j, sometimes you say things in this part of the forum that defy all understanding, this is one of them.
If I start talking about the practicality of catapults on castle walls that by no means translates into me thinking of taking a catapult and start hurling stones at my local bank. I'm merely talking about their practicality in general, not if I were to use them in modern warfare.

i'm not sure you understand the meaning of the word humane
eviscerating someone with a blade and allowing them to bleed to death while staring at their own guts isn't humane
most kills associated with a gunshot are fast and far less painful than an injury you would incur from a bladed weapon
Well, gunshots can be quite painful, but I would agree that it is quite a universal fear to have a blade of cold steel thrust into your body. I read a psych book on the matter - On Killing - that said the fear comes from it being a perversion of the sexual act (penetration) but I dunno about that. It just seems ****ing horrid.

Michael Mukasey just hit a new low.
Where there is evidence of criminal wrongdoing, we vigorously investigate it. And where there is enough evidence to charge someone with a crime, we vigorously prosecute. But not every wrong, or even every violation of the law, is a crime.
Straight from the Attorney General: Not every crime is a crime.

Michael Mukasey just hit a new low.
Straight from the Attorney General: Not every crime is a crime.
Not really. That's a pretty standard feature of criminal prosecution.
De minimis non curat lex-- the law does not bother with the smallest things.
Whether the offence in question falls within the definition of smallest things is a different thing altogether.
Akira
08-12-2008, 04:14 PM
He acknowledged that the hiring process was wrong. Given that as a basis, it's not hard to see that Mukasey is saying "it's only a crime if I say it's a crime."
Smokey D
08-12-2008, 04:18 PM
Give me some context.
Akira
08-12-2008, 04:26 PM
I want to stress that last point because there is no denying it: the system failed. The active wrong-doing detailed in the two joint reports was not systemic in that only a few people were directly implicated in it. But the failure was systemic in that the system - the institution - failed to check the behavior of those who did wrong. There was a failure of supervision by senior officials in the Department. And there was a failure on the part of some employees to cry foul when they were aware, or should have been aware, of problems.
So there he says it was "wrong." Now, if he had just said "Not everything wrong is a crime," that would have been one thing. But he didn't he went farther and said that something can break the law but not be a crime.
Smokey D
08-12-2008, 04:30 PM
It's true that not every breach of the law will be subject to criminal prosecution. Given the extraordinary amount of resources consumed at trial, crimes are only prosecuted when it is in the public interest to do so. There is a HUGE amount of discretion at every stage of the criminal justice system. I don't know why this should be any different.
But by context I meant tell me what has actually happened and what the alleged crimes is.
PerpetualBurn

And as much as annoying mistakes like that piss me off (they do, and I'm not even properly English), I have to admit that the point of language is to communicate ideas, and if dey sucsesfully comunicated n idea, it don't rilly matter how they spelld a word. Does it?

But people should have a strong grasp of the language because there are times when it is appropriate, if not necessary. Like legal documents and such.

Red Sox is no less confusing than the All Blacks, and the All Blacks are like the best team in anything ever.

Rugby and American football require the same sort of commitment and skill set, so in a country where all the focus is put on American football, it's not difficult to guess why rugby is eclipsed. Also, America has never done very well internationally and just like success breeds interest, failure breeds resentment and disinterest.
From what I understand, rugby is played in some parts of the American college system but pretty much no where else. It's pretty hard to get good at anything with such paltry support, and rugby played badly is pretty boring.

A bowl is just one game. As far as I know, the idea of a "bowl" comes from the Rose Bowl, a stadium which got it's name because, quite simply, it looks like a bowl. They had post-season games there, which set it apart. The famous college bowls are post-season games, but the term got generalized.
