My rant about music videos
The making of a poor music video, is in my oppinion one of the most careless wastes of a good oppertunity. To watch the footage which accompanies many of the songs in the mainstream right now is pretty saddening, it is in fact quite rare to spot a good one amongst the bunch. It seems to me that to simply throw together some haphazard collection of loosely related shots, just goes to proove that many of the artists aren't interested enough in their own songs.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting for all bands to produce something revelutionary, but at the very least something that is related to the meaning, or a piece of live footage which encaptures the songs spirit. I can also recognise that some styles of music are more difficult to film for than others. For example a band like Blink 182 don't really talk about anything for the entire length of their songs, so theres not point in reflecting that through their video. Unfortunately for them, their live performance suck *** too, so they just run around naked or pretend to be midgets or something. Ok so their music videos aren't great, but at least they've tried to entertain people with some of them, rather than just show the band playing in front of a multicoloured backround. e.g Foo Fighters - Times Like These, Green Day - American Idiot.
ITT: We create a vault of good music videos.
Anyways despite this overload of crap, there must be, and there are some brilliant music videos out there. So, in this thread I'm going to post a few of my favorite music videos, and give a brief description about why I like them. After watching some great videos, then you should all post some videos that you love, and we can build up a collection of amazing music videos. If this thread takes off then I will start to edit them into the first post, and they can be accessed easilly by all.
For anyone who isn't aware of http://www.youtube.com/ - this is probably your best bet to find and link to your favorite music videos.
Now go ahead and post some of your favorites, I'm dying to see some interesting footage.
Edit: Please refrain from posting videos of just your favorite band, or because you love the song. I know it's tempting, but there are other places to whore your favorite bands, it misses the point of this thread.
The Vault
Radiohead - Just
A band which puts a lot of thought into all their music videos, I don't get the relation of a lot of them to the lyrics, but they at least make me think about them. This video is probably my favorite of all time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPdoRiWhwsw&search=radiohead%20just - Kyle
At The Drive-In - Invalid Litter Dept.
This video is great for several reasons. Firstly the selection of footage does a brilliant job of capturing the songs mood. Secondly it made me undersand the meaning of the song which I had never really gotten before, I never realised how great the songs lyrics are until I watched this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwzcjQq1llw&search=invalid%20litter%20dept. - Kyle
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight
Alright, it was inevitablte that I'd choose this, but fanboyism aside, this is undeniably a great music video. The video perfectly summarises the dream like nature of the song and the album which it derrives from. It proves that mainstream bands can create a video which is both cinematically entertaining, and one which works for the songs purpose.

Dinosaur Jr. - Little Fury Things
It's so 80s, I ****ing love it.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=-aT9CPxawj8&search=little%20fury%20things - Sam
Radiohead - Knives Out
The music video "Knives Out", directed by the great Michel Gondry, is easily one of my favorites. The video captures the feel of the song which is equal parts hallucinatory, dreamy, and forlorn. What really sets this video apart, however, is its richness in scintillating visual tricks which match up very well with singer Thom Yorke's lyrics

At The Drive-In: One Armed Scissor (Live)
This is the band near its end, performing on the short-lived USA Network show "Farmclub." Youtube also features links to their performance of this same hit song on Letterman and Conan. Check it out if you want to see the future Mars Volta duo going nuts while the future Sparta guys just sort of play the song normally. An interesting view into the forces that would soon separate the band, and also a damn good song.

Pixies- Debaser
Not much to say here, but another excellent Pixies song with a somewhat grainy, abstract video. It's interspersed with some band footage, but for the most part it's a very low quality. However, the sound is pristine, so don't worry about it.

Built To Spill- In The Morning
A supremely bizarre and surreal video from one of alt. rock's finest. Check it out if you like the song, or if you're just curious.

Minus The Bear- Pachuca Sunrise
This video is also fairly abstract, and it kinda disappointed me because it didn't provide any footage of beaches or sunrises or anything that their music refers to at all times! Nonetheless, the quality is top-notch and the song is well worth checking out too. - YDload - Kyle

I have a question regarding uploading vids on YouTube:
When I posted all the Primus videos they had, I noticed there wasn't a video for "Mr. Krinkle" among the others. Now, the video kicks some major ***, so I downloaded it on Limewire, with the intent of uploading to YouTube. I filled out all the info, and 25 minutes later, YouTube had the video for Mr. Krinkle. But... I had to wait so it could process it...
Five minutes later, they tell me that they rejected it, saying it was violating their code/policy. I'm just wondering how people upload "copywrited" content, and get away with it. I've tried the same thing with two other videos (Faith No More - Epic (Live SNL), Pearl Jam - Jeremy (Live SNL), and they were both rejected. How do people do it?

This isn't a proper video, but it's one of the sickest displays of guitar playing I've heard outside in Alt/indie (don't tell that to the guys in Rock & Metal forums)

The Verve - "Life's and Ocean" (Live)
I'm trying to find their video for "Blue". It's on their DVD and IMO one of their best videos. Not the live version though.
This one's propably already listed but....

Massive Attack - Karmacoma (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzcDgQMdfWo&search=massive%20attack), yeah not alt/indie, but i love this video
Of Montreal - Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PoJv4N1Too&search=of%20montreal), like a 3 year old's acid trip
Two Gallants - Steady Rollin' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gK38qGNvv0)
I heart Two Gallants. Anyway, the video is kind of a personal live-like setting and it feels like you're there watching them. I found it to be very entertaining and warm, not to mention the song is fantastic.

I'm surprised no one has said The Golden Path by Chemical brothers and Flaming Lips, fantastic video. I'll try find link now.
Edit: Chemical Brothers and Flaming Lips - The Golden Path http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79V6qnih-0M&search=golden%20path%20video
There we go.
I'll update the videos later, but people who are posting videos just because they like the songs....don't. It misses the point of this thread completely, read my rant in the first post and you might understand better.
I just wanted to say that the Pixies-Debaser link from the first post links to the one armed scissor video
All videos have been updated/corrected. Quite a nice collection building up now.

Really funny video. The masks thing is really really cool, and it's quite odd. I think it's all tongue in cheek, like the song.
