Did anyone get to see the shirt the king of Spain gave to Chavez yesterday? HILARIOUS.

Remember the 'Oh, just shut up' comment he gave Chavez a few months ago? Well, yesterday they were meeting, and proving that their relationship wasn't harmed, and the king jokingly gave Chavez a shirt with a picture of them, and with a caption of the king saying 'shut up'.

That would be true if it wasn't for hyperrealism

All of those super- hyper- magic- realisms were motivated by the introduction of the camera and at the same time explore other aspects of painting (Richard Estes was all about constructing elaborate perspective based on reflections and the like). I wouldn't go as far to say the camera obsoletes realism, but it does open considerable new areas of interest.

Rats in the underground, breed and infest, the disease it grows
Parasitic guised as folk
You bear the mask of the clown
Hide, in your fantasy world
Obsessed with foolish dreams
Whoring all though dear
You are the pests in the fields
Soon our kingdom shall come
And all your treachery undone
Mongrels, wretched filth be ashamed
Horde of **** and blood of apes
These sounds of hate and darkness
Meant for the pure, not for the meek
Hide, in your fantasy world
Obsessed with foolish dreams
Whoring all though dear
You are the pests in the fields
Soon our kingdom shall come
And all your treachery undone
Cower, you bear the mark of the false
Branded forevermore traitor
Beneath Black Metal
You shall crawl
Cower beneath the veil of darkness
Falsify, corrupt our blood
Relish every fleeting moment
For we are wolves (while) you are sheep
For we are wolves ... You are sheep[/color]

Actually the other day while I was waiting for a bus in the city I got to thinking. After taking in my surroundings, everything seemed so busy and established. All the buildings, electronics, vehicles, signs, people buzzing about, bikes, lights and so on. One day all of these things are going to be gone, and that gives me a weird feeling. One day theres going to be a field where my house is and no one will know I existed.

I know you can get a concentration here on Caribbean Literature, but it's under the Hispanic Studies department, so I don't know if that would include the non-spanish speaking islands. Well, in certain respects, this is very true, because language is (partly) subjective beyond basic bits of grammar and theoretical things that have no everyday applications. I didn't quite understand what you meant the first time.

That's why I dropped the idea of studying language formally. The beauty of maths and CS is that both can be studied almost autonomously. When you write proofs and they check out consistently, and the concepts all make sense, you can judge your strengths and weaknesses pretty accurately without help from anyone.

I don't know about the story of the maps. However, archaeological evidence is iffy to my knowledge. It is possible that the Chinese visited the New World, but I don't suppose they did much there. As much as I enjoy Chinese history, culture, etc., (etc., etc.) you always have to consider the source with Asian history texts because they tend to be very nationalistic. Like I was looking through the maths section at a local college library where I have a patron card, and they had a provocative title called Was Pythagoras Chinese?. The Chinese may have discovered similar results as he did independently but that implies that Pythagoras was Chinese no more than it implies Karl Gauss was Chinese—since he independently realized a result that had been discovered in the first few centuries after Christ in China, but in mathematically modern terms. Namely Gaussian elimination.

Well I like to "try before you buy" tbh. I checked out this one book from the library, Discrete Mathematics (Johnsonbaugh) and a word of warning to anyone who wants to pursue this field on his own: this book is pure ****. I found a major error almost as soon as I sat down on the porcelain seat of wisdom. Usually a cursory look at a few pages is good enough to tell whether a book is good and suitable for your purposes or not. However, some authors will sneak **** in under the radar and pack your mouth full of turds while you sleep.

I like to go on amazon.com, look for the title, and then read reviews. Had I done so for the Johnsonbaugh text, I would have found a 1 1/2 out of 5 star rating (IIRC) and a load of scathing reviews.

Ouch! Two classes I myself had trouble in at that hour! I loathed my early classes. I was so tired I might as well have not even gone.

I'm about an hour away from the uni, too :(.

Ew.

One of my professors had a 2 hour commute.

I'm reading a book right now on how the Chinese "discovered america" in 1421

Ew, that book is so crap.

Well, not all of it. Zheng He probably did go to the East coast of Africa and South Asia, but there's no way he crossed the Pacific or went to Australia.

Yeah I read a little more and he has 4 dates that are off and some of his citations are iffy.

Smokey D

I'm not sure the maps dates are too bad since he notes that they are reproductions. But to say they come from China is pretty unsubstantiated, and as you say they're probably in the wrong century.

Smokey D

You're convinced it's impossible to learn a language without interacting with native speakers on a daily basis. It's not impossible; it's just a lot harder.

Actually I said that. Your pay off rate is ridiculously low given the effort you have to put in.

Hey, mind telling me what a troll actually is?

A troll is someone who does **** on a forum purely to piss people off.

I thought you said it was your real name in an earlier thread.

Why would I give out real information online?

Nah, the map he shows in the book that he claims to be from the 1400's was indeed Chinese in make, but dated back to the late 1700's.

He makes me laugh, though, I really don't mind him. I've got him on MSN :p.

We've had some really bad 'trolls' in the Bass Forum, back when I was around. This forum really has nothing to complain about, if the worse it has is this.
