I just saw an advert for Gilette Razors the pitch of which (hehe) was to show your devotion to your country in the world cup. Basically, it had a montage of fans of varying nationalities with their respective flags (and their shaped) shaved and dyed into their hair. In almost every clip, the fans were ecstatic, as if their team had just scored, but in the last one, it was two Japanese kids with their flag on the back of their head, and they looked crestfallen. It was quite funny.

anybody who can play point guard or shooting guard in the nba would've been physically perfectly capable of playing professional soccer, had there been any reason for them to take that direction in thier lives.

It's pretty bloody stupid to think that people are equally good at all sports. People suit some sports better than others.

nope sorry, assuming that people won't try to maximize their financial rewards is stupider.

It's pretty bloody stupid to miss the point here, too. England will produce more professional footballers than it will basketballers because the level of training, facilities, and competition is greater. You aren't going to become a top-class basketballer, even if you have the potential, if you never play basketball past a recreational level, which most people don't.

american colleges are always trying to recruit overseas players, and there's quite a few well funded places that recruit teenagers in the european mainland

you would have to be pretty 'bloody stupid' to have the ability to play in the nba and then not do it.

I used to think I don't like team sports, but I've started playing football again and I've realised that it's not the co-operative team aspect I didn't like, it's the competitiveness that tends to come with sports in high school, but now, playing with friends, it's just about having fun and I've really started to enjoy working as a team.

PerpetualBurn
06-14-2006, 07:37 PM
I hated playing football in P.E. because I pretty much hated a lot of the people playing it. Then 2-3 years ago me and a few mates put together a 5-a-side team in a local league and it was great. There was the odd tosser in the league, but most of the time it was a good mix of ages (team ages from 16 to 40's) and most of the lads up there were quality.

The team collapsed a month or so back for various reasons. But the point being, being on a team for sport can be awesome. It might be rather base male instinct, but you do become closer with mates if you're on a team regularly like that.

coheneran
06-14-2006, 07:40 PM
Yeah, the egotistical competitiveness is, I think, pretty artificial, especially in high schools, where all the guys live to impress the chicks. Our lot, the radicals in Russell Square, we almost always play mixed sexes, sometimes even with a dress on!:amaze:

PerpetualBurn

That's just plain stupid.

If you're caught drinking underage then you can maybe get a light fine (since drunk and disorderly gets you fined £80) but I know of no one who that's ever happened to. And underage drinking in pubs was a regular thing for me. It was just whether or not they felt tight that evening.

Though recently a small pub about 2 minute walk from my house lost its license for serving underage people, but they'd been let off twice before and they'd become well-known for it. It got extremely blatant before they were punished.

I just can't see that you should have to be 21 to drink in a pub. It's just not that big a deal.
