Can someone recommend me some Darkthrone, Ive heard Transilvanian Hunger is a great album, should i get it?
Yes, get it.
The first four Darkthrone albums are all great.
Soulside Journey is their first one which is death metal, but I still recommend it.
A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Under A Funeral Moon, Transylvanian Hunger are all black metal and all highly recommended.
Some people would also recommend Panzerfaust, but check out the first four albums first.

If I was to get one Radiohead album to start out with, what should it be?
I would say go with OK Computer. The Bends is also a fantastic album, though it's OK Computer that's considered their masterpiece.
If you want something a bit more out-worldly, I absolutely love Kid A, but that's very different.

If I was to get one Radiohead album to start out with, what should it be?
The Bends or Hail to the Thief would be my guessing. I know most people would say OK Computer because its typicaly hailed as their best but I found it a little bit harder to like then The Bends. And Hail to the Thief I thought was their catchyiest album but not even close to best.
Bartender
10-18-2005, 04:20 AM
I suppose I'll go against this trend and recommend Ok Computer as a starting album. I don't see how it's any less easy to get into than The Bends (I actually found it a lot easier, but that's beside the point) and it's far better than it.

you can also try the new album: Red For Fire, it's more a vkingblack approach.

Didn't know whether to add the DEP into the examples of bands I was looking for, as they have a slightly different sound I felt. Will give Glass Casket a look into as the drumming was recorded by a member from Glass Casket wasn't it? Really like the drumming on that record.

I think the drummer and bassist from Glass Casket are now playing for Between the Buried and Me (Alaska). The band in general sounds like BtBaM with less clean parts.

So I've really been getting into stuff like early Pink Floyd, Rubber Soul/Revolver Beatles, the Velvet Underground, and electric Bob Dylan lately. I was wondering if there were any other bands with that similar 1965-1970 "vibe" that these bands have.
I hope you understand the style I'm going for- kind of Psychedelic, kind of Bluesy, weird lyrics, not necessarily great vocals, but something that makes it instantly recognizable. I was just wondering if there's anything similar to that kind of sound. I know it sounds kind of picky, but I've really been digging that kind of not over-produced, raw bluesy/psychedelic/almost progressive stuff lately, and was hoping I could delve deeper into that kind of a subgenre of rock.

Erm, maybe Tom Waits? He's a singer/songwriter from the '80s, but I think he fits what you're talking about quite well. Get Rain Dogs if you're looking for an album recommendation. Arch Enemy, In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Kalmah, Norther, Children of Bodom, Into Eternity, Arsis
Add to that - Autumn Leaves, Gates of Ishtar, Dissection, Eucharist, Skyfire, some Hypocrisy, and maybe Melechesh. Note the emphasis on Eucharist.
Melechesh is more folk-black metal, but it should be palatable to those of melodic death tastes.

Chaosphere has NO clean guitars whatsoever, that might give you a clue as to what the content is like.

But here are some songs though:
Imaginations from the other side

Valhalla
Precious Juruesalm

I'm not one of the more prominent PM listeners around but you could start with: Helloween - Keeper of the seven keys part 1 and 2 ( most say these are the first Powermetal albums ever) ,Galloglass - Legends from now and nevermore, Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle earth or Somewhere far beyond, Dragonforce - Sonic Firestorm, and last but not least Dungeon - Rise to power

Yeah, I love Hansi's voice on that album, ive heard about 6 or seven songs from it. Out of what i heard though theres one thing that bothers me a lil, the rythm guitars in a few are too low in the mix. But besides that, its realy good.

Michael Schenker has a couple acoustic songs here and there. Nightmare is the first that springs to mind.
Blind Guardian also did a couple good acoustic songs on their album Imaginations from the Other Side.
A great acoustic group overall is the ska group Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution.
Blackmore's Night is largely acoustic, and might help you get into some folk and classical influences.

Eagleheart by Stratovarius usually does it for me. As well as Forever by Edguy and Pure by Lost Horizon.
In fact, Edguy and Lost Horizon are generally pretty happy guys in general. But it's not like a relentlessly cheerful kind of happy, it's more like an energetic "**** yeah!" kind of happy.

I listen to mostly classic rock, but I'd like to get into some more metal. Now when I'm not listening to classic rock, blues, etc. I've got a pretty narrow group of bands that I listen to. I'll listen to early-mid 90's AFI (I know it's not metal, just giving more of my likes), about up to The Art of Drowning. I'm a decent System fan, but much more of their earlier stuff. (nu-metal, but I'm working my way up). I'm a decent fan of Dream Theater and Trans-Siberian Orchestra when it comes to prog-influenced metal. And for real metal I pretty much only listen to Disillusion (http://www.disillusion.de/). I don't know how many of you have heard of them, so I linked the band site.
I usually am not a fan of the ol' cookie monster vocals, but the same goes for high pitched screamers such as those found on dream theater and the likes. I'm getting better with cookie monsters (see Disilluison), but would like if they're kept to a minimum.
Thanks a lot. I'll edit in anything more I think of.
Also, I use Rhapsody from listen.com for streaming music, so if you know if bands do or don't allow their music to be streamed, that would be a plus. If not, I can still try sound clips from CD store websites and band web sites.

I recently bought Horror Show by Iced Earth, and downloaded Burnt Offerings by Iced Earth, and I love them both. I love the melodic, epic feel of Horror Show, and I love the heaviness of Burnt Offerings. I was wondering what would be a good album to pick up next?

Something wicked this way comes is a good one to get next. It has the melodic stuff you talked about but is a bit darker. Their latest album has grown on me latly,The glorious burden, it has a different vocalist on it so it might take a bit getting used to after Matt Barlow but he is good too.

For some metal:
Alchemist-progressive metal with some more "rocky" riffing mixed with some "thrashy" riffing;they use a lot of keyboard sounds and have thrashish yelling vocals with some singing too
http://www.alchemist.com.au/html/audio.htm <---some mp3 samples
Chalice-Doomy gothic metal; A rather unknown band but you can find them at some online music shops. I really like them because they actually put songwriting and riffs to match the vocals, rather than hide behind them.
http://www.chalice.mu/liaising_pandora.mp3
http://www.chalice.mu/static.mp3
http://www.chalice.mu/child_of_the_matador.mp3
Sikth-kind of like SOAD if they were a legit metal band with some odd shifting riffs and vocals; I suggest the song "Hold My Finger" but the songs on their site are representative also. http://www.sikth.com/
Into Eternity-power + melodic death? Hard to describe; they use a mix of vocals(lower growl, shierk, melodic power metal); though the harsh vocals aren't so bad for beginners, I was fine with them even when I didn't like harsh vocals. There are a few mp3s to download here http://www.intoeternity.net/disc.php
While Heaven Wept-progressive doom with quite melodic vocals http://music.download.com/whw/3600-8659_32-100074696.html?tag=listing_song_artist
and....
Atheist-progressive death metal; very awsome stuff, the vocals aren't overly harsh and they have songs in which you can find something new with each listen. Also, each album has its own unique flavor:
from Piece of Time(thrashier)
http://www.unheardonline.com/audio/Atheist%20-%20%20I%20Deny.mp3
from Unquestionable Presence(crazier riff changes, more deathy)
http://shop.relapse.com/content/downloads.aspx?MediaTypeID=2 (scroll down a bit)
from Elements (less crazy riff changes but with a jazzier sound)
http://www.unheardonline.com/audio/07-Mineral.mp3
I hope you can find something in this post to your liking. I would be interested to know what you think.

Thanks a lot. I got a lot of paper writing to do today, so I'll definitely check some of it (if not all) out.
So far I've listened to Alchemist, and had mixed feelings. It's pretty good, I just don't know if I'd go and buy it. Just doesn't have that click, but I've only lisened to the songs once, so they may grow on me.
If anyone knows similar bands to Disillusion (I ran a search, didn't get anything really). They are a good 75+% of the metal I listen to now (if not more), so that would be cool.
I really apriciate(sp) that list, and the fact that you put samples for me.
The Chalice is pretty good too, a bit more what I'd listen too, I think. I'm not too sure what to think about the vocals though. Usually that kinda vocals would put me off, but I'm just not sure yet. I liked the flute, or flute effect, in the first song. I'm a sucker for the flute (Jethro Tull tomarrow!)

I just listened to Disillusion. They're pretty good, for a start. Anyway, based on listening to them, the first band that came to mind was Winds. That may well just because of the heavy incorporation of classical bits into the first Disillusion song I heard, so I don't think it's a perfect recommendation. Worth checking out, though. I couldn't find any handy mp3s, but here's their site if you want to do some looking of your own: http://www.winds.ws/index2.php
Second, I recommend Theory in Practice. Death metal, but the vocals in particular are similar to the harsher vocals in Disillusion; not quite growling in the same deep way as many death metal bands, but slightly rasping. And their music is just fantastic, with an unusual emphasis on keyboards for a death metal band. MP3s;
http://hem.passagen.se/theory/Colonizing%20The%20Sun.mp3
http://hem.passagen.se/theory/Conspiracy%20in%20Cloning.mp3
There are several more available at their official site (http://www.theoryinpractice.cjb.net/); I just picked my favourites offhand.
I'd second Bryan's Atheist recommendation; they're highly technical, jazz fusion-influenced death metal which I think you might like. The vocals always brought to mind a slight harsher Dave Mustaine for me, so you should be fine with them. Unfortunately their very best songs don't seem to be available for free download.
Let us know feedback on what we recommend, so the recommendations can be further honed.

Thanks bartender too. Winds is actually on rhapsody (the only one out of both lists). I think the classical influence is part of why I like Disillusion. The first music I actually started listening to on my own (not just listening to whatever is on) was classical, so I think that may have some subconcious influence even though I can't listen to it for more than 5 minutes now.
I've listened to Sikth a bit, and I wasn't really in the mood for it, so I didn't really give it much of a chance. Into eternity, though, of the 4 I've listened to it seems like it's the best fit for me (I'm not all the way through them). Just kinda clicked. I'm looking forward to Atheist now too.
The Atheist was kind of a let down, it just didn't seem to fit. Not that I didn't like it, I just didn't really like it a whole lot either.
While Heaven Slept was pretty good too. Definitely on the re-listen list.

Hey guys I was wondering if you could help me find some heavy metal/hard rock in French. I barely find anything on google.
Must:
-have lyrics in French
-no growling/screaming crazy stuff
-be good
Anybody know some bands? Also, if it's possible to download songs, please mention it.
Try Metal-Archives, and look at the reviews for each band.
The only French metal bands I know are extreme metal, which is what you don't want.

This might be sort of broad, but I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of some good metal or music in general with really good clean vocal work, preferrably not power metal (I love power metal, but that style of singing is getting old). I know it's broad, but it's a challenge I hope you guys are up for...thanks in advance.

If you like good vocals with lots of emotion and power, get into the Barlow years of Iced Earth. Actualy any Iced Earth has good vocals.
Some ppl say they are power metal and others say there more thrashy.

I can't seem to get into Iced Earth, really, but thanks
Too broad...I could recommend you some very good alternative/prog/indie stuff, but I don't know if you'd like it at all. Going for some simple alternative style rock, try Dredg, The Wildhearts, Muse, Faith No More, and The Who. But they're pretty random picks, to be honest.
I'm not much of a Who fan and I listen to the others already, except Wildhearts, who I'll check out. Thanks anyways guys.

Do you know Anathema? Are You There? (mp3) (http://anathema.rockmetal.art.pl/mp3/anathema-are_you_there.mp3). This song is softer with less of a beat, but the band ranges from very ambient to doom metal. Panic, Deep and Judgement have much more beat like that Katatonoa song. Also try their songs Inner Silence, Radiance, Shroud Of Frost, A Fine Day To Exit, Parisienne Moonlight and Emotional Winter for all sorts of emo/depresso/gotho stuff

Yeah, Cynic are the most obvious bet. Try Planet X, Ephel Duath and Gordian Knot if you're into that sort of thing as well. Atheist are great, if you've never heard them before. I can't seem to find the link to the jazz metal competition...are you sure it was a category?
Yes, see, this was quoted from the Death Metal Compotition one.
Pick any genre, save for the following:
- Black metal
- Melodic Death metal
- Progressive metal
- Jazz metal
- Death metal
Those are the genres' the winners could not pick for the next Metal Compotition Thread Genre.

I see many people say Judgement.. I haven't heard it all, so I don't know. It's about the middle album on their timeline. Anyway, it's bound to be good.
The Silent Engima and anything before that is doom metal if you're interested.

Scream Bloody Gore is probably their best album for anyone who's never listened to them before. Quite possibly their best album, actually. Human is probably what I'd say after that. For songs I'd advise just getting your hands on Scream Bloody Gore and then going from there, to be honest.
I wouldn't say Scream Bloody Gore is the best intro to Death. Their best album, probably, but probably not the best introduction.
I'd say start off with Human because it's the middle point of their progressive and old-school stages.
