they work you *so hard*, for like ten weeks at a time, then you get long holidays. So, you have hardly any time to enjoy yourself at uni, sit around for a fortnight at home waiting for your friends to break up, spend a couple of weeks with them and then repeat.
Oxbridge is for people who *love* their subjects.

I think to get to and perform well at Oxford or Cambridge you have to be dedicated to your work.
But I don't think work is by any means the only reason to choose a university.
Smokey D
12-16-2007, 09:53 PM
Like connections and job opportunities, not to mention the prestige of having attended an Oxbridge university. However, to get the most of going to a prestige school, you usually have to go post-grad, by which time you should be ready to focus on your work and have done all the partying/fun uni **** already at your undergrad school.
Also, am I correct in thinking that Oxford is no longer rated either #1 or #2 according to the THES?

Feel free to come here at any time. It isn't huge, but quite comfy anyways.
i have some new neighbors from Sweden, from what they have said, I would only want to visit. They say they never want to go back after living here and enjoying the low taxes we pay compared to theirs, but some things did sound good, parents get an entire year or more off work, mother & father, where here, you're good to get the first 6 weeks before your company can legally let you go. They said Sweden was nice, but taxes & income are horrid.
It starts to gets scary below the Mason Dixon line.

Cockney is pretty different from the other three you mentioned, and I can always spot Brummie by the way it makes me want to rip out their voice box, but the other two are always more problematic for me, and take more time and guesswork.
I learned to spot Cornish though, after squatting with a bunch of Cornish nationalists. Hilarious stuff. Cornwall has the best flag out of all the united kingdoms. I simply can't wait for the Dissolution of the United Kingdom, it'll be awesome. Islamic Republic of South Yorkshire, know what I mean?

why do so many bills that seem to target one subject always come with pork that will almost guarantee its failure? It seems they love to include junk so the other side appears unwilling to support progressive bills that will help the US.
But a bill that gives more tax breaks to oil & coal and tightens up tax breaks on wind and solar isnt a good one anyway. :/

What so bad bout taking care of our environment, global warming or not?
I am ALL for helping our environment, I hate how we treat the same planet that gives us life, but because it being politicized so much, its gotten away from actually acheiving anything for the environment and has turned into a debate to help get votes.
take a look at the bill, it gives fossel fuel bigger tax breaks than solar power or wind, which dont pollute at all. What kind of eco friendly results does this acheive? Kyoto protocols, which the UN and other supporters rally behind, do little and only address a few countries and leave out the biggest polluters.
It just seems like people are mindless sheep and have completely fallen for good speeches and totally ignored how the same people actually vote. ALL that is being done is setting up infastructure for yet another big business to do much of the same, yet, when someone voices opposition, the polarity our leaders have created negates good, honest questions and concerns.
If you dont really see whats going on with climate debate, then I guess there isnt much I can do to help.

If I'm drinking to enjoy the drink, I usually go for cider; Stowford, Kopparberg, bulmers/magners, Brothers, strongbow when there's nothing better. If I'm drinking to get drunk and I'm buying it to drink at home, i usually go for gin and tonic, and in clubs, whatever's cheap. It's £1.50 a pint in my hall bar so it's strongbow or snakebite depending on how fast I want to drink it, and if i'm in a club I can't afford to do anything except mix as much as possible as fast as possible, otherwise I spend the evening stood around watching people have fun while I think about how much I hate the music. I once nearly fell asleep in a nightclub. (as in, where your head keeps tipping forwards and you jerk back up). Since then I've started having to take like, 4 or so pro plus halfway through the night just to keep going...

I think it's around three quid in our SU, so when you can get a pint for under two, I'm just not going to drink it.
Dr Hooch
12-20-2007, 05:34 PM
Yeah. Whereas, in places where a pint is £2.50 anyway, it doesn't tend to be more than £3 still. So that's when I'm more likely to have it.
Another one i like but can't afford: Savannah Dry.

Well, it was about the co-location of our colleges but it spread further than that. Originally, anyone found taking part in a protest for it would face suspension/expulsion and the teachers have been told that basically they'll get fired if they speak out against co-location. I'd explain why it's bad but you're probably not interested :p

We were pretty pleased with the result really considering the time and stuff. Some teachers also secretly helped with mass photocopying as well. It was like a big secret organisation. If you believe that a young child can comprehend the truth and reason it out in their head in the same manner that an adult does, you're making a sad mistake.

How will telling your children that Santa is not real benefit them? What long-term, real, serious improvement would it make? They can figure it out when they're old enough to understand it.
EDIT: Also, it's not like they're ever going to resent you for not telling them when they were just old enough to speak that Santa is garbage. If you fear some kind of misrepresentation of your character that's ridiculous.

I'd like to hear said reason so I don't think you just did it because protests are the in thing.
Okey dokey:
-It's moving from the town centre to join with a college based in a residential area out of town (there are more points to this I'll get in later)
-The town centre will lose loads of business and some will have to shut down
-There is no other example of co-location working with a college of our reputation
-We have lurvly buildings and the area we are in is great for spreading outside the college into social areas like the quarry (a big park)
-The traffic on London Road (where it's going) is awful and dangerous as it is, without an extra 1500 students going there.
-There isn't enough parking spaces for all of the staff, let alone any students.
-Enough social space for 300 students, when there will be over 3000 students every day.
-Trying to get there will be really hard. I only live 20 minutes out of town and I'd have to get up about 5:30 to spend £4-£5 making two separate bus journeys into town then the campus. So anyone even further out won't even have the choice of going to SSFC because they can't get there.
-Choice. People chose to go to Sixth Form not just for the courses but the place. It's a great location to be at. Take away that choice and what are you left with. One goddamn campus in an awful location.
-The ONLY reason they've given funding for this is because they haven't been presented with another option. They'd be happy to give the college money to extend the campus where it is.
-Our college (whic gets seriously good results and in general is a brilliant institution) will actually result in getting less space than before. The planned drama and music department (whic at the moment consists of two classrooms, one studio and two practice rooms with other space) was going to be one classroom.
-We will lose teachers. Up to 30% from both SSFC and SCAT. This alone is a good enough reason not to move.
-3000-7000 (the added 4000 are those that could be part time, there will be 3000 full time students) people in a college with no where to go during frees/lunch in a residential area is not good.
-The extra transport needed to get to the new site with raise CO2 emissions, which is something the world needs to cut down on. Especially with a project that is not necessary.
There are definitely more points. But I'm quite tired/sobering up so those are the ones off the top of my head.
I would have no problem with it if it was logical to co-locate. We will lose teachers, the journey is dangerous, the location is stupid and illogical and our college will not be as good as it is where it is now.
Don't worry, I've done my research. 'Tis something I feel quite strongly about.

Hell they probably did, but they were there to support and made up the numbers, which is what we were worried about. 97% students don't want co-location so they were there because of that, even if initially they think it's cool. But tbh, the group of us that organised it are really against it and we're willing to do as much as we can to stop it, so if the supports there, I'll damn well use it.
The first one was pretty unpopular and we were scared it was going to happen with this one too since our Principal threatened us with suspension/expulsion. Loads of people couldn't be bothered either. It was last period on the Friday we broke up, so people had the option of going home if they wanted to. But they made the choice to stay and be listened to for once because our college has done nothing but ignore us. So I guess that counts for something.

Idk, it seems like people who protest let their emotions get the better of their objective thought.

If there was no passion behind things, then people wouldn't fight to change it. And if I'm being honest, the protest was a publicity stunt with the primary goal to get media attention. (Coincidentally and luckily) it's come at a time when our MP has been in the paper speaking out against it, and when our principal is getting slated for trying to ban teachers from attending a public meeting for it the night before the march. It's what we needed if we want people to object to it before the planning permission goes ahead. If no one's passionate about it thenno one will try and stop it.
BUT
I do semi-agree with you. It's in the last stage of the go-ahead, so the focus for attack needs to get rid of the emotion and put in objections to the planning permission and general location rather than the other stuff.
So yeah, you're right. But the idea of the march was to get a bit of passion enough for people to write objection letters, get it in the media and have another strike at our principal.

I partook in a protest once because it was fun
well, and because I believed it was a worthwhile protest
Which it was, because it actually got something done, which I doubt many protesters can boast about

Mhm. I wasn't holding out much hope before... I mean they've not listened to us before so why now? But we were protesting for the teachers and generally for the fact that college management have tried to shut us all up with threats. But the amount of support we got (which is much more than we expected tbh) leads me to believe we can stop it as long as it doesn't end with the protest.
What protest did you partake in?

there is difference between passion and letting emotion cloud your ideas. I think there are betters ways to communicate an idea and fight for change.

I do understand why people protest, and it is just and needed in some cases. It was more or less a general statement.

Yes I totally agree with you and it would never work as a stand-alone fight. Which is why now we're going to press on with (hopefully) more meetings (in which we are also hoping the few that are pro-colocation will not refuse to attend) and encouraging people to write objection letters. Our MP is taking the matter to the education secretary as well. It really was just to get it in the papers and get the students fired up to write in letters.
EDIT: And it was a peaceful protest :p not a "LET'S STORM THE COLLEGE AND RIOT LIKE CRAZY ****ERS"

what was the protest for
the guy running our school was really into art.. Which was cool most of the time, because it made the environment a little more interesting
but then one day, there was this artist seance thing where this middle aged woman came to our school and started chanting and dancing while pouring paint and jam and what else she could find in her kitchen over herself and rolling around naked on a carpet
and after that, the walls were plastered with these foul photos from this seance.. A naked middleaged woman covered in jam.. And in the middle of it all hang the carpet she did this one.. Reeking of something not so nice
so you couldn't go to the cafeteria without losing your appetite.
so after getting 70 % of the students to sign a petition to get them removed, without anything being done about it, 10 of us snuck up to the school at night, (we had gotten some keys from a teacher who was in on it) and we taped plastic bags over all the images
So now all art for the school has to be approved by a council of students

I've typed out about 4 different responses so far... but I'm not really sure how to reply to that.
Well done I guess :)

I always thought that middle-aged snatch went well with assorted cafeteria cuisine.
