according to the drummers digest magazine, in which portnoy gave an interview, they are planning getting together to do a collaboration. if somebody knows something about this and has some info about it give it please. i didnt know where to put this (opeth, dt or pt thread) so that is why i made a separate thread.

they are definitely interested, but scheduling conflicts haven't really moved it past the planning stages

i think it has been mentioned in each of the threads. ask anyone there and they'll link you to an interview or provide some info

I was excited at first, but then I remembered that I'm not much of a DT or Opeth fan.

So now I'm kind of bummed because if Wilson plays with another band, that means less PT time, and less PT times means less musician enjoyment.

Harris>Portnoy anyways.

This has been rumored about for a while now.

I don't care much for Portnoy, but I would still love to hear.

Mikael Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson will be good, but I'd prefer another drummer.

Mike Portnoy and Mikael Akerfeldt are some of my top favorite musicians. Not a Wilson fan though.

Yeah I'm not a lot into extra-precise drumming.

I like my rhythms dissonnant and double time dammit.

If maybe Portnoy tried to do some interesting things like early in his career it would work.

I'd have to agree, I think Gavin grooves a lot more than Portnoy.

Portnoy is skilled enough to play something the would mesh with Alkerfeldt and Wilson. I wonder who is gonna play bass?

Wilson did about half the bass recording on Deadwing, so I wouldn't doubt he'd do it...But chances are they'll get someone else.

Perhaps Justin Chancellor. He's prog. He's British. He's no side projects (that I know of..)whereas the rest of Tool's members have several.

I like Portnoy, but I don't think his style would fit that well with Wilson and Aukerfeldt. I'd still like to hear it though. It would be interesting.

Portnoy is über precise at playing, but he seems to lack... eh... soul. Let0s just call it "lack of ethnic background".

Not to misdemean those who don't have ethnic background, though. I just have a thing for latin rhythms.

EDIT: I like Portnoy's precision. That's the overall subject.

I think the collaboration will be very interesting no matter how you look at it. All the respective musicians' bands have the ability to make great prog and beautiful music, no doubt. So if it happens, I really look forward to it.

Steven Wilson. Vocalist/Guitarist for Porcupine Tree.
He's an amazing songwriter.

I personally think Akerfeldt is slightly overrated, but I still respect the man's talent, and this would be great to hear.

That would be an interesting combo, Portnoy is a good drummer but not the best.

I'm really looking foward to this, it should be pretty amazing.

I like Wilson's bass lines a lot, so I wouldn't mind him doing it for this. Having Chancellor would be badass, but I don't see it happening.

I'm anxious to listen to this "Super Group" even though I think Portnoy is a great drummer I would change him in this band becuse I don't think he would blend with Akerfeldt and Wilson that well, but if they told him to play they should have a reason why.....

Someone brought up the point of who would play bass, and it kind of made me bummed that they're going for the standard rock/metal lineup with this. Why not branch out and do something completely different for both of them? I don't know if Portnoy fits into the equation though.

I doubt they'll throw in a full time flutist or something, but throwing in a flute piece wouldn't be too far out.

See: Idiot Prayer

You shouldn't be bummed about the standard line up because no matter what, I doubt they'll stick strictly to the standard insturments.

He is a very good drummer, i didnt say he was bad, but I'd prefer another drumemr who will make better grooves or put more feeling into it.

im not a drummer, but i think portnoy's grooves are uhh....groovy. im not gonna lie, i haven't heard much of opeth's drummer, so i can't compare those two.

im a big fan of PT, but i think portnoy takes the cake for me. point being i feel his groove, so his "feel" + precision = winner

Moses

I don't know maybe Portnoy just sounds really bland and precise to fit Dream Theater and he actually has some humanity behind the set in reality.

Personally I think they should replace Portnoy with Phil Rudd from ACDC. So you've got some acoustic prog noodlings but you've also got Big Phil laying four on the floor BOOM BAH BOOM BOOM BAH!

Riva

Hehe, Phil was one of the few Acca Dacca drummers that actually stood out.
