I need to make a wrestling CD for my 10year old son. He loves wrestling and has latched onto my old rock and roll. He'll carry my CD player that is now his anywhere he can and seems to really enjoy AC/DC. Wrestling season begins soon and I promised him that I would make him a CD of songs that would pump him up right before his match. Some of the songs I have considered are: AC/DC(Thunder), Survivor(Eye of the Tiger), Quiet Riot(Bang your head) and Nazarath(Hair of the Dog). However, these are songs that are two decades old now, still have a lot of punch and he seems to get fired up by them. What I need to get are some suggestions on what is out there now, a list of songs that are semi-age appropriate but will really get your blood flowing through you veins so when you get out there on the mat your ready to take the fight to them. I've been stuck in the 80's and need some help. What are some good songs out there that have been made in the last twenty years that really get you fired up. Thanks a lot, I look like I know what I'm doing if I can make a good one for him. He of course would wonder how I did it! Ha! :thumb:

I'm getting obsessed with acoustic hard rock songs such as Atomship - Withered, Dry Kill Logic - Goodnight, Crossfade - Cold (acoustic), Breaking Benjamin - So Cold (acoustic), and other similar artists...can anyone give me some more titles to find? any input would be appreciated.

i'm into guitar bands and enjoy stuff like metallica and randy rhoads, but i have gotten bored of listening to metallica and want a more modern metal band or any metal band, preferably not nu metal. does anyone know of anything that might cure my boredom?

Might be, but i think these bands (specially the vocals) aren't as good as the pre-1990 Metallica.

IMO, Dream Theater. Labrie is a great singer. Portony is an insane drummer. Petrucci is one of the best guitarists. Jordan Rudess is a very talented keyboardist. And John Myung isn't the best bassist but is still above average.

Dave de Sylvia
08-30-2005, 03:21 AM
Nightwish are operatic metal, similar to Evanescence(sorry, the comparison has to be made) but heavier, more metal-y. The only songs I can recommend are Nemo and Wish I Had An Angel.

Bah, I think he is way above average, and his role in the band is greatly overlooked. He is an amazing bassist just for his physical skill at the instrument. I can see how he is overshadowed by portnoy and pattrucci (sp?)

Just really appreciate growls, after a while they are amazing.
But probably Opeth (Blackwater Park, there are some growls, but it's still a great listen, they add atmosphere imo).

If you got rid of growling and harsh vocals, it would not be melodic death any more.
As said before, learn to like the growls and have them grow on you, or don't even bother with music that has harsh vocals.
There is no other ways around it.

I would also like to know about the bands unearth, throwdown, from autumn to ashes, chimaira and trivium are like instrumentally and vocally if anyone knows (which im sure someone will because these bands are quite popular in the metal scene). replies appreciated.
UnEarth - I consider them metalcore. Yelling/screaming vocals with cool riffs by guitar players. Good guitar players, but very forced and weak breakdowns.
Throwdown - I haven't heard much, though they seem like typical hardcore.
From Autumn To Ashes - Haven't heard any
Chimaira - someome can do this better than me
Trivium - You might like these guys. Great guitar players, though I don't like the vocals, they are in a more traditional style, which seems to be what you're after.
Sorry I can't help more than that.

Well, you're really talking about song structure, and many different bands use many different song structures for different songs because i dont think a single bands sticks to a whoel 'soft---->heavy' structure. So, yea, 'tis a lttle vague =/
Anyway:
Can anyone reccomned some Beautiful heavy music? Like... Cynic or Aghora, Sometimes the music is light and airey, then intense, then haunting. Its hard to describe. Anyone? I've checked out Aethist, but there a tad too heavy for what i'm looking for, and i lose some sense of melody when listening to them.
EDIT: Or lighter like Agalloch... with more guts

Well if you're looking for straight up rock/metal ballads, nothing rivals the glam bands. I mentioned Skid Row's 18 & Life before, if you liked that you should try I Remember You. Bon Jovi are similar, though more "poppy". If that's your thing, try Always, Livin' On A Prayer and Wanted Dead Or Alive.
In the event you're already familiar with these, you might branch out to the forgotten heroes of 80's glammery, Hanoi Rocks. The Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Cheyenne and Don't You Ever Leave Me are all excellent places to start in this regard.
Motley Crue, of course, are the greatest band ever to walk the earth in almost every sense. Home Sweet Home, Afraid, Glitter, You're All I Need, Without You, Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away) and Misunderstood(with John Corabi) are all favourites of mine.
Also strongly recommended are Kix - Don't Close Your Eyes, Warrant - I Saw Red and Dokken - Alone Again.
If you're more interested in straightforward metal, I'm sure you're at least familiar with Metallica, Pantera etc. If not, I'll recommend a few songs... Metallica - Nothing Else Matters, Fade To Black, No Leaf Clover (I like the live version from S&M), Unforgiven
Pantera - Cemetary Gates, Floods, This Love
Ozzy Osbourne - Revelations, No More Tears, Mama I'm Coming Home, Goodbye To Romance
Black Label Society - No More Tears (Ozzy cover)
If nu-metal is more suited to you, try Cold - Wasted Years, Memento - Blister and Slipknot - Vermillion Pt. 2
If you've heard all of those, I might just die.

For the Beatles, I'd say Revolver, first and foremost, and then Rubber Soul and Abbey Road slightly below it.
For Dylan, my personal favourite is The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, but that's a very folk-y album. If that doesn't sound like what you want, then try his later, more rock-like albums - Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61 Revisited and Desire.
Those are all amongst his better-known releases, too. Once you get a feel for him (and whether you like him or not) you can start exploring his many other releases.

what are tool like?
very weird, alternative music with alot of winks towards metal
long songs in genral with weird structures, (often interlining)
the lyrics are very deep and meaningfull, and require a lot of research if you truly want to understand them.
Tool consists of Four members.
one of the things you will notice is the very rhytmic sound, and the lack of melody.
the band is really driven by the trhytm section, but their guitarist is wel capable of awesome licks too.

Tool is really hard to put in a genre.
Post-metal or post-rock doesn't seem to be too far of.
but I'm not really an expert on Tool, I enjoy their music a lot, but I'm not too big on them.
a mix between post-metal and alternative seems ok to me:)

What is there?

I want to jump up and say Nightwish, but I'm bias because I don't care for the other two. What do you like?

I don't know of those bands, but I do know this:
Fatboy Slim:
Fatboy Slim (Norman Cook) samples classic tunes, ranging from 60's soul, to 80's rock, and adds an electronic element to it. He's great.
I would recomend: You've Come A Long Way Baby.
:)
Dave de Sylvia
09-04-2005, 01:25 PM
Fatboy Slim works on original music too, now, i.e. he'll work in the studio with a new song written by x.
As for dance-rock... Kasabian, perhaps?
The Chemical Brothers have some rock songs - Hey Girl, Hey Boy, Block Rockin' Beats, Setting Sun (w/ Noel Gallagher)
The Prodigy, of course, try Firestarter, [/I]Poison, Breathe[/i] and Diesel Power
Dredg - Ode To The Sun, Catch Without Arms, Of The Room
Have you tried the Stone Roses?
does any1 have any suggestions for john lennons solo career (other than imagine)?
Adding to Riva's suggestions, here are some more essential tunes:
Free As A Bird (Demo)
Jealous Guy
Crippled Inside
Well Well Well
Oh Yoko!
Gimme Some Truth
How Do You Sleep?

I know i dont come here much but i have started another bad to my normal band and this bands a bit different. My 1st band is a standard 4 piece and my second band is:
Me-Drums/Bass (male)
Person 2-Piano/Vocals ( Female)
Person 3-Drums/Vocals (male)
Person 4-Bass/Vocals (female)
Now we are in a bit of a pickle and we need an easy song to play that has atleast piano/Keys, bass, and guitar and vocals in it. It has to be in the soft rock genre.
Could any body help out with naming songs??
Thanks

IMO Time Does Not Heal is the next best Dark Angel album. When an album comes with a label "9 songs, 67 minutes, 246 riffs!" you know it must be good
Then you have Leave Scars, which I am not so keen on, but is still worth getting.
Just so you know, both these albums have a different vocalist to the guy on Darkness Descends. He is good, but he ain't no Don Doty.

Are either of those two really neo-classical? I really thought that meant acts like Yngwie Malmesteen.
Godspeed really are. I wouldn't describe malmsteens style as especially classical at all (try telling his fans that  ), but the said band use lots of violins, cellos, etc, combined with electric/standard rock instruments, which are often used in a semi-classical way.
munky_magik
09-09-2005, 04:54 PM
In addition to those two, try ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, and their album Source Tags & Codes. Also, try Pink Flag by Wire. It doesn't sound absolutely like At The Drive-In, but it's an arty post-punk album, that kind of sounds a bit like what At The Drive-In could have sounded like at some stage.
Since you're around, would you mind suggesting a few Arcade Fire songs for me to check out. And also any other good trip-hop other than DJ Shadow, Fagan and Massive Attack.

Fagan are pretty cool, though I've only heard a couple of songs by them, via Forced Listening. There's some other band that blue introduced me too, called Hot Rubber Elephant or something. I'll look the name up later, but that was some nice trip-hop.
Also, it's not quite trip-hop, but they share elements with it; Frou Frou. Don't be afraid of the stupid name.
Jonny, yes, Arcade Fire is great. Bartender doesn't seem to think so, but I agree that the Neighbourhood songs are brilliant.

Gordian Knot
I was looking at Dream Theater (Just wanted to see if they were metal :p) and apparantly John Myung has played bass for them?
I had a quick look on metal-archives, but that didn't really explain anything more about them other then being an instrumental/progressive rock band.
What kinda sound to they have?
And what would be a good song of theirs to look into? :D
Cheers, to anyone who responds!
.. If this is the same band? :x
Bartender
09-11-2005, 09:08 AM
Yes, that's the same band. John Myung has been known to play bass and Stick for them.
Gordian Knot aren't so much a band as a collective, or a project. It's all orchestrated mostly by Sean Malone (bassist/Stickler for Cynic), and draws on a whole host of incredibly talented musicians, including the three other members of Cynic at various times (the drummer, Sean Reinert, far more frequently than the others), John Myung (Dream Theater), Trey Gunn (King Crimson), Bill Bruford (King Crimson and others), Steve Hackett (Genesis), and so on.
They have two albums, both instrumental and excellent. Their sound is kind of rock/metal fusion, hard to describe. For a song recommendation; Reflections, though you'd be hard pressed to go wrong.

Atheist's vocals sound kind of like a more lethal Dave Mustaine, if that sounds promising. Going from your liking for Dark Tranquillity and In Flames, check out At the Gates. And Children of Bodom aren't death metal, but if you like them check out Kalmah.
Report back with your findings and more can be recommended.

I need 10 of the angriest yet still listenable songs you guys could give me. I'm making a mix for my friend who listens to stuff like Chevelle and some other like-stuff, but now he's looking for some angry/heavier songs and he's come to me because i have a bigger musical taste/library than him. Ive got Pantera-Domination, 5 Minutes Alone and Mouth For War. some In Flames, some As I Lay Dying, and some Hatebreed. any suggestions??

Well he's a newbie to the heavier music, so things like, lets say, Cannibal Corpse and the like would be "unlistenable"

Recommend me some Skid Row?
It depends if you want the lighter, Bon Jovi-style stuff or the trashier stuff they got into later, or their (even later) straightforward metal stuff. I'll give you recc's for each.
From Skid Row:
18 & Life
Youth Gone Wild
I Remember You
Rattlesnake Shake
From Slave To The Grind:
Monkey Business
Slave To The Grind
Get The **** Out
Wasted Time (ballad)
From Subhuman Race:
My Enemy
Beat Yourself Blind
Frozen
The s/t is their lightest, pop-metal album. Slave To The Grind was quite a bit heavier though still with the pop edge and Subhuman Race completed the transition. If you request some in the YSI thread I'll send you whatever you want.

Erm...
Angry?
Faith No More - Jizzlobber,
Nirvana - Tourettes,
Napalm Death - Messiah (Hellhammer),
Nunslaughter - Mother, ****, Whore.
They're angry, not neccesarilly amazing heavy, but they should do. I resent the fact that you refer to heavier music as "Unlistenable".

Viking Metal.
Viking metal/melodic death
Viking metal describes bands that have Norse myth and history related lyrics to them, but that does not describe their sound. There is viking metal that sounds like folk music, power metal and black metal as well etc etc...
