Awesome!
What kind of work does that entail?
Sociology: Learning about people and how they're affected by others and institutions of society.
Crimonology: Looking at criminals and crime and learning why it exists.

thedeadwalk!
10-24-2006, 11:36 PM
Anthropology deals mostly with culture and customs (what they are and their role) of people while sociology deals with institutions (religion, work, family, etc.) and what they mean, and how they affect people.
Anthropology's also interesting to me, but, sociology allows us to mess with people for the sake of finding out what's normal.

It's not so much that they look at different parts of society but what's behind them. Anthropology is real matter-of-fact, stating how societies are. Sociology goes beyond this explaining why they are.

I did a month of AS Sociology in September before I switched to Maths. In that time all my class did was write down some stuff about functionalism, marxism and feminism, as well as briefly discussing both class and media. It seemed like a bit of skive compared to my other subjects, but was fairly interesting. I wouldn't say it's a fake subject or useless though, I'd say that the study of society is fairly important.

IMO being philosophical is something you aquire in your personality, and you can't force/teach someone to think philosophically.

Yeah, there's not much outside of the academic for sociology. Some companies employ sociologists/anthropologists to better know their customers and get them buying stuff.
I don't see myself in either of those and will probably end up in some kind of physical labor (for exorcise as I'm highly sedentary) or doing a community service job of some kind.

Deep and insightful as that may have sounded in your head, it's pretty ignorant to think that.
Formal logic.
Types of fallacies and how to correct them or spot them for refutation.
Branches of philosophy and the actual philosophers.

Oh, that's easy. Producing an anarchist state is impossible, what with the two ideologies don't really go together.
But I know what you're saying. I'd say it's because the state (and other coercive forces) is constantly working against revolutionaries, because they seek to undermine and ultimately destroy the state and government. But hey, we came pretty damn close in Spain.

You're just as wrong as he if you don't know what jihad is and what it entails.
Jihad is Arabic for "struggle," more accurately a struggle for the sake of Islam. It doesn't necessarily involve violent warfare. A Muslim could decide that he would make a jihad of memorizing the Qur'an; he could decide to split open my belly with an AK-47. Not all jihadists are violent terrorists.

This kind of "practical politics" should totally be introduced
Along with:
Wars should be settled fairly and with minimal loss of life as follows: pistols at dawn. The GDPs of the countries are compared, and seconds should be distributed according to the ratios, so that if the UK wanted to invade iraq the whole cabinet would have to risk their necks.
Then, they duel from 20 paces until one government is completely wiped out; they lose.

I did biology, chemistry, maths, and physics at A-level (dropped physics after AS).
Worst decision I ever made.

lol that's what I thought when I got my GCSE results, I got none of my predicted ones (cept for Maths). anyway do you know what you plan on doing with these subjects? I imagine Law would be a pretty good choice with the ones you've picked.
I don't really know what I want to do past A-level, apart from something interesting... I'm just going with stuff I like, rather than trying to carve out some career path for myself.
And if I screw up, I could always become a professional drug addict!
Seems like an interesting life...

When I got suspended for what I did during the college trip, my dad responded by saying, "Well, it's good to know that if you fail at everything else, you can be a mule as a fall-back career."
This was in response to how I single-handedly snuck in 200 cans of beer into our school's hotel.

Two Macy's shopping bags and my suitcase. I preemptively brought a bigass suitcase that was only 1/4 full with clothing. The rest was filled with beer that I later bought with a fake ID.

Gotta hand it to you there.
To be fair, on the school trip to Paris, I could've brought a seriously large amount of any recreational drug I wanted with me... our bags were not scanned or checked at any point during the crossing.

I stashed 140 and my friend stashed 60. The 60 that my friend carried I later picked up after I emptied my shopping bags in my room.

Ha, I was thinking of taking subjects like English and Philosophy (more creative ones I guess) now I'm doing biology, chemistry, maths and physics. I imagine they're all pretty interesting subjects, especially philosophy.
listed in order from less awesome to more aweosme but still good subjects

Well, you have to dins these things out for yourself.
I did maths, Furhter maths, Chemistry, electronics physics last year, an dropped chemistry at AS. I really like my subjects, if i'd just taken those 4 last year i wouldn't've dropped one.

:) It's really not that impressive, the teachers and councelors made no effort to search people or even question my hilariously suspicious suitcase and the clanking in my shopping bags. But 200 smuggled cans is nothing to sneeze at either.

Yep, road trips are usually like that (I assume you got there by an automobile of sorts).

Iraq is unwinnable. The only "victory" we can get out of it is a self sufficiant Iraqi governemnt, and then a withdrawl of our forces, but only when the ladder is acheived.
Aha, so we were right all along.:p
What do you mean by "the ladder"?

Who needs any beer? I don't really like drinking vast quantities of it. I tend to prefer clear spirits.

Don't like the darkies, hm? Me, I'm indescriminate.
Beer really is a puzzle to me, though. I guess it's an alcoholic equivalent to coffee. Even then, liquor still works better.
As long as you enjoy it though, drink up!

Dark spirits like whiskey tend to taste rather bad to me unless they're premium (Scotch, for example) which I can't afford. Beer tastes okay (if it's decent beer) but I wouldn't want to drink a lot of it at at once.
drink up!
I concur!

I'd say that's a misquote, but it sounds like something I'd say anyway.
I'm a beer enthusiast. If I had the holy grail I'd only drink Duvel and Leffe out of it.

My 6th form doesn't offer Further Maths :(
I would've done it instead of biology if they did probably (if they let me that is, my predicted GCSE for Maths was B and I got B, but my teacher said I should've been a strong A student so I screwed up somewhere and may not've been able to do further maths).
I might see if I can do it at AS next year though (maybe at a different school, my 6th form has 'links' to other colleges), seeing as I'm thinking of dropping biology at the end of this year (good subject but I find the others more interesting).

To be honest, I don't think I would've enjoyed any subject at A-level, though I'm sure I'd have found English much easier than the ones I took. At the time I was considering becoming a vet, so I needed sciences. I changed my mind later on.
The whole A-level system just didn't suit me. Everyone talks about how you have to adapt to the University system, how no one pressures you to work, you have to find the reading for yourself etc. but it just suits me perfectly.

And on the subject of beer, I drink vast quantities of the stuff. I generally prefer bitter to lager though.
Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWuf7V3YPgQ Me necking a pint. Not one of my best. I've had it down to 3.5 in the past. There's some obscene videos on youtube of guys doing it in 2.2 seconds and stuff.
You can even see the penny that someone dropped in my glass.

every gcse is a doddle. there so easy compared with uni. in most subjects they just lie to you anyway, or dumb it down ridiculously. A level is a bit better.

Well I have to admit it's an odd mix, but according to the Oxbridge websites they expect people to take 4/5 AS levels and 3/4 A2s and most offers at these schools are set at AAA, so I don't think that taking only 4 subjects will be a huge disadvantage (although 5 AS/4A2s would probably be preferred). You still have several options with those courses though, I know people with far worse combinations.
