This is what makes Rachel Papo sexist:
"During the next two years, immersed in a regimented and masculine environment, she will be transformed from a girl to a woman, within the framework of an army that is engaged in daily war and conflict"

She said that a masculine environment turns girls into women. Now if that was said to me without the context, I'd think she meant compulsory service in a bordello house or something like that. The army is extremely chauvinist, I nevr said it isn't. In fact I know a few women in Israel who refused to conscript on the basis that the army is sexist.
Iskandar
07-12-2008, 06:12 PM

That's what she said, read the quote carefully. And it's not a mistake in vocab, it represents something much bigger. There is a certain patriarchal male-chauvinist culture in every army that doesn't exist in civilian life, and kids get dumped into it, and when they emerge they're considered adults (by Israeli society). This turns military service into a rite of passage, which I think is very unhealthy.

Hey, I've got this question on my summer homework about the DNCC for US Government: What is "greening" and what role does it play in the Democratic Party? All the information I can find says "greening" is making the convention more ecologically friendly, is that it? Because I can't really imagine why she would ask us that, especially when it's followed up by "Do you think 'greening' should play the role it does in the Party?"

Yeah I don't really see where I have ever disputed that.
There are also certain weapons that military troops aren't supposed to use against enemy combatants, but that doesn't make actually using them against them any less efficient. It might make it "wrong" by international standards, but saying something is effective and efficient is completely different than saying it something is morally or lawfully "right" or "wrong."

"Shoah" has been used as the Hebrew word for the Holocaust since the Holocaust began, and that's what it's used for. It's not like a Jew would refer to a plane crash as a "shoah." You wouldn't throw this word around, it's too powerful.
Now, don't get me wrong. I do not believe that Israel wants to commit genocide against the Palestinian people. I repeat, I am not accusing Israel of wanting to pursue a holocaust against the Palestinians. Getting that out of the way, the term implies extremely harsh action. Considering that Steve's entire defense of Israel is based on the idea that they are as careful as possible to do as little damage to civilians as possible, this word usage is relevant.
And just to make it clear: I repeat, I am not accusing Israel of wanting to pursue a holocaust against the Palestinians.

Yes, it does, but as long as we're doing this whole state thing, we might as well do it properly and protect the people who need our protection, instead of criminalising them. You do realise that with current drug policies in the west, pretty much every person is either a criminal or knows someone who is, but isn't telling the police. Laws should be defined by their society, not society defined by its laws. If we're so intent on taking drugs, we should do it out in the open, where it's safe and where we can help each other deal with redundant sh!t.
Also, how in the hell are we "gonna organize under one united class" when we can't even organize under one united country?
Of course we can't organise as a united country, a country is nothing more than a statist entity with defined territorial and moral borders, and with a violent military and police force to guard those borders, respectively. In this situation you're bound to exclude a lot of people. If you have a law that says you can't smoke a spliff, you immediately exclude all those people who want to do that. If you make laws against squatting, you exclude poor people, etc etc etc.
Right now humanity stands divided along many lines, like race, financial circumstance, gender, disability, sexuality, nationality, culture, age, industry, etc. All these divisions serve to do is keep those who exploit them in power. Every bid for personal power always, always, relies on the tactic of divide and conquer. If we organise across these false divisions then we'll have a united class, with no rulers and no exploited.
Anarchy is a nice pipe dream, it really is. Just like Marxism is to a degree. I just don't see it as feasible without a massive revolution in human psychology.
What do you think a revolution means? It means changing the way we act and behave, which then changes the way we think and feel. If a community that was apathetic to itself (no community solidarity, is what I mean) comes under attack from land-developers, and its members forced to fight together to defend their existence as a community, then they will start thinking about each other differently and acting differently, setting up projects to help each other out, organising with other communities who hold similar interests, etc. And that's how we organise as a class.

I'm all for legalizing drugs, fyi. I just thought it was kinda contradictory to your whole anarchist views.
In an anarchist society, what do you think would prevent these same drug monopolies from forming, exactly?
Of course we can't organise as a united country, a country is nothing more than a statist entity with defined territorial and moral borders, and with a violent military and police force to guard those borders, respectively. In this situation you're bound to exclude a lot of people. If you have a law that says you can't smoke a spliff, you immediately exclude all those people who want to do that. If you make laws against squatting, you exclude poor people, etc etc etc.
No what I am saying is we can't currently even unite under one class in a single country, let alone some global class revolution. Even members of the same class are divided politically and even socially. The rural middle class faces different realities than the urban middle class and so on and so forth.
The whole idea of anarchism is kind of defeated by the fact that not everyone agrees with it. Unless you just want to kill everyone who isn't anarchist, but that would be kinda silly, wouldn't it?
Right now humanity stands divided along many lines, like race, financial circumstance, gender, disability, sexuality, nationality, culture, age, industry, etc. All these divisions serve to do is keep those who exploit them in power. Every bid for personal power always, always, relies on the tactic of divide and conquer. If we organise across these false divisions then we'll have a united class, with no rulers and no exploited.
These divisions aren't only perpetrated by those in power, they are also perpetrated within the psychology of each one of us. This is why I think your revolution would fail in our world.
I know full well what a revolution entails. I am saying your revolution would fail because the human beings as a whole are not enlightened enough.
I would say you have it kind of backwards though. We first must change the way we think and see things, before we can change the way we act and behave, because action (the outer) is merely a projection of thought (the inner).
"Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think. Suffering follows an evil thought as the wheels of a cart follow the oxen that draws it. Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think. Joy follows a pure thought like a shadow that never leaves."- The Buddha
Humanity has not learned this yet.
I think Tenzin Gyatso, the current Dalai Lama, summed up my views on why Marxism and things like it tend to fail the best:
"I think the major flaw of the Marxist regimes is that they have placed too much emphasis on the need to destroy the ruling class, on class struggle, and this causes them to encourage hatred and to neglect compassion. Although their initial aim might have been to serve the cause of the majority, when they try to implement it all their energy is deflected into destructive activities. Once the revolution is over and the ruling class is destroyed, there is not much left to offer the people; at this point the entire country is impoverished and unfortunately it is almost as if the initial aim were to become poor. I think that this is due to the lack of human solidarity and compassion. The principal disadvantage of such a regime is the insistence placed on hatred to the detriment of compassion."

The human race is progressing at an incredible rate, and finding answers to the many questions that have burdened us for so long. And we are progressing so quickly now, but it seems in so many ways man resists his destiny and misses his rightful inheritance. Those of us who are last who witness the old paradigms dissolve and see that we stand on the threshold of a greater change, that we approaching the final question at an exponential rate. For when we have answers to all our questions but the last, do we not see that we must end our ethical obligations to idols? Progress is not going back. We see the old paradigms are of no value. What has the virtue of those gods gained us? For it is the strong who will shed themselves of these virtues which are not virtues at all, and to value what is more valuable and dishonor the obligations that keep him from progress. We move forward into a new millennium, in which we are asking ourselves if we will survive as a race in the next hundred years. As our resources wear out, as the oil supplies are consumed, we see that the modern industrial age is heading into a post industrial stone age. And so you who stand on this final frontier must ask that final question. Will we continue in the ways of the traditions of the past which are the source of our burdens, or will we create for ourselves a new world in which the strong have put aside the burdens of the past and risen to the challenge of creating for himself something beautiful?

At work, wishing I was at the bar.
Also wishing I had horticultural projects like yourself....that is, if I still was an avid smoker.
That and reading some up on some top secret technology, which is pretty sweet.

i wouldn't really call myself an avid smoker anymore
i bought a bag last week for the first time in months, ran out by sunday and now i have to wait until next week to partake in anything i've grown
however, i love growing <3

it's literally the best movie i've ever seen. i can't think of a single thing wrong with it, and i hate most comic book movies.

I usually enjoy comic book movies, even though they frequently screw with story lines from the comics....
I am really excited to see the new Batman.
I also can't wait for the Watchmen movie. That will be so awesome....
