yeah i have no idea what that was about but it looks interesting. pineapple express looks good simply because i love the MIA song they put in the trailer lol
Well the Watchmen is based on a DC graphic novel from the mid 80's. It is still the only graphic novel to ever win a Hugo Award and be on the list of Time Magazine's list of "the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present."
In short: It is badass.

Watchmen is incredible. I'm reading it at the moment (nothing to do with film, had been meaning to for ages)
it is however unfilmable. don't think i even want to watch it, especially after what they did to V for Vendetta.
I'm not surprised you like it actually siva.

The screenshots I have seen for it look pretty impressive, tbh. I thought the same thing about it at first too, but I must say, they could pull it off.

I agree. Rorschach is a total badass.
Superman is a chump compared to others. I always preferred Batman in the DC world to him anyhow. Although there were a couple of good Superman books.

No, to a group that doesn't give any bit of a damn about perserving the neutrality of the Red Cross or international law, that kind of a move wouldn't be inherently be stupid, as it might further their goals. You can't "deduce" that it was a stupid move for someone just because your goals or ideals don't neccessarily align with someone else's. Thus, saying it was stupid is a subjective opinion.
Even if most people think it is a stupid thing to do because they do care about perserving said neutrality and whatnot, argumentum ad populum is a logical fallacy.

But then that would be stupid.

You could more simplistically phrase this as:
If their motivations were stupid, then it wouldn't be stupid to be stupid.
Retard.
Plus this entirely undermines your original idea that this wasn't a stupid way to save the hostages. Since the Red Cross is obviously of importance to them.

Well when your argument is based on a personal opinion, no matter how popular or widespread it may be, it is kinda pointless to try and "refute it."
Your argument pretty much amounts to "I think it is stupid, so it is stupid" which is certainly not objective in any way.
It's your opinion that it's my opinion.

Siva, how is it not in the Colombian government's interest to preserve the neutrality of the Red Cross?
My biggest issue with this is that it worked once. It will never work again, because the FARC won't fall for it again. So no more good will come out of it for the Colombian government, but plenty of more hard will come to Red Cross workers who may very well have trouble operating in Colombia.

Siva, how is it not in the Colombian government's interest to preserve the neutrality of the Red Cross?
Well if you look back you'll see that wasn't what the issue evolved into.
I explicitly stated that I didn't neccessarily support said method of going about getting the prisoners (because I happen to believe in some sort of international code of conduct of nations), rather that it was a clever way of going about it.
The issue evolved into whether or not it was inherently dumb for someone to do so. I said it is not, depending on one's aims and goals.

Well at least against the FARC anyway. That is, unless they are foolish enough to fall for it a second time.

No, actually the inherently stupid comment came much later. You started off saying this was a smart thing to do. Which I've forced you to concede on the basis that violating the neutrality of the Red Cross is a VERY stupid thing for Colombia to do given their goals, but you've been acting like a moron.

In my town, part of the standard fees a student pays to register for school is a $45 nurses fee.
Now, my old neighbors decided that they aren't down with that. With the help of the ACLU, they sued the school on the grounds that it is unconstitutional. And, because the world sucks, they won. Now it's an "optional donation." If not enough people donate, one of the nurses will lose her job. Not to mention what the lawsuit probably cost the school.
Now to make matters worse, the people who started the suit, while "fundamentalist" is maybe too strong a word, are definitely Jesus freaks. They home-schooled their kids for years because our schools are, presumably, not God-fearing enough. If it was up to them, every life science class in the school would be replaced with Bible study. That would be good. But asking people to pay $45 a kid to pay nurses in a town where everyone can afford it without blinking an eye is unconstitutional.
Moral of the story: Jesus freaks suck, and the ACLU, for all the good cases it takes, will also take any garbage case as well.

even as i was typing this, i heard a clip. mccain is using the slight diminish in violence as a platform to somehow show victory in iraq as a direct result of the troop surge that obama opposed.

Um...
So...?
The point was that he believes in reaching out. The Bush administration's view has been "America doesn't care what the rest of the world thinks," and that is bad. The idea is that Obama is willing to reach out and work with the world community as a whole, something the current administration refuses to do.
And besides, you do realize that Bush has repeatedly used the phrase "citizen of the world" too, right?
Again, Obama is a citizen of the world. Only you and your crazy Neocon pals could possibly twist that into being somehow un-American or inappropriate.
Next you're going to tell me you're one of the people who thinks that it was wrong for Obama to print fliers for the speech in German.

McCain has a long history of fostering diplomacy and multilateral agreements. Much more than Obama. There's no cowboy diplomacy in McCain's mindset.

You're doing just what you did last night - changing the subject. First Obama's bad because he said he's a citizen of the world and that means he must be some traitor who would act for the good of Europe, then the problem is that he's not multilateral enough. Make up your mind!
Oh yeah:
JOHN MCCAIN SUPPORTED UNILATERALLY INVADING IRAQ, A COUNTRY WHICH POSED ABSOLUTELY NO THREAT TO AMERICA!
How in the world does that support your idea that he doesn't believe in cowboy diplomacy and is the responsible one?
Obama said he would attack in Pakistan to weaken Al-Qaeda. John McCain actually supported unilateral regime change in Iraq. How can you argue that the later action is more justified?

Remember Vietnam? We pulverized the NVA/VC for years. Tet? Of the 20,000 gooks who participated, we killed HALF OF THEM, not to mention recovered every single over run position in less than a month. We won Tet based on every traditional benchmark there was. Even the NVA general in charge (I forget his name) wrote that he considered it a defeat.
However, in the age of modern media, benchmarks mean nothing. Opinion means everything. And that saddens me.
Now, not to say I support us being in Iraq. We shouldn't be there. We had no justification for going in. But we are there and now that we are I would rather see us finish the job correctly than pull a Vietnaminization... Iraqization? say we won, pack up, and go home to let them crumble apart.
But anyways, as I was saying, opinion is everything. The American people see the progress me make sure, but they don't see is, because it is overshadowed by the body-bags coming home. Since Vietnam, the cost of war has been more apparent then ever before to the public, and in situations that once would have been considered resounding victories, are now political defeats (Mogadishu comes to mind).
So no, we aren't winning, because the most important front in modern warfare is the home front.
Akira

I'm not using it in a racist context (AVN forces commonly referred to NVA/VC as gooks). Admittedly yes, it is a derogatory word, but that is a commonality in any war, giving nicknames of dubious nature to an enemy to distance their humanity from ones own. I see nothing wrong with using words such as gook, japs or kraut when applied in an historical context. As such they are words used to refer to and encapsulate specifically the enemy forces at that time. (Yes, I know that all those terms have prior historical backgrounds, but we aren't talking about the Chinese Exclusion Act here... we are talking about the Vietnam War).
If it makes you feel better though, I will call them Charlie for now.

I agree on both counts. It certainly is racist now, and many adversarial nicknames grow out of racial/ethnic/national hatred merely from their circumstances (although they usually are accompanied by more friendly counterparts - Charlie or Jerry). But the context is, as you said, that they were people we were shooting at. It is war, and they are the enemy, and historically these terms are applied to the enemy, and even though they often have a racial/ethnic underpinning, I see little wrong in their use if kept in a well understood historical context.

He says sorry, but can't figure out what they are saying, and for some reason thinks they are speaking French, so waves us over and tells my other friend, who speaks fluent french, "I think they are French!" This turns out to not be true, and they are like, "nein, Deutsche". The first friend, takes a long pause... then says "ah... Deutsche... Blaße mir einen!" )only phrase he knows) and walks away. Luckily they take it well and the wife actually bursts out laughing, and then they walk away too.

"jap" is not a racist term. "Jap" is no more offensive than "Brit".
It carries the same contextual connotations as other terms used similarly.

Not really. It connotes a 'Me so sorree'
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/33/Tokio_Kid_Say.png
sort of thing.
Maybe in England it's less bad.
You don't think of people you're shooting as human. You have to demonise or dehumanise them and that is the purpose of hate speech in battlezones. Just like a GI calling an Iraqi a 'towel head' whatever is racist, gook is racist both now and hten.
Historically accurate, yes but racist.

The false friends there remind me of a great little episode that happened a little while ago.
Me and my two friends are walking back from a movie. They are piss drunk. One lags behind to light a cigarette and almost bumps into a foreign couple, man and wife... maybe 60 or so.
If your friends were sober then it might have been a bit offensive.

How do you figure? No word is really racist on it's own, context and intent define it. The term "Brit" is generally used as a basic term for the British, while "Jap" is generally used in a racist context.

My dad majored in theater/communications (yeah chip off the old block huh) and this one time they had a director from France come in to direct a play
They were having a hard time rehearsing a scene, so at one point she up and says "Foak youss!" in frustration
Dead silence
"Foak youss! ... You need to foak youss (focus)."

Again, I certainly see your point, I just am of the opinion that the nature of war precludes such usage being categorized as 'hate speech,' as the reason of usage is more abstract then mere racial animosity, even if the expression itself is rooted in racial origins.

That's weird. The French version of English wouldn't make a fokyus sound. More like fockooze or foc-us.

No it smells like French pastries, bread and French cheese.
Which is to say awesome.

I disagree. Comparing terms like Kraut and Jerry to gook, and dune ****, it's pretty clear some terms are more racist than others.

Idk, for some reason I have no desire to go to Paris. I'm going on a backpacking trek through Europe next year with some freinds and I think we're going through Paris at one point.

It's full of graffiti and homeless people and there is, among other marvels of civil engineering, an intersection which is made to resemble a star radiating many beams of light—very practical

Well we're going to do it for a month and a half, and we have ridiculous amounts of money set aside for it (We've been saving since high school) in a big pool we are all going to draw out of if needed, so we can pretty much hit up any city we want, so hell, I might as well go to ol' par-ee. I'm looking forward to going to Luxembourg and blowing tons of money.

So I've only been to like 2 big European capitals but comparing London and Paris, London just feels dark and dingy and crowded. Everything in Paris works, and it's much more beautiful. Better nightlife, or so I understand but I was too young to appreciate that last time I was there.
The dark and dingy thing might have something to do with it being winter and London being an hour behind France despite being on teh same latitude. I think
