I was wondering if anyone knew of any other bands in the garage rock/ psychedelic vein, I'm really digging on Orange Sunshine, The Atomic Bitchwax, and Super****666, some pretty cool tunes there. So if you had any other suggestions that'd be cool. I found all the bands at stonerrock.com

Can someone recommend me some Industrial music similar to Nine Inch Nails, and also something similar to Alkaline Trio. I'm not big on Pop-punk but they are one of the few pop-punk bands I like.
Try Orgy, Stabbing Westward (both industrial)?

I would say Scenes From A Memory as it gives the best overall impression of Dream Theater.

Firstly, it's Dream Theater. :P
I recommend you start with Awake. It's an awesome all around album. My favourite however, is Train Of Thought. It feels heavier to me, and I like it. However, many DT fans say Images & Words is their best work, although I personally don't agree. Either of those three would be a good start.

Train of Thought is too centred on heavy, shread based songs to be a good starter album for Dream Theater, I feel.
Awake is no where near as easy to get into as []Scenes....
Also, you should check out their monumental song A Change of Seasons which will give you a very good idea of what Dream Theater are all about.

SFAM would indeed be a good starter album. ToT and Awake were the two I started on, and loved them both. I was recommending on my own personal favourites though.

I'm looking for suggestions.
I like mainly Opeth, Porcupine Tree, and King Crimson, aswell as some other odds and ends. I like the folky acoustic bits (Nick Drake) and some Melodic Death (Jester Race). I'm not picky, but I definetly want something versatile like Opeth.
Prog *insert genre here* is usually good, but anything goes as long as intrumentation skills don't hinder the band.
I hear about Nevermore a lot, but I've not listened to much at all. Same goes with Death.

You're a bassist I suppose.
Here are some fine examples of technical metal with challenging basslines:
Watchtower
Cynic
Atheist
Spiral Architect
Spastic Ink
And here's a weird jazz/grind bass - drums - vocals band: Cause for Effect.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think thats the name of the band... they are metal sound a bit like Maiden?
Anyway, recommend me their best / most accessible album.
/downloads
They sound like a cross between Metallica and Maiden (although they're closer in sound to Maiden) but with more power. They're best studio album is something wicked this way comes imo, but Alive in Athens sounds pretty good too. Also check out the song the reckoning from their new album (IMO the best song with their new singer, Tim "Ripper" Owens, formerly of Judas Priest).

I would get:
Scream Bloody Gore:
This album combines Blast Snare with sheer power vocals, and some of the most intense Death Guitar work you could ever wish to hear. The whole album has a kind of Escape-age feeling, something nasty is lying beneath, and it wants to get out. The bonus and live tracks on the re-master make it even better.
Standouts:
Zombie Ritual: Death Metal is born. And what a violent birth it is.
Land Of No Return: Fantastic bonus outtake track, which completes this album.
Re-gurgitated guts: Don't let the title fool you, this is beautiful.
Leprosy:
This came out after Scream Bloody Gore. It's not as heavy, but the title track among others are some of the finest Lyrical/Musical songwriting ever commited to disc. Watch out for the instrumental interplay between Chuck, Rick, Terry and Bill. It's incredible, and has a post-Megadeth ryhthmic feel to it. Possibly my favourite.
Standouts:
Leprosy: Pioneers of the 7:00 Death metal song, this is the title track, and instant stand out from their second album.
Open Casket: Probbably the most well known from this album. Well, for me anyway.
Choke On It: This is possibly the heaviest off the album. Still, absolutley incredible stuff. Chuck was so young when he created this (and SBG) it's unreal.
Human:
This is comparitavely in the negative in terms of heaviness compared to some other Death. Allthough having said that, this album has some really solidly square compositions on it. Not to mention Together As One, which is a deffinite standout. Chuck introduces Wankery To Death Metal. Death Metal takes on wankery and gets best friends with it.
Standouts:
Together As One: This is similar to Scavenger off the next album. A good all rounder.
The Sound Of Percieverance:
Indeed, this album is the sound of percieverance. Many had written Death off by this point, but songs like Scavenger, and Spirit Crusher, it shows that Death could still pack a punch, and blow your ****ing ears off in the process. This was the original Death swansong. And it contains some Metallica style slower ballads. (BALLADS, DEATH? SCUSE ME?) But seriously, check it out if you like Scavenger. The drums and bass are very prominent throughout the album.
Standouts:
Scavenger Of Human Sorrow: Bass, Guitar, Drum and Vocal solo maybe? Yeah.
Spirit Crusher: Building on the progression of Scavenger, this carves a niché as one of the best Death songs ever. :)

A Predator's Portrait is a good place to start. Quite a bit heavier than their other releases.
Or, maybe Stabbing The Drama...toned down a little bit, but still pretty good.

Thanks for the help! I've heard that A Predator's Portrait is sort of similar to In Flames, so I think I might start with that. What is The Chainheart Machine like? I've heard that's their most original album.

Perfect recommendations. Excellent albums by an excellent band.
I love the whole Prog Rock thing, and I've been wanting to bet into bands such as King Crimson and Porcupine Tree. What are some suggestions of what I should pick up based up on my love of these albums:
The Yes Album, Fragile, Tales From Topographic Oceans (Yes); 2112, Moving Pictures (Rush); Deloused in the Comatorium (The Mars Volta)

You don't have the Legacy!?
:amaze:.
But seriously, get The Legacy, it's a Thrash staple.
Songs you might want to try:
Dog Faced Gods,
Raging Waters,
C.O.T.L.O.D (Curse Of The Legions Of Death, this borders on Death metal actually),
Over The Wall,
The Haunting.
I can't honestly recomend the Legacy enough to be honest with you.

Yes, it's good.
But from first impressions I am feeling that you enjoy heavier stuff?
If these assumptions are correct, then the Legacy, no doubt. :)

Then it'll be your style exactly.
I really think a common misconception of Death Metal is that it's all unrelentingly heavy. That is not true at all. You have Melodic Death Metal, which does have very loud and decidely random patches, yet it has a softer, gentle, and even more acoustic side.
I would honestly check some out.
Can someone recommend me some Burzum?
THX
Seen as Johnny already gave some, how about Burzum/Aske ? It's an E.P, and it has around 8 tracks on it. Each very eerie and atmospheric. Failing that deffinitely Filosofem, it's one of the better Black Metal releases.
Failing those, just get Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, it's one of the best Metal releases ever.
Johnny, you dark horse! :p
Daven

If you want tr00 black metal style, get the self-titled album, with Det Som Engang Var being similar, but a little more atmospheric, and frankly listenable. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss/i] is is a four track, 45 minute album that has a more atmospheric feel to it, and it's probably my favourite album by Burzum...but if you're a fan of a rawer, underproduced sound than their earliest albums are what you should go for.
Thx dude. I've been wanting to check out this album, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, because i've heard some really good comments on it. Ill download their stuff right now.

I respectfully disagree...I'd say that the overriding concept/theme holding it together is the idea of power, control, and how these can be abused by those holding them. There's no formal criteria for a concept album as far as I can tell, but I'd definitely count Master Of Puppets as one.
And besides, it can be looked at like this:
Battery: Childhood abuse
Master Of Puppets: Turning to drugs
Eye Of The Beholder: Falling into madness
(Welcome Home) Sanitarium: Being treated for madness
Disposable Hero: Either joining the army, or being abused by the powers
Leper Messiah: Realising the reality of religion
Orion: Death, and a search for peace
Damage Inc: Being dragged into Hell

I really don't think MoP is a concept album at all :-/.
Anyway, add Iron Maiden's Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, Porcupine Tree's Voyage 34 and In Absentia, A Perfect Circle's Thirteenth Step, Iced Earth's Dark Saga and Night Of The Stormrider and Mastodon's Leviathan to that list.

Eye Of The Beholder is on And Justice For All. Track 3 is The Thing That Should Not Be. Plus, Orion doesn't really have a meaning, what with being an instrumental and all. And Damage Inc. is about nothing in particular.

I had Thing That Should Not Be in my head as I wrote it, I just mixed up the titles.
And something that is an instrumental definitely has meaning. This is the idea that I came up with after listening to the album.

However, I think Guns N' Roses really do set the standards with ballads, with songs like Patience, Civil War, November Rain etc. If you like the ballads you've heard by them, try Velvet Revolver - Fall To Pieces and Loving The Alien.
