Flames and the like with their precious "real" melodic death.

I still <3 you though orestes :P

So I am looking for some more power metal that isn't really cheesy.

So far the stuff I have liked the most is either really close to speed metal, like Jag Panzer, or is really epic without being extremely cheesy like Blind Guardian.

Dungeon. I think I've mentioned them to you before. All their albums are good, though I like A Rise To Power most.

Some good underground PM:
Avalanch
Dark Moor
Kamelot (Not that Underground but I think you haven´t heard them)
Pagans Mind (More prog than PM but still a great listen)
Luca Turilli
Sinergy
Rata Blanca
Warcry
Eidolon

Hey Txus, I'll check those bands out anyways, but are any of them like Elements Part 1 cheesy ? Because that kind of cheesiness doesnt apeal to me much.

It's like, I think, a bit of a clash of thrash/death/black metal, which for some reason has ended up being identified as Australian and Canadian War Metal. I'm pretty sure Deströyer 666 (Australian) and Axis of Advance (Canadian) are counted amongst the bands identified so, so you could check them out. Deströyer 666 in particular are quite enjoyable.

Don't take any of what I said as gospel, though. Ideally, you should ask Terminal Spirit.

So I am looking for some more power metal that isn't really cheesy.

So far the stuff I have liked the most is either really close to speed metal, like Jag Panzer, or is really epic without being extremely cheesy like Blind Guardian.

I can't stand some of the newer Power Metal stuff that is an absolute cheese-fest.

Suggestions?

Latest Angra (get Temple of Hate song) and early Helloween (get Ride the Sky song) come to my mind although I wouldnt exactly describe them as wankery. Still technical enough I think.

Neo-Classical + Power Metal

Requiem (Fin) might work although I doubt you'll find anything by them.

Zero Hour, maybe. Not insanely technical, not so fast either, but it's fun to play once you work out the multitudes of time sigs and riffs.

Also, (maybe there isn't) are there any prog or power bands that have good music but are suitable for lactose intolerant people (ie. NOT TOO CHEESY). eg I find Ayreon - Human Equation lyrics extremely cheesy, but Zero Hour - Towers Of Avarice is fine.

Definitely get their s/t debut first. That's their most essential album, their most popular, and is amazing even if it's not their best imo. It also has their most popular songs (The End, Light My Fire, and Break on Through) so it's a great introduction. But even if you don't like that, don't discount the Doors. Their first couple albums are heavily psychedelic but by the end of their career, their albums were pure blues-rock. I know some people who only like the early days and some people who only like the later days, so I'd give both a try. But the debut is definitely the best way to start. If you're looking for more, get Strange Days after their debut. It has a very similar sound and is just as good.

Kalmah and Norther aren't really Melodic Death Metal...they're more harsh power metal than anything.

Yeah, but there is at least a good chance that fans of it will like them.

If there are any other bands with similar styles you think I should check out, please say so. :)

Apocalyptic Raids

About Pestilence, if you're looking for techy stuff make sure you get the later material, particularly Spheres. The earlier albums are awesome, but not what you're looking for.

It's been a long time since I've been in the R&M forum...been spending my time in the bass forum. Anyway, just tonight I've gotten into Atreyu. What songs would anyone reccommend to download. I think I heard one of my friends say that their singer damaged his vocal chords screaming, so he doesn't do it as much anymore. It might have been a different singer (different band of course), not sure. But if it is the right guy, I prefer the not screaming music. Thanks everyone.

I only have A Story in White, though I can wholeheartedly recommend that. I keep meaning to pick up Sleep and Release and Seclusion (especially Seclusion), but I never seem to get around to it.

Seclusion's a mini-album/EP, I think, and I know Nacho at least really likes it.

Yah I have 'A Story in White' and it is utter pr0nage, I think it was uploaded by yourself in one of the old YSI threads. I wanted to get a different record of theirs but 'Seclusion' is like £9.99 and it doesn't have that much material on...hum, maybe I shoulda bought it anyway.

Ah well, may pick just pick a CD of theirs up at random.

£8.99 on Amazon at the moment, but I'm sure I've seen it cheaper - Amazon's prices fluctuate quite a lot. Keep an eye on it, I suppose.

Thanks for reminding me about them, anyway.

Thanks for reminding me about them, anyway.

But then they bum you with delivery costs.

Do you like Oceansize? I thought I would recommend them after Amazon did a 'If you like A, you'll like B' on me. They use some really angular riffs, 'A Homage to Shame' would be a good tune to check out.

Bit of an odd way to use this thread, offer a recommendation without being asked first :amaze: .

Bartender
03-13-2006, 03:47 PM
True, but if you can bump the total price of the order over £15, you can choose a free delivery option.

I've not heard Oceansize, but I've also had them recommended to me (Effloresce, I think). Just never paid attention so far. I'll see if I can get a soundclip of that song on Amazon.

3rdplanet
03-13-2006, 04:03 PM
I have no trouble bumping an order about £15, it's the paying for it I can't do :p .

I would send that track to you but my PC had to be formatted and all my music was lost; if I buy the record (may go to HMV tomorrow), I can send some stuff then.
