whats viking metal?

Neurotoxin
09-20-2005, 04:37 PM
Viking metal is a sub-genre of black metal music which was created by Bathory. A lot of people mistake Viking metal for any metal with lyrical themes about Viking or Scandinavian mythology, heathenism, etc. However, this is a completely different musical style. Arrangements are usually more complex than the somewhat simple early black metal that originated in Norway in the early 1990s. The most prominent Viking metal bands are Enslaved, midperiod Bathory, Thyrfing and Moonsorrow.

Lyrically, viking metal is often epic, depicting great battles between viking warlords and their Christian counter-parts.

Hope that helps...

In Flames aren't progressive, but if you like Opeth you'll probably like them (These are the only two 'extreme' metal bands I like). Go for old-school IF, like The Jester Race and Whoracle and Colony. Their newer stuff isn't as good.

If you like Athiest, be sure to check out Cynic. Download their album Focus (preferably the 2004 remix). Extremely technical death metal mixed with jazz fusion. Best songs: Veil of Maya, How Could I, I'm But a Wave to, Textures, Sentiments. Hell, more or less their whole album.

I'd say reinventing the steel is as slow as pantera gets albumwise, and its still heavy as ****. There are a handful of mellow songs strewn throughout their work, which no doubt you've probably already listened to.

As for lighter metal, try a bit of dream theatre if you haven't already, petrucci is awesome guitarist but they mix genres a bit, are keyboard heavy and have a classically trained singer so if thats not your thing you might not like it. Anthrax has some classic songs and Megadeth if ya steering more towards the classic type of metal and Soilwork is pretty **** heavy yet with a light vibe in it as well thats not overly satanic so try that if ya haven't already.

Dark Tranquillity is a cut above all other Gothenburg bands. You'll certainly like At The Gates. Try Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy... you might like a lot of the metalcore bands who are certainly influenced by band like In Flames, for example Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, and Unearth. I don't like these bands as much but they're still pretty good. Trivium you may like, but they're like Nu-Metal all over again, with stupid lyrics and angst and stuff. They do have wicked riffs and solos though.

That's their electronic album, isn't it? I've not heard it, but I've heard that it's a trip-hop album (or trip-hop-ish). If so, you want to get yourself some trip-hop.

Some of the better 'obscure/non mainstream' artists that definatly need a checkout (you've probobly heard of quite a few):

Mountain
Grand Funk Railroad
Poco
Blind Faith
Blue Cheer
James Gang
The Allman Brothers Band
Traffic
Ten Years After
Canned Heat
Buddy Miles
Johnny Winter
The Marshall Tucker Band
MC5
Procol Harem
Quicksilver Messenger Service
Vanilla Fudge

That took a while, so +rep would be appreciated.

Cheeto-t, I'm not sure what you've heard already, but I think Unearth is one of the better ones. Trivium is good too. They're more straight up metal than metalcore, though. The vocals take some getting used to. I like Killswitch engage, too. Good vocals and riffage, but some people complain about how the lyrics are semi-emo. I don't care.

I included those first 3 bands because they are called Metalcore sometimes, and I think anyone who would like those metalcore bands would like them too.

In Flames (older albums- The Jester Race, Whoracle, Colony), Kalmah (they have the best voice i've ever heard), and Norther are all really melodic death metal, they're also some of my favorite bands. Check out Kalmah's They Will Return and Norther's Mirror of Madness (the title song rocks). Norther also has a nice cover of The Final Countdown.

You'd probably like Children of Bodom too if you havn't already heard them, but there more Power Metal with harsh vocals, but they're still really talented and very melodic. I'd reccomend Follow The Reaper as their best album.

I'd just tell you to get Ace Of Spades (the album). That's what I like most that I've heard by them. But yeah, that's probably the most generic pick there is.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Can anyone recommend me some metal bands sort of like Dream Theater? Although I hear symphony X mentioned a lot from this question. Im not a fan of their vocals so is there anything else? Thanks.

Control Denied's self-titled album (essentially Death with a different vocalist, playing technical/progressive metal). You could also check out Liquid Tension Experiment, which I gather is like an instrumental Dream Theater.

Liquid Tension Experiment are a pretty good, and they feature 3 members from DT (Jphn Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess). Either of their two albums would make a good starting place.

Can someone recommend me some Motorhead. I only heard Ace of Spades and Line in the Sand. I have been meaning to check more of their stuff for years, but I keep on forgeting.

Get the albums On Parole/Motorhead (hopefully the re-issue) and Bomber, as these are my favourite albums and they really are full of classic tracks.

Spiral Architect is kind of like Dream Theater. Avenged Sevenfold is kind of like a metalcore version of Dream Theater.

Contrary to everyone else, I would say to get their live album "No Sleep Till Hammersmith" it's a great selection of songs from the first four albums and the sound quality is much better than the albums themselves.

Hey guys,

I don't know if any of you have heard any Riverside, but if you could reccommend me something like that then I would be very grateful. (they are kind of symphonic prog, but google them for a review if you are interested. Very nice.)

Also, the song No Quater by Led Zeppelin, Indifference by Pearl Jam, the start of Present Tense by Pearl Jam, a few other songs - Could you recommend me some more songs with this kind of really mellow theme to them. I just love the No Quater feel.

Try the band Anathema, they are very atmospheric, not always soft though, not usually happy either, but it's awsome music

These are varying types of mellow
Broken Social Scene - Looks Just Like The Sun, Lover's Spit, Cranley's Gonna Make It.
Aphex Twin - Nanou2, Xtal, Iz-Us
Salmonella Dub - Push On Through, Ez On
The National - Daughters Of The Soho Riots
Fagan (www.fagan.com.au) - Dante, Slight Return, Beautiful Mundane
The Gathering - Great Ocean Road
the underwater theme from Donkey Kong Country on SNES

inferno seriosly rocks, its their latest album. there are tons of greatest hits albums to but only one is any good, i think its the only one actually released by the band to, not sure. its just called motorhead, the best of. it just has a grey cover with a picture of lemmy. its two discs. all the hits and tons of other essential listening.

I am doing a book project for school and need to get some songs that relate to the book. It doesn't matter what genre the music it is, any kind would be fine. Some stuff I'm looking for:

Eerie songs, songs about killing animals, angry songs, songs about wanting to go home, songs of despair, songs that lead up to a climax, songs about fear, etc.

By the way, the book is Lord of the Flies. So if you've ever read it then I'd appreciate any suggestions you have. Thanks.

I love that book!

I'll think of a few songs now....

EDIT: Hmmm.....try The Dillinger Escape Plan's "Baby's First Coffin", as its kinda climatic, and can sparsely apply to the book. Or the band Pig Destroyer, because the name obviously fits. Possibly Opeth's "Bleak", as that was what the situation was. The list can go on, of my half-assed song suggestions.
