Someone please tell me some bands to take a listen to. Anything you feel is a must listen to, keep in mind I dont like death metal and the likes. Im mostly into prog rock and soft rockish stuff, and a little metal. Examples are dredge and porcupine tree. I like coheed as well but this might be the wrong place to ask for similar bands.
Thanks.

edit: Wow, I just remembered this band. Unexpect http://www.unexpect.com I've only heard one song but it sounds like maybe something you would like.

Its not bad, there's a hell of a lot going on in there. I'll have to listen to it a lot to get anything out of it. Sorry I missed yer post, I was at Jethro Tull that night:thumb:

What sorta music is Jethro Tull?
Depends on the era.
Up through Aqualung he's blues/y. Thick as a Brick and a Passion Play are both excellent progressive albums. Songs From the Wood is really folky and lighthearted.
After that I really have no idea.

11-14-2005, 12:00 PM
Its pretty much folk/blues prog. I think they got more prog as time went on, but xizoesira pretty much summed it up. Except for the he part. Ian Anderson is the front man. Jethro Tull was an British inventor in the agricultural revolution. I think he invented the seed dril.
Pre-thick they were pretty bluesy, then they got a bit more progressive, then pretty folkish (they already had a decent bit of folk in their sound) for Songs from the Wood. Then the 80s hit and I pretty much don't know. I think they got more folk and proggish, but I cant tell you for sure.

Guys I have came here before, but to no avail.
I like Metallica, Megadeth, System of a Down, some Dream Theater and some Trivium.
I like heavy music. I like fast music. I don't really like screamo all that much. I like intelligent music, not just generic songs with just like one or two riffs that don't even sound all that good. Can anyone help me out?

We'll if you like Dream Theater you might like Symphony X, Nevermore, Spiral Architect and Rush. Rush isn't really heavy, but very good prog rock.
Try some Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Pantera. They are very similar to Metallica and Megadeth.
You may also like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Hibria, Iced Earth (as G M ac07 mentioned) and Mastodon.

In my opinion, Disintegration.

Definatley get some Soilwork albums, starting with A Preditors Portrait. I actually just posted a topic on them last night, you can just look through my topics and find that post somewhere if you're interested on what other people think about the band.
I will have to check out the rest of those bands on the list. I like In Flames a lot, so hey. The more music, the better.

Well, it depends on what you consider "old school stuff". Some newer metal that's pretty low on screaming would be Nevermore, and then of course there's power metal. You could also maybe check out some thrashier stuff, that's more or less just yelling, some stuff like Kreator maybe?

I was wondering if anyone can recommend me something on par or similar to Arcturus' Sham Mirrors album. Secondly I was wondering if there are any albums by Garm (He does the vocals on TSM, yes?) that aren't terrifying, I mean, I'm not really into Black Metal. If he's only done the Black Metal stuff just give me a starting point, I guess, because I really like his vocal style on that album. If there's really nothing close to that style on his other work, could someone maybe point me in the right direction? Once again, a fairly broad request and I hope somebody can help a brother out, thanks in advance.

one that would create such an awsome wall of sound that it would shatter n00b ears upon first listening.
Black/death/grind whatever would be acceptable
i'm using this as an example of what kind of noise explosions i'm looking for as its the most extreme example in my (limited) music collection.

lintmunro: Age Of Silence, Solefald and Arcturus all share some members and sound. the2stranger knows a lot more on this subject.
FSMM: Wormed, the vocalist sounds like a frog and pig having sex, but its not sesame street. I don't like them at all, but it's what you want. And there's Portal, if you can find the Australian band, not the post-Cynic project of the same name. I know they have a song called Antiquate.

Stratovarius:
Father Time
Will The Sun Rise
Eternity
Speed of Light
Stratosphere
Those are all from Episode, only album of theirs I own. They're pretty sweet songs, but that's about all the good stuff on that CD, rest is pretty mediocre. I hear Visions is their best album but I've yet to check it out.
Symphony X:
Fallen
The Oddysey
Smoke and Mirror
Sea of Lies
Don't know too much Symphony X myself, there's a few good songs though.

Ulver is Garm's main band. They do have two black metal albums, but other than that, they are electronica/trip-hop/whatever and they've also got a folk album. I strongly reccomend Kveldssanger, which is the folk album and truely brilliant. Go for Perdition City for a trip-hop/whatever album.

Depends on what you want. If you want thier tr00 black metal days, the first 2 albums is what you want. Ethrone Darkness Triumphant is thier not-so-black metal album (along with the rest of them) but I think they're still good. Spiritual Black Dimensions is a more atmospheric keyboardy album, unlike Puritanical Euphoric Mianthropia which is a really heavy album. Here are a few songs from each album.
For All Tid (For All Time)
Det Nye Riket
Over Bleknede Blaner Til Dommedag
Glittertind
Stormblast (Storm blown)
Alt Lys Er Svunnet Hen
Sorgens Kammer
Antikrist
Ethrone Darkness Triumphant
Mourning Palace
In Deaths Embrace
Master of Disharmony
Spiritual Black Dimensons
Reptile
Promised Future Aeons
The Insight And The Catharsis
Puritancial Euphoric Misanthropia
Architecture Of A Genocidal Nature
Indoctrination
The Maelstrom Mephisto
Death Cult Armageddon
Lapers Among Us
Alleghens Dod I Helves Rike
Hevenly Perverse

What I've heard of Cult Of Luna, the main difference is they have hardcore style vocals, but similar music to the other bands. So it all depends if it was the vocals or the music you didnt like...

For sonata go with Silence and for Blind Guardian go for Imaginations from the Other Side.....and for the cult of luna question...well it's all a matter of trying each band....pelican are like cult of luna without vocals.....isis are like cult of luna with less hardcore vocals and more growled style one's....the same for neurosis.

Woody Guthrie

Jeff Buckley influences/smiliar:
Patti Smith

Van Morrison

Get Exile On Main Street and for earlier days get Aftermath, you could also go with Let it Bleed, Between the Buttons or Sticky Fingers, or if your more psychedelic Their Satanic Majesties Request is good.
For certains songs on each album for Their Satanic Majesties Request I recommend: She's A Rainbow, Cithadel, 2000 Light Years From Home. For the album Sticky Fingers I recommend: Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Sway, Brown Sugar, Wild Horses. For Between the Buttons I recommend: Let's Spend The Night Together, Ruby Tuesday. For Let it Bleed I recommend: Gimmie Shelter, Country Honk, Midnight Rambler, Let It Bleed, Monkey Man, You Got the Silver, You Can't Always Get What You Want. For Aftermath I recommend: Paint It Black, Stupid Girl, Lady Jane, Under My Thumb. And for Exile On Main Street I recommend: Rocks Off, Shake Your Hips, Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia, Torn and Frayed, Happy, Ventilator Blues, All Down The Line, Shine A Light. But I recommend any thing pre-78 Stones.
You lucky dog... I will probably never have a chance to see them live :upset:

Disillusion - Back to times of splendour
3 inches of blood - don't know the album name
Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Taw
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Dark Tranquility - Character (that's the new album if I'm right)
Pain of salvation - remedy Lane
Cephalic Carnage - Anomalies
I hope this helps some, I know they're not all along the lines of what you listen, but good music nonetheless

Alexisonfire, definitely. Their self titled cd is more screaming. Their other one: Watch Out! is more singing, but still screaming. It's probably a good first choice. Depends if you like singing or screaming.
Get some Finch if you haven't already, and Sparta. Porcelain is a good CD.

I'm fair open minded, but I'd prefer if the production didn't TOTALLY blow (which I hear is rare for BM...). Thanks in advance.

Both of those albums have black metal influence, but they are by far not black metal.
And if you don't want to hear bad production, stay away from black metal as that is a huge part of way black metal sounds.

Before I start, this is not directed at you, but at people getting into black metal in general.
I can't stand when people come into the genre saying how terrible the production is. The production is not top quality recording studio state of the art, etc, but it is the best production for the music. If a majority of BM had crystal clear production, it would be terrible. Half of what makes black metal great is the atmosphere, and a lot of the atmosphere is obtained through the production qualities.
Take for example Burzum - Filosofem. This album has tons of fuzz, yet I would consider it to be one of the most perfectly produced black metal albums. Perfect production doesn't always mean crystal clear, but what is perfect for the music.
So saying that the production for most black metal "blows" is very very wrong. If you don't like the production, stay away from the music. It's not as though you have to listen to it.
If you really want to get into Black Metal, then you should visit the Black Metal Thread and check out the albums mentioned in the first post. Don't try to get yourself into the genre with a bunch of psuedo-black, half-black bands, listen to the real thing.
I'd recommend starting with Burzum - Filosofem / Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger / A Blaze In The Northern Sky.

I would like to recomend Alter Bridge. This is album One Day Remains was veiwed wrong by alot of people. Everytime i ask someone do you know Alter Bridge? If its a yes i ask do u like them? They say no their alot like creed. They are not creed. Not even close..the songs they've done on that cd Creed could never do. Tremonti and the guys have definatly improved greatly and hooking up with Myles Kennedy who is forming to be one of the most exciting frontment when live. Tremonti's breathtaking solos win the croud. And Myles voice and Scott Stapps voice cant be compared...their different.
Their first single Open Your Eyes sound alot like Creed, they didnt want to loose all their old creed fans. People got the wrong impression...Broken Wings sounds like Creed as well so people said, this is creed with a different singer. It isnt, listen ot their cd, listen to metalingus, Creed couldnt imagine doing this song. This cd is much heavier than the creed cd's. The sound is not similar.
Their next CD will not sound like Creed. No more, it will be heaveir is what AB fans have heard from Tremonti. The Record label gives them no promotion as well so their sales for One Day Remains sucked. Theres alot of interveiws and live performances at www.alterbridgeband.net jus click on media. They have like a load of stuff there.:thumb:

Cryptocracy? Maybe you mean Cryptopsy...
Well, their first two albums, Blasphemy Made Flesh and None So Vile are both amazing, and the new one isnt bad, bud I'd ignore the ones in between. Some good songs are
- Slit Your Guts
- Open Face Surgery
- Gravaged (A Cryptopsy)
- Orgiastic Disembowelment
- Phobophile
Cynic.
Cynic only really had one album, if you dont consider the few demos floating around. Anyways, that album is focus and it's unbelievable, I'd seriously recommend anything off of it, but here are a few standouts.
Songs:
- Textures
- Veil Of Maya
- Celestial Voyage.

For would Machine Head I would recommend Burn My Eyes. The problem with Machine Head in my opinion is that they have done maybe 15 excellent songs, spread over all their albums, with average songs used as if for fillers. Possibly no one else will agree though.
Some good songs are davidan, elegy, struck nerve, from this day, imperium.
