I needed an excuse not to drink and I figured I'd better tailor it for my audience

Among East Asians, I tend to say I have a genetically defective liver because it's something they're familiar with

But I thought I would try a different excuse this time, and told them I was a devout Buddhist. It figured it would be easy because I wouldn't have to shout "CAN'T DRINK I'M A BUDDHIST"; I could just say it in an almost normal voice, make anjali mudra and smile, and they could figure out my garbled message from context

This worked really well. I got nothing but respect for it

So I figure if any of them see me outside that party, I'd better look out for the only possibly non-Buddhist behavior I practice regularly, which is eating meat.

I researched on Wikipedia for awhile and found out that Theravada Buddhism tends towards laxity on meat-eating, at least compared with Mahayana. Drat, I wanted to be a pretend-Mahayana Buddhist so much.

But anyway out of curiosity I clicked on category 'Buddhist views', and then, again out of curiosity, on 'Buddhist economics'.

I found this book called Small Is Beautiful: Economics As If People Mattered.

Hm, I intend to do my graduate degree in economics and we have several copies of this book on campus

Man, i've really been slacking off with all the reading I have to do for my courses. I just can't find the motivation to do it all.

Intriguing turn of events.

My two and a half friends had left to Fairbanks about 5 months ago. I say half when I mean that I don't really try and hang out with her as often as the other two. She's a bit of a slob and a little lazy.

As of right now, she has a part time job delivering newspaper and is barely managing to scrounge up her third of the apartment rental agreement with all three (Herself, J, Ren).

So she's bailing on their agreement to be roommates to live with her uncle. J and Ren are still gonna stay roommates.

After hearing about this, I'm going to call up a company and see if they still have an internship program for security guards. If I do score a job with that, I'll be making roughly $4,700 a month. It's 12 hours a day, 2 weeks on/2 weeks off, that can be managable. After I call them, I'll ring up the flight school place and see when I can start attaining my private pilot's license preferably as soon as possible.

If I score a job as a security guard, then I can find a nice house in Fairbanks to rent and attend the flight school on my 2 weeks off.

If my college plans fail (they probably won't) and if the back-up plan to work as a mail carrier fails (it probably won't even come to that), by back-up-back-up plan is to be a night security guard because I sleep weird hours and I love the feeling of being the only person awake.
