Well, gunshots can be quite painful, but I would agree that it is quite a universal fear to have a blade of cold steel thrust into your body. As for why Americans don't care about it, I don't really know. It seems like a sport that should appeal to the American mindset.

Rugby and American football require the same sort of commitment and skill set, so in a country where all the focus is put on American football, it's not difficult to guess why rugby is eclipsed. Also, America has never done very well internationally and just like success breeds interest, failure breeds resentment and disinterest.

The Brit's aren't that good at fencing. Soviets used to dominate, but since they fell, there really hasn't been a fencing powerhouse.
