View Full Version : The Alt/Indie Introduce Yourself Thread

Hey everyone, I haven't been posting that often recently because of finals and the end of classes and such. But when I look at a lot of the threads, I hardly recognize many of the people.
ITT, we introduce ourselves. You can post your name if you want, maybe where you're from. Also, tell us what bands you like and maybe tell us who your newest favorite band is. Lastly, tell us how you discovered the forums and why you choose to keep coming back.
Like I said, there are a lot of posters whom I don't recognize, but I'd also like an update on the vets and what they've been listening to.
Name: Spencer
Age: 20
Location: Massachusetts
Favorite Bands: A Silver Mt. Zion, Set Fire To Flames, Broken Social Scene, Explosions in the Sky, Iron & Wine, Smashing Pumpkins, Wolf Parade, The Arcade Fire, Do Make Say Think... stuff like that. I've just recently been getting into Animal Collective--they've got some awesome tunes.
I discovered the forums through MX tabs. The people seemed cool, so I joined. I came here and posted a lot a year ago, during the glory days of YSI, and I got into a ton of new music through that. But when it was banned, I stopped coming here as much. I feel as though I've been laxing in the new music department. I'm looking forward to this summer because I might be able to download some albums by bands I've yet to hear.

Age: 18
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Favorite bands: This changes quite often, but the bands that usually stay in my favorites list are Beulah, The Decemberists, Joan of Arc (and other Kinsella bands), John Vanderslice, and Sunset Rubdown. Lately I've been listening to some B.C. Camplight, Volcano!, and XTC.
I discovered the forums through MX tabs, but didn't start posting until late 2003. I didn't come back until last month, I believe, because I got tired of some people I knew and had to get away from that and something else. Now I post because I'm bored and because I need attention.

I was just looking for somewhere I could do album reviews without much hassle. So I became a denizen of the old CD Reviews forum before branching out into other areas of the site. Since they got rid of that and replaced it with Sputnik, this I guess would be my home on the forum (though to be fair it was long before Sputnik anyway, as evidenced by my million or so posts in the Community thread).

Based on the bands he listed I'm pretty sure most of them are older than him. If that's something you're worried about, just stick with bands from the 50s-90s.

The thinking man's punk band.
Basically. Or if Mick Jagger fronted Talking Heads.
Pick up Marquee Moon, as it's their most famous album. There's really nothing quite like them: I had heard comparisons to The Strokes but that's kind of inaccurate. Television has guitar solos, as well as a groovin' bassist.

Actually, Whangarei is one of the fastest growing cities in New Zealand, with a population of over 60,000, which is growing exponentially each year. I'm not inbred, I immigrated from England. And I love this city - I wouldn't leave if you paid me!
If you want a hick town, you should go to Dargaville (52 kms west - the kumara (aka sweet potato) capital of New Zealand). Dargaville is also notable for being a population of leass than 10,000 and also having the highest STD rate per capita in the country. On second thoughts, maybe you shouldn't go to Dargaville...

I joined this place, no joke, about 5 years ago, after getting some tabs at MX. I post intermittantly and generally only in threads that really pique my interest, but I browse a good amount. *insert creepy stalker music here* I'm the music director for a college radio station, WRCU, so I use this place as one of my supplements to keep up on stuff that I otherwise would miss.
Sorry Kyle, but this made me chuckle.Ahaha, I see what you mean. I know it sounds odd, but I only really just got into the Kinks so I can't exactly have them in my favorite bands list. Pearl Jam would be there, but I only really listen to them in fads, and I'm sure I'll get tired of them again soon. TMV and Kanye might be relatively new on the scene, but I connect alot more with their music, so they made the all-time list. If it wasn't for Kanye I don't think I would have ever got into Hip Hop.

I think the comparisons are mostly just people saying that the Strokes ripped off Television because of the dual guitar riffs or something. They don't sound alike, really.

I think the comparisons are mostly just people saying that the Strokes ripped off Television because of the dual guitar riffs or something. They don't sound alike, really.
It's funny because when the first Strokes album came out, they were accused of being Television rip-offs when really they just had a vaguely similar air about them and had some melodic similarities, but now that the comparison might actually make sense everyone is talking about how "different" they sound. Critics are idiots.

Half of the people I know in Auckland are from Dargaville. They're good people, but ya' can tell where they're from.
I'm from Tauranga.
Wow, a lot of people from the MD/DC area here :-D

Hi everyone!
My name is Pete7 and I'm from Austria (Vienna), so excuse my English :). I discovered mxtabs a few years ago while looking for good tabs, because I like to play accustic guitar. I'm not playing that good but I like it. I still look for good tabs but most of the time in here I read the reviews. I love to get other opinions and views on music and albums of my favourite bands....
...which are: Chili peppers!; all the bands from the "grunge area", especially Pearl Jam; from the older stuff: Led Zeppelin, Neil Young; Brit Pop: Oasis (especially to play accustic versions myself), Verve; Coldplay; Radiohead; Nine Inch nails; Marylin Manson, and many others.....
So I hope I'm welcome

I think I like Steve Albini's lyrics in Shellac a bit more too. Big Black's lyrics are disturbing and funny, but some of Shellac's lyrics are just totally badass. Like
Hey man, I wanna have a fight with you
Regardless of my feelings on the subject,
It appears that I am going to
Get up to fight, and get (forget?) about it
I've paid more than anyone would advise for this watch and so far i am dissapointed in it....
It beeps at me at noon and seven and nine and i cannot turn off the piece of ****
Hey man, hey!
I wanna have a fight with you
From the way that you behave it is clear
to me you would like to have one too.
Let's stop, dance (?)...
and do what we both came here to do
Badass.
